Swift
Just watched the first episode of Season 2. They almost had me believing that they would ditch 99% of their successful cast of characters and start afresh, despite seeing some of the actresses' names in the opening credits. I was trying to figure out a way that they could involve the other characters now that Piper is in a new prison. But it looks like she's going to be headed back there in the next episode. That's also somewhat of a shame, because some of the new characters seemed interesting. The black chick who takes 4 shits a day had me laugh out loud a couple of times. Seeing as this is a Netflix series, let's put all future stuff behind spoilers and clearly mark what particular episode you're talking about behind the spoilers. The Comedian
Having gotten through episode 4 of season 2... Chapman really has that 1,000 yard stare down now. She's showing less Piper White and more Piperberg all the time. Vee is one manipulative bitch. Already has Crazy Eyes as her lapdog and turned Tastee on Poussey. I like the contrast of Vee as an evil Mama Bear who's building an army of girls to use them vs. Red as the Mama Bear who cares for her girls but has lost them. Best revelation thusfar is that Morello is just as batshit insane as Crazy Eyes and Pennsatucky, and that Christopher is her stalking victim, not her fiancee. Jamal
Just burned through the whole second season. I thought it really picked up towards the end. Loved some of the new back stories that we got like Rosa, Gloria, Morello, and Sister Ingalls. And the finale was so satisfying on so many levels. Hooks
I swore I wouldn't binge watch. I swore I would savor it and make it last so I would be able to look forward to new episodes and not have to wait for season 3. But here it is Sunday night and I'm done with the new season already. So good. So damn good.
The Comedian
Any Spanish speakers that can give me the details of Gloria's backstory?
Kardo
Miss Rosa's back story was soooo awesome. The whole payoff of the episode was amazing.

Control
Any Spanish speakers that can give me the details of Gloria's backstory? Were the subtitles not working? I actually had that experience with Gus's backstory in Breaking Bad.
rainmakerrtv
There were no subtitles, not in any of the back stories with Spanish dialogue, nor in the one with German dialogue.
Control
Don't remember a backstory with German dialogue, but everything was subtitled on my end. I can summarize Gloria's story when I have a few spare minutes if you like
MonteCarl
If you turn Closed Captioning on, it will put all Spanish (as well as Russian and any other languages spoken) into English subtitles. Gloria's backstory: She ran the convenience store, but ran a scam at the same time buying Food Stamp Cards for half their worth and then selling them. She was in an abusive relationship, but stayed in it because he was always nice to her kids, until he finally did hit one of them. She got ratted out for the Food Stamp cards by a disgruntled customer who was at the beginning of her story. He was upset that a candle he bought from them didn't get him a job like they said it would.
Control
Yeah but, to be clear, I didn't turn closed captioning on. Maybe it's cuz I'm Canadian or something, but they subtitle all languages that ain't English.

offspring515
All my captions of the Spanish and German scenes are in Spanish. My roku has English as the default, my Netflix account has English as the default and my tv has English as the default. Very annoying in episodes where 90% of the flashbacks are in another language. scraylo187
Does anyone else hate Piper's brother as much as I do? The character is way too cartoony and doesn't fit the show. It's like an exec decided that their show about a women's prison needed the snowman from Frozen in it.
Swift
Yeah but, to be clear, I didn't turn closed captioning on. Maybe it's cuz I'm Canadian or something, but they subtitle all languages that ain't English. I haven't had this problem with this show, or 99% of other shows or films on Netflix, but when I watched one of the Fast & Furious movies, none of the Portuguese dialogue was subtitled. To get to the show, I also wanted to say, the women in this show are brave. It's not often you have actresses appearing on screen with no makeup. The opening titles play up that aspect too. Bravo. offspring515
I was going to watch them slowly. Started Monday. 11 episodes in. Damn my poor impulse control.

offspring515
So safe to say this is the best thing Netflix has produced yes? Blows HOC outof the water.
StretchMediatedHypertrophy
I liked the Morello reveal, and the show is watchable enough - but it feels like entertaining crap rather than some groundbreaking show. No matter how 'brave' they are by not centering every minute of the show around Piper or whatever the fuck, the show is filled to the brim with 'good old fashioned family racism", "HLA" and a ton of other bullshit (I mean what purpose does Fig finding out that hubby is gay/bi and later blowing Arputo really serve?) . House of Cards is a way more interesting show.
offspring515
See I have the complete opposite view, HOC is the entertaining crap with really bad writing. To each their own and all that.
StretchMediatedHypertrophy
See I have the complete opposite view, HOC is the entertaining crap with really bad writing. To each their own and all that. I was never much for all that. If you're going to take the opposite view, you at least have to address the points about race stereoypes and lesbo titilation. People act like Orange is 'worthy', but it really isn't; to use another Peter Griffin line, it insists upon itself. Basically it's a USA remake of the Aussie soap Prisoner Cell Block H. House of Cards has patchy writing in places and some political nuances I don't much care for as a leftie, but at least it asks some challenging questions of its audience about what they want of politicians and leaders - it is broadly what it pretends to be. offspring515
Eh you're acting as if HOC isn't guilty of the same things you take issue with in OITNB. Kate Mara is naked every other episode, the hooker chick and her girlfriend were used for titilation numerous times. Plus Freddy's backstory is essentially stereotypical older black guy story 101. Let's not get started on Feng/Fung/Fang or the Native American casino. Sometimes those things, in both shows, stand out in a bad way. I appreciate the female form but if they cut out some of the titillating nudity for season three I would not mind. HOC is not patchy writing, it is mediocre writing spotted with patches of complete nonsense. I say that as someone who likes the show.
StretchMediatedHypertrophy
Eh you're acting as if HOC isn't guilty of the same things you take issue with in OITNB. There's no need for me to act, it really isn't. Kate Mara is naked every other episode I don't recall them showing her naked corpse every second episode of the new season the hooker chick and her girlfriend were used for titilation numerous times. Sort of. But having just rewatched one quickly a comparison to the scenes in Orange seems pretty disingenuous. And at least you have to 'deal' with the Meechum-Underwood kiss, which is more challenging than the gay kiss thrown in by Orange because they hadn't had one yet. Plus Freddy's backstory is essentially stereotypical older black guy story 101. Freddy's arc is lazy, but he's hardly a selling point of the show. Infact they wrote him out. He is tangential. Let's not get started on Feng/Fung/Fang or the Native American casino. Lazy tropes yes, but HOC isn't sold as some breakthrough drama for the way it 'positively' portrays lesbians and blacks. You can come at House of Cards, but at some point you have to defend Orange and it's pretty clear you can't - because you take everything out that's a problem and you have 8 minute episodes.
