Guardians made $11.2 million from Thursday night shows - more than Captain America 2 and Transformers 4 did on their Thursday nights.  Box Office Mojo is saying it's guaranteed to have a $70 million opening weekend, which would be a record for August, and a $100 million weekend is a possibility.

I know that to me it looked pretty weird and as a non comic book guy I had never heard of it before, but I should have remembered that Marvel can do no wrong now. Once I saw that I knew quite a few people who went and watched it already, I realized I screwed up.

I don't know if anything Marvel could be deemed a surprise success, but Guardians of the Galaxy looks to be blowing away almost all expectations. If anyone took a punt on it way up the box office list, that's going to be handy.

GotG was, not shockingly, really front-loaded.  The best Thursday so far this year, 37.8 by the end of Friday, finished the weekend at a very strong 94 million.
