dogwelder
Watched four shows this morning: Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens reminds me a lot of Durarara with the multitude of characters that somehow tie into each other. Darling In The Franxx looks to be an interesting mecha show with your typical Trigger animation. Death March To The Parallel World Rhapsody seems a little too close to being a SAO clone. Marchen Madchen's first episode isn't bad for an isekai, but I don't have high hopes for the series.

Nice to see someone else here did. Yeah. I definitely recommend Ajin. Probably sounded more lukewarm in my earlier post than I actually am. For the most part, I thought the characterization and plotting were spot on and they were definitely more creative about fight scenes than I expected. The trailer gives you the impression it's your typical anime, with supernatural "black ghosts" beating the stuffing out of each other. In reality, the Ajin's black ghosts are used sparingly. The villains basically form a terrorist cell and carry out tactical strikes using conventional weapons (guns and knives). The "black ghosts" act mainly as a trump card. The heroes do the same, arming themselves and learning to shoot and fight from their military and private security allies. That's probably what makes the violence more disturbing. Characters are more likely to be shot to death than whomped on by supernatural creatures. Not a fan of cgi animation either, but it looked ok here. I didn't even think about it after the first half-dozen eps or so. Definitely thought it worked better here than in Knights of Sidonia. Starting Tokyo Ghoul later tonight. Probably watching the first few arcs of Dragon Ball Super next weekend (the dubbed eps). Still surprised how much I like DB Super, particularly since I've been trying to watch DBZ Kai and still feel like it's a slog.
John Austin
I'm pretty certain his elimination is inevitable but man I'm so rooting for Gohan to be as close to the end as possible. I'm with you in trying to watch Kai, not as good as original Z was, but I'm a fan of the Falconer soundtrack since it was the first that I saw of Z and to me its not the same.
Cliff Hanger
Hat tip to @dogwelder for pointing out that the new Mazinger movie is getting a Fathom Events screening on Feb 11 (and in some venues the 12th). Unfortunately, the theatre near me that runs most Fathom shit isn't running this one, only a theatre that is 2 hours and 15 minutes by Metro on Sunday schedule. But it's cool that it's happening. J.H.
Kokkoku is by far the show I'm enjoying most so far in he new season. After that is Overlord II (Electric Boogaloo) and Gran Crest Senki Mind you, its only week 2 so far for most shows James
Victator
Super is ending in March. Was going to cut my wrist then remembered Toriyama is writing a new movie. So that buys me a year.
Spritenaut 32
91 Days showed up in the mail today and I wasn't really into Tokyo Ghoul, so i started Days. Only 3 eps in, but it's good. Really F***ing good. No surprise. The studio, Shuka, is an offshoot of Brain Base and the writer also wrote Jokers Game. Jokers Game needed more narrative cohesion, but the individual episodes were really strong. Going to watch another 2 or three eps before i go to bed. It will be replaced by a new Ge Ge Ge No Kitaro, which I am all for, as it means Masako Nozawa will still have steady work! James
Victator
So tonight's episode was awesome. Spoiler Gohan went out like a champ.
John Austin
As much as i hated to see it happen, it was an epic way to go out. It really was an awesome episode!
Jiji
Holy fucking shit, I just finished Devilman Crybaby. What an appropriate title, as I was balling at least a few times in the last 2 or 3 episodes. There were moments where I thought it was going in a very dark, cynical direction but it was really fucking great (which is funny when you think of the ending). I had never read the original manga, nor seen the '70s TV show (I read how they changed the ending... whut?), so it was fascinating to see both how influential the manga is and the drama play out. The Ryo/Akira relationship is the clear foundation for the Guts and Griffiths' dynamic in Berserk. Neon Genesis takes a whole lot from the ending and morality themes, but this adaptation also borrows from NGE. There were some really powerful scenes sprinkled throughout the first 3 or 4 episodes (nothing to do with the violence... emotionally powerful). The cat in the box is heartbreaking and killed me every time. Kukun freestyling to Miki Kuroda was probably the best scene of the entire series and those two characters are way too relatable. The scene in the hangar where Akira meets his "parents" was the first time the series nailed that balance of emotion and action that it later masters. I do wish they had a bit more time to tell the story of the manga, as things definitely felt rushed near the end. I initially didn't even notice the post-credit scene in the last episode. Really neat! Spoiler Two moons = two resets. The old earth becomes a moon, first with the prehistoric demon earth and now this one with Satan forgetting everything. I feel really drained. TheVileOne
Arifureta got delayed, but hopefully that means White Fox isn't going to half-ass it and make it into an awesome show like RE:Zero.
