The Old School Questions thread

Okay, this is an odd one and it is more about this site than the match itself.

I recall reading on this site ages ago, possibly in one of the actual DVDVRs, someone breaking down an early 90s Freebirds with Badstreet 6 person tag in depth.  What I recall was them discussing the early part of the match where that even though the Freebirds had virtually no offense they were in control as they controlled the pace and never let the faces string any sort of offense together.

Does anyone else recall this, and if so is it still up here anywhere?  I wanted to show it to someone.

I think the match is from Bash 91.  Dustin and The Young Pistols against the Birds.  I remember reading that too.

May have been on a Dustin of the Day write-up.

Thank you, that was enough info for me to track down a salvaged version of the write-up Phil put up on prowrestlingonly a few years back.  If anyone else wanted to read it, faulty formatting and all.

I was listening to one of Pritchard's podcasts and he mentioned how much Vince loved the Johnny B Badd character in the early 90s and how he said he could make a ton of money with him.

Obviously Wild Man Marc Mero got a decent push when he came in, do you think that push would've continued if Mero hadn't had to go for knee surgery and change his whole style/gimmick?

I think Sable was always gonna outshine him just because of the way the business was going

From all accounts, "Wildman" Marc Mero was set for a huge push. He was one of the first, if not THE first, guaranteed contracts Vince ever put together for anybody. It was a huge point Mick Foley made several times in pretty much every one of his books when talking about when he signed with them, as he was told they didn't do guaranteed contracts, and then the next guy they sign - Marc Mero - gets a big figure guaranteed contract. And I believe Austin has also mentioned about how he would see a ton merch in the works for guys like Mero and Mark Henry, but none for him. So, yeah, I think Mero's knee injury cost him millions of dollars and a push to the top of the company.

So assuming Mero stayed healthy and never needed the surgery, what kind of ceiling does he have?

2, maybe 3 time IC champion. His last reign gets ended by the newly arrived Y2J.

Yeah, that's kinda what I meant with the way the business was going - any potential push to superstardom would've been potentially outshined by the rise of Sable. Plus it was almost like he was presented as a bit of a choker before his injury as he kept losing IC title matches culminating in a 'last ever shot' match... which he lost IIRC

When "Wildman " Marc Mero debuted, Sable was escorting Hunter Hearst Helmsley to the ring and giving Jerry Lawler heart palpitations. Nobody knew who she was, and we all figured she was a forgotten playboy playmate they dragged up like Shae Marks.

Wildman was given the flashy sequin, the eye candy, and the unpredictable attitude of Savage. He just lacked that edge.... and then he blew his knee out and became a boxer.

I was a big Johnny B Badd fan. He had a lot of promise coming into the WWE, but he came in, then got injured at the same time that Austin began his rise.

Big Show complains on one of Austin's podcasts about Mero making more than him in WCW when Show was main eventing. Everyone hates that he made money for whatever reason.

The Giant didn't make his in ring debut before Mero left for the WWF, IIRC.

I wonder how much of the Mero hate stems from his salary, or if he was just an insufferable prick to everybody.

I've never heard that he was a jerk.  To me, it's always seemed like some people were jealous of his salary.

People were probably jealous he was banging Sable who was a hot piece, and that he wouldn't share her like DDP and Bischoff would their wives.  .

In fairness, the only reason I knew Marc Mero wasn't popular was that Mick Foley used the Mean Street Posse as a code word for Mero in his books.  And Foley wrote that while married to a woman so attractive, WCW refused to put her camera thinking that nobody would believe that was his actual wife.  Pretty sure the Mero hatred escalated from the Foley books.
