@RapSheet: .@NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announces ex-FBI director Robert Mueller III will conduct an independent investigation into Rice situation

@RapSheet: The focus of the independent investigation will be handling of the Rice evidence. John Mara & Art Rooney will oversee the investigation.

I doubt this goes over well with anyone.  Now they look completely out of touch.

While Art Rooney hasn't been known for his pettiness, I can't imagine Ravens fans are going to be happy to see him involved.   And well not sure anyone is happy for Mara after he stooged the Cowboys and Redskins on that salary cap issue

Honestly, I think Ray Rice should probably sit a year, then get reinstated.  I think it's a bit ridiculous that we're talking about him never working again.  There's a lot more to people than the worst thing they ever did.  Let him sit this year, lose whatever millions he would've earned, and then let him come back.  Obviously, if there's any more incidents, he should be punished appropriately.  But if he's clean, let him work.  RBs have such a short shelf life anyway.

Goodell needs to go.  He's always been wildly inconsistent with his arbitrary punishments, and the cover up is always worse than the crime.  His baldface lies about not seeing the tape are so pathetic, there's no way for him to be credible on any issue ever again.  Get a new figurehead for the league, and give some faceless bureaucrat to be the punishment czar.

In all honesty, if they'd hit Rice with 8 games initially, I'd have been cool with that, even now with the video. A year is better but I could have lived with 8. And I'd be ok with reinstating after a year.

Having said that, if I were his team's owner, I'd have cut him back when this first came out.

Rooney and Mara are the only two owners respected enough by the media and other owners to oversee this investigation and they'll be the ones who decide if Godell stays or goes.

I doubt many people will buy two owners, no matter how well they are respected, to oversee an independent investigation.

October is shaping up to be a very difficult and uncomfortable month for the NFL.

\/\/\/  While they are good names it is not like we are getting an independent investigation.  This was another misstep.

The thing I don't get is the NFL's response to players' actions. Michael Vick has a dog fighting ring in his backyard and obtains gambling earnings. Dog fighting is bad in and of itself and it is morally reprehensible. He gets suspended indefinitely because Roger Goodell doesn't what dog owners to be (naturally) offended. Aaron Hernandez is a friggin' serial killer and the NFL of course bans him for life. Other players smoke weed (which doesn't hurt anyone except for nuts and the dumbass smoking the weed) but get 6 games suspension.

If it went the wrong way, Ray Rice could have murdered Janay Palmer. Ray Rice acts like what he did was minor setback but looking back at the press conference it didn't make him look good (not to mention that his wife's body language said 'battered spouse'). Why is the NFL all of a sudden not knowing what the hell is going on? Why is it with everything the NFL has tight control over the players and seemingly know everything that's going on, but in this case they don't know if a tape given to them was seen and don't cite a TMZ video as credible?

Honestly - if they were going to insist on owners overseeing it - the only way they could have done it was to put Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder in charge

Not that any of them are any less in the tank for Goodell too but at least they kinda sorta hate him thanks to the collusion that wasn't collusion salary cap thing

HAH.  Better yet.  Senator Mitchell is probably not doing anything at this point.  If he has a part-ownership of the Pats too he can blame it all on the Jets and Giants.

This must happen.

That's the thing, if Ray Rice came out and immediately admit what he did, acted ashamed and disgusted with himself and went to alcohol rehab and anger management classes he probably would have to sit half a season and people wouldn't be calling for his head.

Knowing what we know now, that press conference is disgusting.

The 32 NFL owners are Goodell's boss and the two most respected and powerful owners are the one's overseeing it, what other route could they have taken.

This investigation is just a formality so they have a reason to fire him come the owners meeting next month, it's going to be like the scene at the end of Casino when all the old mobsters decided who lives or dies and Goodell will have the same fate as Alan King's character.

Again, ain't shit gonna happen to Goodell. That's just the cynic in me talking. I blame the recent development with Penn State for that. I felt like with Penn State, there was some kind of justice served.

It's all just a fucking show. The actors may change, but the roles stay the same.

He isn't going to be fired for how he initially handled the scandal, it's going to be due to all of his bumbling the past few days and not having this whole thing go away quickly and quietly.

If you just spent $1.4 Billion buying the Buffalo Bills do you want Roger Goodell at your side trying to get taxpayers to pay for a new stadium? if you own the 31 other teams in the NFL do you want Roger Goodell at the wheel when it come to the Los Angeles situation? The smart owners know that an expansion team will bring them a insane amount of money in expansion fees, do you want that golden goose killed via the Raiders or Rams moving there when their leases are up after next season? Do you want the Chargers mucking things up with their claims of territorial rights to LA? Do you want him as the face of the league trying to get taxpayers and investors to build a stadium at minimal cost to the league and potential owner? I could go on and on.

Goodell hasn't worked anywhere but the NFL and he got the internship because his father was a powerful political figure in New York, he doesn't have the public realtions background like Pete Rozelle or law background of Paul Tagliabue. He's a rich kid who had the connections and kissed enough ass to get where he is, he's disposable to the owners.

For starters, they could have put a woman on the investigation panel.  That would have been a start.  3 connected NFL guys makes it look like they are protecting themselves.

The smart move would be to move Goodell out and slide in someone new while telling the NFLPA that the Code of Conduct policies would be replaced.  Part of the problem is that short of committing murder the teams and league will cover up everything.

He does not have to be fired.  He can step down but keep the title until a successor is named.

One step closer to Commissioner Condaleeza Rice...

Isn't she already busy on the NCAA tournament panel? I also could swear Rice wondered why she was even on the panel. Maybe the context for that is, "I wonder why I'm on this panel, when I should be the NFL commish."
