The first 3 episodes of Kamen Rider 01 have damn fun, especially with the debut of Kamen Rider VALKYRIE Rushing Cheetah form!
The color scheme is such a tribute to Dekaranger's DekaSwan that it is impossible for me to not love it!

I think I only check into Kamen Rider just for the Henshin’s. This might top the list.

Is the thing she puts in her belt a cassette?

Xfinity customers get Tubi for free as a part of their subscription so I hit up their Anime folder and finally watched The Belladonna of Sadness all the way through.

I feel that I need a shower and should probably check into a rehab program for my LSD addiction.

I could also stand to get some Butter Pecan ice cream to cheer me up.

I have nothing against modern anime per se, just that I’d rather watch old stuff. I was telling the guys about the “anime boom” in the late 80s when I was an undergrad and one of the guys on my floor was getting fan sub/dub video tapes of stuff and we marveled at stuff for sale in the Whole Toon catalog.

The problem now is so much seems to be... interchangeable. It all seems the same to me these days. Sure there are some real gems here and there but you really have to sift through some crap to get the gems you want.

It reminds me of the argument about British TV was better than US TV. We were only getting the “best” shows imported to mostly PBS, so that’s what people were judging all UK TV by. They were not seeing mediocre ITV sitcoms and the like.

We only used to get the “best”  anime in the 70s and 80s (well, and Marine Boy).  And now we can see almost everything’s available.

I really miss the ultraviolent anime I grew up on -- Fist of the North Star, Wicked City, the kind that earned its "Not For Kids" sticker. Do they even make stuff like that anymore?

That shit died as soon as Anime companies couldn’t afford to fund it after the industry collapsed. Probably also because the horror fad had died out, and a lot of those(especially Madhouse’s) were inspired by American horror film’s of the late 80’s. But it’s definitely because the industry was suffering, so you weren’t getting a lot of high budget experimental anime aimed at adults, and instead they focused on safe, but questionable stuff.

Now that you bring that old stuff up, it’s reminding me of that Ninja Scroll sequel that Kawajiri couldn’t get funded, and probably never will.

Parasyte and Terraformers? I feel like there are probably others I'm forgetting.

Hell, I don't even know those two. I was thinking Vampire Hunter D, Urotsukidoji (which verged on pornography -- I was an advanced middle schooler), and random stuff that would come out to the Blockbuster shelves that were invariably about an hour long and about killing demons. I forgot all about Ninja Scroll until LoneWolf posted about it though, so there might be some blank spots in my memory there.

We also got the other Kawajiri film, Demon City Shinjuku.

The gorgeous Darkside Blues

The really shamelessly incorrectly sold in the west, Ninja Resurrection...

The absolutely insane, M. D. Geist

All on YouTube, BTW. So don’t feel bad for watching them on there until they are available in the states again on paid streaming platforms.

Hokuto No Ken (Fist of The Northstar) got the "Savior At The Century's End" movies about a decade back, that retold the Sauzer arc and final Raoh arc along with some OVA side projects, as well as the prequel series Souten No Ken (Fist of The Blue Sky). The retelling of the Sauzer arc is probably the best of the recent Hokuto No Ken projects (though Souten No Ken Regenesis was kinda fun)

Well check them out. Both are fairly violent and decent-solid shows.

Imagine seeing Urotsukidoji: Legend of The Overfiend in an actual legit/non-porn movie theater... fuck that was a harrowing experience. A theater full of people encouraging a high school student to chop his own horn and replace it with a demon schwang. I remember walking out of there and my friend turning to me and saying "I'm pretty sure that ending makes me want to either kill  myself or sit down and read copious amounts of Proust".

The Angelika Film Center in NYC can be both a marvelouss place or a horrifying one
