Kevin Wilson
What was the first triple threat match in WWF/WCW? How long after Sabu-Funk-Douglas did it happen? Pretty sure the first WWF one was Goldust vs. Owen Hart vs. HHH on 6/23/97. So three years or so I reckon after the Night the Line Was Crossed. Tromatagon
I think the first one in WCW was Vader vs Sting vs Guardian Angel but it was the weird triangle match rules

I remember the WWF promoting a triple threat match during Roddy Piper's time as 'President' on the house show circuit... so 1996? Not sure if that counts though since they weren't televised. Cobra Commander
did WCW have a more conventional triangle match between that and Sting/Luger/Flair? and i'm guessing Starrcade 95 took place during a period where Hogan just decided to take off-time. I'm guessing Hogan wouldn't have faced Savage at Starrcade unless Hulk was going over.

The first advertised triple threat matches were dark matches at TV tapings in Feb 1996 with Bret Hart vs. Undertaker vs. Diesel. Diesel would no-show, the match would become a straight-up singles, then Diesel would attack Taker at the end.
Newb82
Starrcade '95 was essentially a mini-tournament with two separate singles matches instead of a triple threat.

Had no idea that's what actually happened during the match. Nice tidbit.
ARMDRAGON
One thing I never understood was Capt. Lou's rubber bands. Was his cheek pierced? And was there a reason/story for wearing them besides his own style?
Territorial
One thing I never understood was Capt. Lou's rubber bands. Was his cheek pierced? And was there a reason/story for wearing them besides his own style? Yes, his cheek was pierced. I've never heard of a backstory for the rubber bands. Albano has mostly said he did it just to be different. I've heard that he had a fetish for both piercings and rubber bands, so maybe that explains it. Thomas Bugg
Okay, I'm gonna derail the current direction of this thread because I doubt a majority of us wants to hear about Captain Lou's junk (not that half of you degenerates don't watch porn!). Anyway, I'm reading the review of the King Of The Ring PPV from 1994 where they mention Ray Apollo, the guy who replaced Matt Borne as Doink. What was Ray Apollo like as a worker or on the mic? He apparently teamed with Ted Petty at Starrcade 90' against the Steiners. Phone wont let me post it. That's alliI could really find of his pre-Doink work, which as we all know, was garbage. PetrolCB
Were there any major plans set up for Steamboat as IC champion, or was it just the standard "feud with former champion" on a bunch of house shows?

What was Ray Apollo like as a worker or on the mic? I haven't watched any of his stuff in years, but Apollo was pretty much universally shit on when compared to his predecessor. I can't imagine he was able to do anything with the terrible face Doink promos.
RandomAct
I watched a match from late 94 between Doink and Backlund, and I thought it was damn awesome. I'm not sure if that was Ray Apollo or Steve Keirn under the mask at that point. I loved the match though, because Backlund looked like a killer. I'm not sure why things went off the rails for Bob, because if THAT guy showed up every night, he would have been my champ until the Stone Cold era. Hagan
True, but once Hulkamania started running wild no on had a chance to supplant him. For all the talk about guys who, conceivably, could have been the top guy, Hogan was a better choice than them. Piper was a little too edgy for a mainstream face, JYD was starting to lose his motivation, Savage, maybe, but Hogan connected with that kid audience in such a way. Shane
Anyone have info on "Mid South Championship Wrestling?" Not Watts' company. This looks like it was maybe early/mid 90s. There's a few shows on YouTube and I've never even heard of it before today. Cactus Jack on commentary on the first match (and Mark Cutis as ref) and the main is advertised as R'nR vs Gangstas. They also mention Abby and Tracey Smothers and Budro is with the commentary team during the show open...
Ryan
Looks like it was ran by someone named Jon Horton from 1993-1997. I think he was a Global Announcer.
Territorial
Yeah, Jon Horton was a play-by-play guy for Global and USWA (using the name Craig Johnson). Was the Mid South he's asking about run out of Lousiana? I'm drawing a blank. I vaguely remember a promotion calling itself Mid-South run from LA. The booker was John Horton, but he wasn't the promoter. Not even sure John Horton and Jon Horton were the same guy. Time frame is rightish, though. FYI: Jon Horton got out of the wrestling biz and has a job in Hollywood. Last I heard, he was shopping around a sitcom (don't think it ever got made, though). Thomas Bugg
Just thought of a question as I watch the Elimination Chamber match from 2003. Back in 2001 when the WWF purchased WCW, was everyone instructed to call it the WCW Championship and not the WCW WORLD Championship? Seems like a dickhead move by Vince to me and it devalues the title. Not that shitty booking didn't already devalue it but still.