Spritenaut 32
Should I be watching the D. Gray Man? Looks kinda interesting, but I've never paid much attention to it because only half the run was released in the US. Just noticed that Funimation is releasing the back half of the run. Still not dubbed, but official R1 releases are better than nothing. Looked around the 'net for reviews, but didn't find much on the sites I usually rely on for anime reviews. Thinking I'll add it to my want list if I hear good things about it.
Eivion
I enjoyed though there is at least one season that is mostly filler and the newest season was unfortunately rushed.
TheVileOne
I think D.Gray Man is alright. I think it's a decent Shonen Jump/action-adventure type of show. However, based on what I've seen of the latest season, it's all very confusing. All sorts of general weirdness with the backstory of the main characters that I don't understand at all. It gets very convoluted. The new art design for the latest season was a bit jarring, but the animation is better than the earlier seasons at least. For B-more peeps, it seems to have a noonish showing at the Egyptian in Hanover. That's the mall located next to Maryland Live casino. It's like ten minutes from my house. Here's hoping I can get my boo to indulge my inner geek for one afternoon. I am stoked because the Egyptian recently installed recliners during their renovation during the winter and those seats are fucking awesome.
Spritenaut 32
Rewatching Moribito. I really wish I liked this show more. I think it's well done also kinda dull. On the one hand, it's exactly what I want from an anime: looks great, well-written. adult characters, no silly anime comedy or "googly" faces, no fanservice, strong female lead. etc. And it's written and directed by Kenji Kamiyama, who is responsible for the Standalone Complex and generally is a "must watch" guy for me. On the other hand, I find the show kinda dull viewing and start losing interest after about ten eps.
Cliff Hanger
Against my better judgement, I watched the first episode of Devilman Crybaby. I know what nihilistic misery the second half of Devilman entails, and that it's the exact kind of anime I always hate myself after watching. But curiosity got the better of me, and if I didn't already know the big secret of the show I'd probably be on board. The psychedelic body horror of the nightclub fight hit me in just the right way, it's gross and uncomfortable but stylish as hell, and I like the premise. But...I know how it ends, and I know I don't want to watch that part, so i won't watch what comes between.
Jiji
I would strongly disagree it's a nihilistic ending. There is a point to it all.
TheVileOne
There's always the Devilman vs. Cyborg 009 ova series which is also on Netflix. Basically like an anime version of Marvel Superhero Team-Up. For anyone that wants a palette cleanser show that's a lot more feel-good about yourself and humanity after Devilman Crossover, you should check out the Morose Monokean . Every episode is streaming now on Crunchy roll and Funimation. http://www.crunchyroll.com/the-morose-mononokean Also, Production IG's Ancient Magus Bridge! This show is freaking high-tier. Beautiful, elegant, and some elegant music as well. Imagine Guillermo del Toro making an anime series, and that's kind of what this is. Based on the manga. Production IG did a great job here. As a fan of the manga, I'm really ecstatic over how they've brought it to life. This show will pull at your heart-strings, but in a nice, bittersweet way. http://www.crunchyroll.com/the-ancient-magus-bride
J.H.
There is a point to the end of Devilman... to get you to read Violence Jack for the return match between Amon and Satan (and also try and see how Go Nagai ties Cutie Honey int the mythology as well) James
Victator
So I finally realized the big mistake that Freeza is making in the tourney. He is too scared to go all out for fear of draining his stamina like he did in Resurrection F. Which is going to be a liability against Toppo and Jiren. Goku and Vegeta realize conserving energy is useless at this level. Gohan too to a lesser extent.
J.H.
Either way we know U7 wins simply because Toriya,ma said the nothng in Super will changethe ending of DB/DBZ so its al kin of.. moot? James
Victator
Not necessarily. The drama here is how U7 wins and if the dead universes return. Freeza is still lurking about and the end of Z makes no references to him one way or another. Now there is an off chance U11 wins and U7 gets revived or is spared somehow. I wonder if the potara get used and if they go nuts with Jiren/Toppo fused vs Vegito.
