DC Comics omnibus thread

Batman: The Cult (August-November 1988) collects Batman: The Cult #1-4 written by Jim Starlin with art by Bernie Wrightson. Batman is kidnapped while investigating disappearances. He’s held by a religious leader, Deacon Joseph Blackfire and his followers, the Underworlders. Batman is brainwashed by the Deacon through drugs, torture and hunger. This made for one of the more distinctive Batman books out there. The bloodiest Bat book as well. We see Batman mentally broken and what it does to him, he doubts himself. Jason Todd’s Robin is sued very effectively, can only say that for a few Todd/Robin tales. This was his best showing.

Batman: A Death in the Family, Batman #426-429 (December 1988) is written by Jim Starlin and drawn by Jim Aparo. Jason Todd is looking for his Mother as the Joker’s in the Middle East to make money as his funds are low. This was one of the few big Batman stories I’d not read. A Death in the Family is a great story and his big repercussions in the Batman mythos as Jason Todd/Robin is kidnapped, tortured with a crowbar and killed by the Joker. The crowbar and time bomb sequence is chilling. Jason was killed by the results of a public telephone vote asking whether Jason lives or dies. Elements of the story are in Batman mediums such is the influence.

Jim Aparo’s cover for the collected version is one of the most memorable Batman images. Batman’s narration boxes are another strong point. The story does take a surreal turn when Joker becomes a UN Ambassador for Iran. I was very surprised at the first page caption reading “kiddie-porn ring’s main warehouse” in a mainstream comic book.

The amount of hype in some spots over Batman's dick showing up in Damned today is unreal. I wish Wizard magazine still existed so it could show up in "Hot comics" with "1st Bat Penis" next to it.

God bless the Black Label.

That the new Azzarello/Bermejo book, right?

DC is the worst. I don't know if it's Didio or Lee or Johns or what.

Batman spoiler:

Let's do two issues showing how fun Dick Grayson is so that we can shoot him in the head.

This do this shit year after year after year. We're just about to get it in Heroes in Crisis too.

I don't think there's any fixing it at this point. You could make Waid the EIC and he'd never get out from under the rock.

Shame Dick Grayson gets hit and miss treatment. From the high of Batman under Grant Morrison, then Scott Snyder to a low like this.

To be fair Hush really is only smoke and mirrors.

I know you're making a joke, but that's actually a great way to describe Hush. It's got great art and ticks off a lot of "cool stuff for Batman to do," but the story is dumb as fuck.

Batman: Damned #1 kind of sucked. But I've never liked Azzarello's Batman stories, so your mileage may vary. I would have liked it more without the pretentious narration.

Its Didio. He has been trying to fuck with Dick for years, and Johns departure gives him all the room he can to do what he wants unless the new president, Pam Lifford, pays attentions to the comics division and realizes how moronic this idea and others from Didio are. Since Diane Nelson never did, I would expect the same from the new lady. As far as the situation goes,

Spoiler

my understanding is Dick will survive, and they will be running an amnesia angle. Scott Lobdell I think is taking over the writing duties for Nightwing where the story will further unfold.

He sends them out in bright red costumes. He's subconsciously hoping they get shot.

Sooo.... does anyone want to say aloud what Bats is subconsciously hoping to get out of Robin's tiny, tiny green swim trunks?

'Cause I certainly don't.

I've got no real hope that writer will do anything interesting or readable with the situation.  Been a long time since I thought he wrote a decent book.

Honestly a big part of my problem is just that it's a moment of brutal realism that breaks the internal logic of books. Specifically that Batman wears an armoured cowl and sends his kids out in domino masks.

Sidekicks in general are illogical "let me endanger some child because I can". Mostly a DC thing.

Sidekicks gave the former target audience a character they could identify with.

Now nerds think that Spider-Man being married makes him too old and unhip.  They worship at the altar of Batman as a loner/anti-authority figure while lapping up story after story where he sets up a goddamn police state and then bag on Superman for being a boy scout/government stooge.
