Speaking of GiTS, Shirow needs to stop messing around with those porn artbooks like Wild Wet West and get me another Seburo Ballistics edition of Intron Depot.

You know I’ve liked the look of some of these CG anime recently, but this I’m not into at all. Looks like a modern Mainframe show.

I will give it a look, but I'm not a fan of this look either and almost everything using CG these days.

I'll be checking that out mostly due to the two creative minds behind it, but I'm not digging that design on the Major.

I think the most important question is... is Kanno doing the music?
I mean with Origa's passing we won't be getting her awesome vocals for an opeming song

Heads up to Prime subscribers. They just uploaded a boatload of anime. One of them is a cyberpunk anime called Eat-Man, and it’s follow-up Eat-Man 98. I’ve never watched this before, so it’s completely new to me. Highlight(Or really lowlight) is the fact that these episodes are transfers from VHS copies, and feature burned in subs. Also it’s a pretty good show so far.

I’ve also been watching Gundam 00. Burned through the first season, and have enjoyed it, but I’m mixed on the plot. Or really I don’t buy the way they’ve framed the multiple sides of the shows central conflict. It’s a little too manipulative with how “Death” sometimes ways heavy on the characters, and then other times it’s like swatting a fly. Such drastic change from other Gundam shows I’ve seen before leading up to this(Did not watch Wing. Which is the show people compare this to the most). But when the bodies start to pile up with characters that have faces, and names, that’s when the show picks up steam.

I liked Gundam 00 outside of the space magic. And the movie. I thought it was a fairly genuine attempt at making a new spinoff series that's not connected to the UC timeline.

I’m only 9 episodes in, but if this is as bad as the space magic gets then I’m perfectly fine with it. So far season two feels more balanced, and connected. Like after many painful sitcom scenes that didn’t help me like the character, Saji is finally interacting with the main cast, and it’s okay. They actually found a way to make those scenes payoff. I’ve still seen that shit pulled off better elsewhere, if you wanted me to like a POV character.

Can't remember which I watched, but Eat-man was weird to me however long ago I watched it.

I like 00. I would have liked it more if they had given it another season to flesh everything out. Some of the Gundam shows really need more than 50 episodes to pull off what they want. Have you seen IBO yet? It and Turn A are probably the most different from the norm Gundam series.

I haven’t seen it yet. I want to, but I’m going to get through 00 first. I also would rather own it on Blu-ray before watching it, but the sets combined are expensive. Turn A looks like one of those Gundam’s I’ll be saving for last. The look of the show is a real turn-off(no pun intended) for me. Other Gundam’s I haven’t watched... V looks like something I won’t touch. ZZ I was told might be skippable, but reading stuff here, and there makes me want to give it a chance. Wing looks like the stuff I don’t like about 00 x30, with a way less interesting plot.

Seen Victory all the way through once and didn't particularly like it. Tried watching it again a few years ago, but never made it past 1/5 the show. Its not terribly good at all. ZZ is ok, but suffers with the style it has coming off of Z and with part of its story being changed because of Char's Counter Attack being approved. Wing is a mess that is somewhat enjoyable. 00 is more in line with what Wing likely wanted to be.

V is in my top 3 of worst Gundam shows. The only good things about V are the underrated ED songs and the mecha designs.

I actually prefer ZZ to Zeta. Yes, the rise of Gremi makes no sense, and yes the Moon Moon eps are two of the worst Gundam eps of all time, but I just think overall ZZ is better. Zeta is generally depressing especially towards the end. You also start to see some of the worst aspects of Tomino's storytelling and attitude towards women in Zeta with Reccoa being the prime example.  Oh, and Silent Voice > any song in Zeta.

(And speaking of Tomino, his recent comments about Makoto Shinkai and KyoAni really makes it look like he's gone off the deep end...)

I don't know if I can see ZZ as better than Zeta, but I can totally understand liking it more than Zeta

I think AGE is slightly worse than SEED Destiny. AGE feels like it's three disjointed series crammed together. It starts declining with the second part and then falls totally apart with the last part. With SEED Destiny there's still some kind of theme present throughout the entire series even if it did a 180 after the first arc. Plus there's at least a decent ep or two in the last half of SEED Destiny.

I may be a bit biased, though, due to SRW's Shinn rewrite. I'd probably have to rewatch SEED Destiny to see how much different Shinn is.

I've never thought of 00 as a departure from UC. More of an attempt to kinda redo W

The real departure IS G Gundam (and still the most fun Gundam series overall). Its batshit insane because Imagawa loves batshit insane robot fights.

AGE didn't make me hate everyone including characters I had previously liked unlike SEED Destiny. AGE wasn't disjointed. AGE's big problem was that they took a 3 generation story that went over the course of 50-60 years and tried to cram the whole thing into a 50 episode series. Nothing gets fleshed out, and everything was badly rushed. Honestly, I liked the idea of AGE. The execution just sucked. I was never into even the idea of SEED Destiny.

See, I never thought of 00 being a redo of W.  I know W's issue was mech powerlevels being all over the fucking place and changed by plot necessity (like Epyon being able to destroy super space fortress with one sword slash but the 5 Main Gundams can't take out one super space fortress on their own, and even super OP Wing Zero's Death Star Laser could only disintegrate a piece of it).  But yeah, I can see OO as Wing with better pacing and characters and story and...

I will tolerate no smack talk of G Gundam, or this hand of mine will burn red.

And this is probably why I need to rewatch SEED and then SEED Destiny, because SRW has probably skewed my impression of the SEED characters.

Now, of course, if they had done what the original plan supposedly was (first arc focused on Athrun and Cagalli which we basically got, second arc focused on Kira and Lacus, and the third and longest arc bring Shinn to the forefront as the SEED characters step into the background) and basically did a modern version of Zeta like how SEED was supposed to be a modern version of First Gundam, I think it would have been received a lot better.

I wonder if the true story about the changes will ever come out.  Until it does, though, I'll still believe based on the (albeit circumstantial) evidence I've seen the Cagalli rumor...

G Gundam has one of the most likable casts of any Gundam show I’ve watched. Domon Kasshu is insane, but yet he’s so sincere about it. No Gundam pilot has ever been so honest, and excepting of his own fragile state. He’s also a Columbo of sorts as he’ll bluff people of his simplemindedness for 95% of episodes, to then sucker in his opponents to victory.

The problem with G Gundam is the episodic structure of it. The way Domon goes from battle to battle is a nice narrative nod to the fighting game genre that inspires the series, but it’s a mess to the plot of the show. The show is at its best when Domon is battling the Devil Gundam, and Master Asia. If they somehow connected these stories better with the main plot, then fans of the franchise would of ranked it hire at the time.

Well, to be fair, G Gundam is more akin to the classic super robot shows of the 70s, so Domon fighting a different opponent every week makes sense like how Kouji fought a different mechanical beast every week.
