Controversial movie/TV opinions

I often like to look back on Farley with fondness, but I can never fight the nagging feeling that if he were still with us he'd be co-starring in one awful Adam Sandler vehicle after another and be universally loathed.

Might as well stay controversial and throw out the idea that Under Siege might actually be better than Con Air as well. I don't mean to pile on Con Air but Casey fucking Ryback, come on! I can't get over how awesome Busey and Jones are in their roles. It's so entertaining.

The Last Boy Scout is the best action movie of the 90's though.

Hard Boiled says hi. If its just american movies, Die hard with a vengance is in the running too. . .

I've always said If he didn't die young he would be looked at like we look at Pauly Shore.

I said this in the DVDVR Movie Club (pre-board crash version) and it was generally agreed with so not sure how "controversial" it'll end up being but:

Joe Hallenbeck > John McClane

In fact, I think Willis agrees with that sentiment because if you look over the Die Hard series, McClane more or less becomes Hallenbeck. In the first two Die Hards, McClane is a happily married well-respected - albeit spectacular unlucky - cop. Then the third one rolls around and all of a sudden he's a drunk (like Hallenbeck) who gets kicked off his job (like Hallenbeck) while undergoing a bitter divorce (like Hallenbeck). Taking it a step farther, it's not hard to picture his daughter in the fourth one as a grown-up version of Darian.

It's great that Willis realized what a deeper, far more interesting character Hallenbeck was but it really is a pity we only got one LBS movie. When Iron Man 3 came out I was hoping it might give Shane Black the stroke to put together a sequel but, alas, after how hard Sin City 2 bombed I have to figure Hollywood isn't going to be greenlighting any sequels to long dormant properties any time soon.

You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become Pauly Shore.

I love when Jimmy is like okay, what would Joe do. Shoot everyone and smoke a bunch of a cigarettes. The Hallenbeck character is A+, a truly flawed and complex hero. Totally agree about the Die Hard with a Vengeance sentiment and that's why even though I really like it, I cannot rank it above The Last Boy Scout. Plus, I love the whole "football is so fucked up" subplot. This is probably Damon Wayans best performance.

Also, I really like Shane Black the writer..  I'm not a huge fan of him behind the wheel. Tony Scott was a legend.

"What was that name you and the boys had for me back at the Comedy Store, Gordon?"

"I...I don't know, Pauly."

"Say it. SAY IT."

"Wheez...zel. Pauly Weasel."

I liked The Last Boy Scout but "best action movie of the 90s" is going a bit too far. I agree the highlight is Bruce Willis actually going somewhere really different and dark with his "disgruntled cop" character. Rest of it is rather generic though. Feels like one of those movies where you have a terrific lead character stuck in a so-so movie.

That was back when Tony's in-ya-face, over-the-top imagery targeted towards the Generation X Mountain Dew and pizza consuming audience worked. You can't sit through that for Domino. Mickey Rourke's silly putty face combined with 100 pound Keira Knightley going around and breaking peoples' noses is just too strange, unconvincing, and bizarre. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if someone spilled Drano on the film during the editing process. Tony had to be on a long LCD trip during that whole thing.

Domino is one of the few Tony Scott films I haven't seen. I never heard great things. His last movie Unstoppable is pretty good though. Denzel puts in another absurdly great performance where he didn't really have to...

TJ Miller and Ethan Suplee are the comedy relief in Unstoppable. That part in Domino is played by Mo'nique. There you go.

Also, I think he beat Ridley to the strange scene department. It may rival Cameron Diaz humping a car. There is a part in Domino early on where Keira Knightley, Silly Putty Face, and Edgar Ramirez bust into this house of a Mexican gang. It turns into a standoff until Domino Harvey (played by ole skin-n-bones Keira) appeases the lead gang member by giving him a lapdance. Words cannot do this justice. It makes my skin crawl just typing it.

This is why Denzel is awesome.

The thing I love about Unstoppable is that it a no frills story about two guys who are in constant "What The Fuck Do We Do Now?" mode.  It is a simple tale made complex by the totally apeshit insane situation the characters find themselves in.

I also like the movie because it focuses on the idea that these two guys have been taking life for granted and the things that didn't seem important suddenly become all important once the shit hits the fan.  Don't put off tomorrow what you can do today because tomorrow might not come.

Hug your kid, tell your wife that you love her, or quit fucking around and ask out that cute waitress already.

Is it controversial to say I can't wait for the super hero bubble to burst?

I'm tired of the same plots over and over again. I'm tired of seeing Bruce Wayne's parents get killed on-screen for the 96th time (It was Mr Wayne's own fucking fault for going down a dark, ominous-looking alley in a crime-ridden city in the first place! And why doesn't a rich family have bodyguards?) I'm tired of looking up on screen and knowing 95% is a green screen. I'm tired of bland PG-13 movies primed and micro-managed to appeal to everyone on the planet ever. I'm tired of wondering whether one of these actors is going to drop dead one day due to their blatant steroid abuse.

The only superhero movie I've actually been crazy about in the last few years? Dredd. And that died on its ass at the box office because presumably people want to see the 800th Wolverine backstory and not anything original.

Steven Sodenburgh is right. These movies aren't terrible and they keep people in work, but they're slowly and surely sapping Hollywood of all creativity.

Nah, lot of people are getting burned out on Hollywood fads. Much of a comic fanboy that I am, I wouldn't cry if that full movie slate on both sides fizzled out before they got finished and just stuck to TV. Better medium for it anyway

Speaking of burning out, I am fucking spent on Vampire, Werewolf, and Zombie flicks. And teen dystopian future stories that'd barely make passible shonen anime plots.

The new Avengers trailer looks fine and all, but really, what is there?

A new foe who poses THE BIGGEST THREAT TO THE WORLD? (At least til the next film comes around.)

In-fighting and people being sad and wondering if they should be superheros (SPOILER: They'll eventually make up and realize they are meant to be superheroes after all)

Giant CGI monsters than look like the giant CGI monsters they always fight?

Talented actors who really are too good for all this (Elizabeth Olsen, James Spader) but you accept they've got bills to pay and can't turn down gigs like this?

I wouldn't be against going to see it and I'll probably get around to watching it. But the idea it's going to be some amazing, all-time great movie that's worth waiting four days waiting in the line at a theater to see first is just sort of beyond me.
