It was announced that voice actor Unsho Ishizuka passed away this past week.

Quote

Since his 1984 debut in voice acting as the narrator in Giant Gorg, Ishizuka played a large number of starring roles in anime. He is perhaps best known for his roles as Jet Black in Cowboy Bebop; Professor Oak, Narrator, and various Pokémon in the Pokémon franchise; Mr. Satan in Dragon Ball Super; and Joseph Joestar in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable. Most recently he has voiced the characters Willibard Joachim von Merkatz in The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These, Dino Golzine in Banana Fish, Cain Ibrahim Hassan in Last Hope, and the narrator in Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online. Ishizuka was also active in Japanese dubs of Western films, most notably dubbing roles played by Liam Neeson and Laurence Fishburne.

I'd probably recognize him best as the voice actor for Guld from Macross Plus.

Been watching a ton of stuff. Or it feels like a ton for me. I don't watch much anime usually but me and my kids watch a bit.

Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans.

I've got about 5 episodes left in the first season. I like the space political aspects of the show. I don't know if I'd actually want it to lighten up, but there are times where I chose something else because I want something a little less dry. Mikazuki is a pretty boring dude as well.

Sword Art Online

I just finished the first series. I wasn't feeling it at first though the premise was cool. Then it picked up and I started to like the world and the different people in it. I just liked the idea of some people just resigning themselves to "living" in the game and enjoying it. Then the second half started and I fucking HATED it. It just went all in on the perv. Sister not sister love, a girl calling him daddy all the time, tentacle porn, rape revenge. One of the worst 180s I've seen in a show.

Tokyo Ghoul

I finished the first two series. Really dug the first series. The second was hit and miss until the last half, with the last episode being phenomenal. Juuzou Suzuya is one of my favorite characters. Only 4 eps into re: and the art looks not as good. The story wasn't grabbing me yet so I took a break to watch other stuff. Probably about to binge it before the next season comes out.

My Hero Academia

I love this. Early on I was worried that Midoriya was going to suck by always winning, but they started to show the affect his power has on him, and how he has to adapt, which made him more interesting. I think what's best about this show is that it has easily one of the best casts. I fucking love every character. Iida is my favorite. He's the best Cyclops ever. My kids love this show so much they're going as two of its characters for Halloween. It's up there with Gurren Lagann as one of my favorites.

Ancient Magus Bride

About half way through this. My wife and I really like this one. Some really creative fantasy elements. If there are any D&D players/DMs out there, this has some great inspiration in it. It moves slower than the others, but I find it fascinating. Very nice character designs and the music is neat.

SOUL EATER

I just started it because I watched the intro on youtube and was like "Oh yeah, that's a show I'll watch." About 10 episodes in and I love it so far. Great design, fun characters, and some cool action. It does a good job of using its different characters and switching focus.

I'm glad someone else made the Iida/Cyclops connection, I was starting to think I was seeing things not actually there.

IBO is one of my favorite Gundam series at this point. Don't love Mikazuki, but I appreciate him far more than his similar predecessors in Heero & Setsuna.

The next season of SAO is far better than the first. Don;t let the second half of S1 scare you away.

Bride loses a bit of quality in the last third or so. Still worth watching overall.

Soul Eater is weaker is the second half if I recall correctly. I think that is when they really went into the anime original side of things.

Really?  I find Mikazuki pretty much a total blank slate and is only defined by everyone  else in Tekkadan.  Heero is a much better character by the end of Wing IMO.

(Now let's debate which Gundam protagonist is the best...)

Wing is pretty terrible. I don't recall Heero growing all that much. More to the point they pull off the whole semi-sociopath deal better with Mikazuki. Beyond that Mika works out better because he doesn't really take the lead the same way, acting more as support for the rest of the cast. I prefer him to Heero by a good amount, and I don't disliek Heero.

As far as the best protag goes I would have to do some real thinking on that.

I loved IBO and in no way does it lighten up, probably right alongside 08th MS Team for heaviest of the Gundams.

I'll echo that yeah, 2nd arc of SAO was real fucking weird and almost off the rails, but man do they make up for it in the next arc, watch at least through that.  They it kinda goes just there.

Soul Eater was frustrating, because half way through they outpaced the magna and went in a totally different direction with a couple fights I would've loved to have seen animated, but yeah.  This is one of the shows I hold up with the "yeah, I'd rather they go on hiatus for stretches and let the manga get far enough ahead that they got plenty to run, although it'd be nice if SOME shows that did that (staring at YOU, Fairy Tail), actually picked back up and finished.

I ponder checking out My Hero Academia but I'm not sure if the 16 year old would go for it and it's probably too much for the 6 year old.

We struggle due to such limited time. The 16 year old wants to watch new stuff he hears about from friends. I want to show him Utena or Lain or whatever. I'm just old.

My 4 year old fucking loves it. I'd say it's more family friendly than say WWE. There's some innuendo every once in a while, but it's more silly than pervy. Nothing really cringe-y.

Oh holy shit dude he's the most Scott Summers motherfucker besides Scott Summers. Maybe that's why I love the show so much, it's basically the best X-Men Lite.

Now I want to see the Phalanx Covenant story but with Class 1-A.

I love that you label Mikazuki as a semi-sociopath, because I've been calling him a sociopath sense the beginning. He doesn't feelI agree that he doesn't like the lead, he's really just the heater they bring in when shit goes down. It's up to the other characters to take care of what is ultimately the more interesting aspects of the show. So it balances out okay. I don't have to care about him to enjoy the show.

Because he is one. I think l he makes a decent enough character in his own right, but he is clearly damaged and that along with having some sociopathic tendencies keeps him from growing a bit more properly like the other damaged but more well adjusted orphans in IBO.

Oh lord are we really going to start a "Best Gundam Lead Protagonist" discussion?

I mean how is it not Camille Bidan?

(unless you want to be contrarian and say that Char is really the hero of everything from One Year War through the end of Zeta)

He wasn't?

Kidding aside, I was partial to Shiro, since the end of 08th he and Aina pretty much said fuck it, called bullshit on the whole war, and walked away.  But 08th might be my favorite Gundam.

Kamille was always a bit annoying to me. He is high, but  can't say he is the best.

Also I hate Char, but like Quattro.

I hadn't even thought about i, but yeah Shiro might take it for me.

Okay my family begged me to watch the first episode of Sword Art Online 2(they've already watched it and my son digs it). I gave the first two eps a watch and they are a billion times better than the second half of season 1. So... I guess I'll stick it out.
