2014 WORLD CUP THREAD

RIPPA

Recommended Posts

By the way, I remember how we were talking about our "own experience top World Cup XI" a while back. I remember pairing Suker and Ronaldo up front and dropping Klose because "I don´t want that many Germans". That cat has scored 16 World Cup goals, competed in 4 semi-finals and made the finals twice and has been a vital part for Germany´s - quite succesful - attacking play. I think I can justify him being in. I would probably still rotate him with Suker around sixty minutes into games - old men need their rest and all - but I´ll be damned if he doesn´t deserve a place among the World Cup Legends.

Was that a serendipitous find while looking for other stuff involving young Brazilians?

I don't know about those last two.  The most points ever by one team in an NFL game is 72, and the most points ever by one team in an NBA game is 186, so both those numbers would be higher than a team in those leagues has ever scored.  But the most goals by one soccer team in a World Cup game is 10.

It's not random, but it is stupid. The average number of goals scored in World Cup matches is 2.74, or 1.37 per team per game. 7/1.37=5.11, so basically they're multiplying the average score of a team in other sports by 5.11.

I think if you apply the chart to mere statistics, it won´t really work. You have to consider non-empirical values like the surroundings (World Cup Semi Final) and level of competition aswell as the importance home advantage can have in football. Also you have to consider that unlike any other sports, football always has the possibility of a total shutout from both teams up until penalty kicks (which aren´t counted as real goals). Even then it seems exaggerated I think, though, although not that much if we are looking at US-Football. The basketball points equivalent appears extremely ridiculous, though, but the sports are uncomparable anyway, it´s like apples and oranges being compared. You can´t resolve that statistically, it´s more of a philosophical question.

Netherlands v Argentina is a very tactical game, both teams seemed disciplined so far. Argentina looked a little better in the first half, but both teams pretty much cancelled each other out.

Seemed like the tactics weren´t that big a factor in the second half. Both teams switched into super cautious mode understandably preventing unneccessary errors. Up until the very end when Holland tried to prevent extra time from happening, both backlines seemed untroubled, but Argentina looked quite shaky in one or two instances.

Thirty minutes more, hopefully both teams will try to prevent a shootout and start firing shots and go for the win in extra time.
