I'm a bit bummed because I am on shift tonight and Holy Flame Of The Martial World comes on this evening in the late block.

I caught some of this last night.  It sure is over-the-top with the dark magic and the constant flying around.  Not sure if I'm going to like this but willing to see the rest.  Then again I'm not fully sold on "wire fu" or whatever they call it.

Shaw Brothers went through a weird point in time where they were trying to compete with Japanese tokusatsu shows like Ultraman and Giant Robo so they resorted to Kung Fu movies loaded with special effects like Holy Flane, The Battle Wizard, The Web of Death, and a few others.

Shaw even put out a legit tokusatsu movie in 1975 called The Super Inframan which is a beloved cult classic.

China Star rekindled the magic fu love with the Zu movies and Golden Harvest followed up in the 90's with The Storm Riders and A Man Called Hero; aboth adopted from  Ma Wing-shing's graphic novels.

I would be remiss if I didn't include John Carpenter's Big Trouble In Little China in that mix.

Local box office for kung fu films went way down after Bruce Lee died - a lot of people came to see the Shaw's traditional style as slow and corny - all the Bruce knockoffs didn't help either.  The bigger budget wuxia films were also an answer to Hollywood blockbusters like Star Wars that were starting to make more of a dent at the box office.

I can only imagine what the line-up for The El Rey Kaiju Christmas marathon will be.

It has dethroned 24 Hours of A Christmas Story as our house's Yuletide tradition.

I go to my parents' house and I tried both Way of the Turkey and Kaiju Christmas, sadly it was a no on both counts.  Thank goodness for DVR though.  Even if I've seen the movie I have to record it anyway for the likes of Dario and now Lo Meng.

Watching Kickboxer 4 last night swore I was going to have a Tong Po nightmare given the make-up/mask he was wearing that made him look like a tanned Muay Thai Michael Myers. Once you saw his eyeballs moving around in the mask you just couldn't look away.

Then I noticed Albert Pyun as director and realized maybe he was suppose to be some alien super fighter for this movie.

Next Saturday is the DEADLY VENGEANCE MARATHON with

Death Wish 2-4

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare

Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday

Freddy vs. Jason

If you don't love Death Wish 3 and Freddy vs. Jason please put me on ignore. Required Bitching: they need to play The Exterminator and its sequel for a DEADLY VENGEANCE MARATHON

When it came out I watched it at least three times in the theater because for me growing up as a kid, it was a total dream match and just ended up being such a blast. Freddy comes off like such a creep in it and the final battle is the best. And you get all the gore gags and titties that both series deserve in a mashup, so it's all win-win to me. I'd advise loosening the mood with a couple beers and watching with friends if you're unsure.

Sucks that there isn't more of Season 3 LU though

True, but I finally got to DVR the Grave Encounters casket match, so I was good with that.

Don't know why I didn't watch more as I was laid up in bed all weekend. The only match I caught was the Cage/Mack brawl. And of course then I fell asleep before Ten Tigers of Kwangtung came on

I had to DVR Ten Tigers.  They scheduled those showings way too early for me.,

Kaiju Xmas is gonna be 4 days and 20 movies. Well damn. Maybe I can finally catch Godzilla vs. Biollante in full, or really hit the jackpot and see The Wrath of Daimajin or Frankenstein Conquers the World!

BTW the Deadly Vengeance Marathon is on right now if you wanna see Charles Bronson fight the drug war (AKA the youth of America) HEAD ON~!

Caught the end of Gator (despite technical difficulties. Get it together El Rey). Has anyone ever mentioned the fact that Gator had the EXACT SAME Empire Strikes Back quote

Quote

"I love you."

"I know."

years prior? I'm not a huge Star Wars nerd but this has got to be a talking point with somebody, surely. And it's kind of nice to have the role reversal, btw, because this is a fucking Burt Reynolds movie

War of the Gargantuas didn't make it back this year but it looks like Godzilla Tokyo SOS took its place.

El Rey still hasn't gotten the licenses for the Daimajin trilogy. I am not even sure if Kadokawa Pictures ever put them up for sale.. :(

I am going to have to remember to DVR Rodan this time around.  It had horrible schedule placement last year too and I missed it every time it came on.

It legit has become my new Christmas tradition to watch a bunch of this over Christmas weekend.  And this year the party's two doors down from me, so when everything is done we'll be coming back seeing even more.  Great, great times indeed.
