Confessions of a wrestling fan

Recommended Posts

I swore to never watch WWE programming again the following times:

When Charlie Haas was released the first time. I was outraged

When Randy Orton beat Rey Mysterio at No Way Out 2006 to win his Wrestlemania 22 title shot.

I was back watching within 2 weeks both times. I was also 17.

I thought the apter mags were real until I was in  my early 20's(early 2000's), and I was in college at the time. No real moment that I caught on, probably saw them online somewhere. . .

early/mid '97, one of the mags had an "interview" with Sting. i was confused, because Sting hadn't talked in forever. after reading it, i was 100% sure the magazine had made the whole thing up, and considered writing to WCW to alert them to this.

I was one of the actual people that cheered for Goldberg.  I admit it.

I did also. We all did in our college years where I went to school.

I was the only one who appreciated Jericho's shtick though.  (Everyone thought Eddy, Malenko and Benoit were awesome, so it wasn't hatred of midgets- they just hated Jericho)

My guilty pleasure: I actually kinda enjoyed Big Daddy matches as a kid, though I didn't start caring about pro wrestling until I moved to the states and saw the Midnight Express crush jobbers- those jobber matches are what made me a fan.

(the Bobby/Stan combination)

New Blackjacks were one of my favourite tag teams :/

Part of this is down to Windham being one of my favourites since childhood, the other was I loved the look, the third was I loved Bradshaw's smashmouth style.

As an aside, why was there an influx of tag teams with 'new' pinned to it? Sounded fucking awful and I'm sure people were smart enough to differentiate

Raven is one of my favorite wrestlers of all time.

Public Enemy were one of my favorite tag teams for a while, pretty much until the end of their WCW stint as by that time I was starting to realize they weren't that great.

Count me as another Raven fan.

At one time my favorite wrestler was "Dangerous" Danny Davis...by a wide margin.  It was my first experience with an evil ref that was actually a ref (not a guest referee turned bad) and I bought into him hook, line and sinker.

I vaguely remember a match on Action Zone pitting Mantaur against Aldo Montoya.  I am pretty sure it was them.  I also remember going to class the next day and telling people, "This is a great example of why the New Generation is going to be just fine."

Speaking of dads: when Nitro was red hot in 97/98 there was NO ONE more over with my dad than Wrath (with the exception of Hogan/the NWO as a whole, because of the time they got escorted to the ring by the Hells Angels). One of the fondest memories of my youth is watching him mark out for that damn pumphandle slam.

I was convinced Wrath was going to fight Goldberg at Starrcade in a streak vs streak match. Thanks a lot Kevin Nash.

Probably my for realz most embarrassing is having Billy Gunn T-shirts made with we (heart) Billy Gunn and a picture of his mug shot and going to ROH shows with it.

I enjoyed the hell out of Ernest "The Cat" Miller at the end of WCW.  He was intentionally, unintentionally funny if that makes sense.  He knew what he was doing was utterly absurd and people were laughing at him and not with him, so he decided that he was going to turn that shit up to 10 and work the shit out of it.  He put on a loaded red shoe, kicked a guy in the face, and did a James Brown impression, how can anyone deny his greatness.  Miss Jones is also in my top 5 female managers...seriously that woman was gorgeous.  I don't care what anyone says, The Cat was great.

I watch wrestling for the characters/storylines, and FFWD through 95% of the matches.  Raw takes about 30 minutes to watch.

ETA: I enjoyed the Demon/Vampiro graveyard match because it was basically a Scooby Doo skit.  Very well laid out.

I had a moment in 2002 or so, I think during the Eddy indy tour or maybe to see Slaughter, where we went to a random MA indy, which I knew nothing about, but Danny Davis was the first guy out, and I wasn't expecting that at all, and I'm not sure I ever marked out for anyone in public more than that, since it was a total surprise to me.

I didn't fully understand that wrestling was completely fake until I was 11 years old in 1997. :\

Even before then, my brother and I would have our wrestling matches. Instead on doing splashes, and suplexes, and brawling, we would chain wrestle and work a body part.

I think WWF 1996 is crimminaly underrated.

I never liked studio wrestling shows.

The ROH, heavy-workrate style is hard for me to get into.

I loved the shit out of the Invasion angle. In hindsight, yeah guys like Goldberg, Sting, Flair, etc. would have been really something special. But It was something just new and crazy to me. The angle was WCW vs. WWF, so thats why I didn't mind WWF midcarders having matches with WCW midcarders. Adding to that, I thought that Booker T should have been leading the alliance since he was WCW Champion and he was working with Austin.

It's only been in the past two or three years that I googled Paul Wight and finally discovered that the "Big Show is Andre's son" stuff was just kayfabe for the Hogan feud.

Along these same lines, for a while, I was under the impression that Trevor Murdoch was Dusty's son.

"Stone Cold" Steve Austin basically bores me.   I was a big fan of "Stunning" Steve Austin until around the time they paired him up with Col. Robert Parker.

I only pretend to be a serious fan of the territories (kidding.  Sorta).  Sure, I'm a huge mark for Mid South, Crockett, Georgia,. WCW pre-Hogan, etc., but.... if I had to choose between the best years of the territories and WWF 1988-1993. I'd pick WWF every time.  That era should be everything I hate - poor workrate, ridiculous gimmicks, wacky booking, etc., but I tend to really enjoy the cartoony nature of the pro-duct.  Also, i am fully aware that the "Sgt. Slaughter, Iraqi sympathizer" angle was ridiculous, exploitative, and tasteless - but I love it anyway.  Late Hulkamania era/early part of New Generation era may be my favorite wrestling ever.

I still enjoy Adam Bomb in the WWF.  Great look, over-the-top gimmick, roided-up physique.  At the time, I had no idea how the gimmick didn't get over.  Then I started watching Clark in WCW and elsewhere and it all made sense to me.

I was having a hard time thinking of one until the above. This is shameful... I've only been to a single wrestling show in my life. It was an indie at a fair when I was a kid. There was a tag team that came out to "Aces High" by Maiden and the headliner was some guy I don't remember and a drunk Brian Lee who was going under Skull (or whatever his DOA name was).
