The Old School Questions thread

Hopefully because we all know....

Even in Apter's book, he kinda comes off as if "Jesus Christ you guys, how many times do I have to tell you that Shocket and Ellner were/are real?"

Though I didn't know until reading his book that Dan Shocket also wrote for porno mags.

I always loved how Ellner made up nicknames for guys he hated. Andre the Giant Idiot and Barry the Pandering Twit Windham.

So I've been reading the History Of The WWE Championship book, and they covered Slaughter's title run. Did the WWF really get that serious of a security threat that they had to move WM7 from the LA Coliseum to the LA Sports Arena? Seems to me that Wrestlemania was/is so big that they could've ran at the Great Western Forum if they really wanted to move the event indoors, assuming WCW didn't have the building on lock.

They moved it because they only sold 15,000 tickets and even with the move I don't think the show sold out.

The Sports Arena is next door to the Coliseum and it was the arena the WWF used for LA shows.

Yeah, WWF couldn't even sell out the Sports Arena.  The building holds about 16,500, and they sold 15,500, though I think they announced it as a sell-out or gave some number to imply that they did.

And it ended up being a very good show, just nobody wanted to see Hogan/Slaughter.  Especially considering the war had been over for a month by the time the show happened.

Is there any Pro Wrestling USA footage that is specifically worth tracking down? Been watching the TV shows posted on DM and it's worth it for the Jerry Blackwell and Road Warriors matches I haven't seen, but none of it has blown me away so far.

Best match I've seen so far was probably Rick Martel vs Jimmy Garvin.

How did Dan Spivey turn heel in the WWF in 1987? Never seen any of his matches as a heel from that period, but I know he was one as he's in the heel group in the "If you only knew" music video. Did they just keep him off TV for a while after Rotundo left, and re-introduce him as a heel character, or did he actually do something to turn?

I only recall one TV match with Spivey immediately after Rotunda went to the Florida territory -- an SNME match where he and Tito Santana took on the Hart Foundation for the WWF Tag Team titles.  Jesse Ventura referred to Spivey/Santana as a "new team looking to make a name for themselves", but that's the last they teamed on TV.  IIRC, Spivey was wearing his "U.S. Express" tights for said match.

A few months later, Spivey appeared on Prime Time Wrestling as a heel, with the explanation from the announcers that he had a "new attitude" and was now "taking shortcuts".

That was a pretty basic squash...not very offensive except for Spivey's missed dropkick and the botched leapfrog. Bellomo as a heel "Italian Stallion" comedy jobber is way more entertaining than the goober face he normally was portrayed as.

Looking at his '87 results, in March Spivey and Jerry Allen are a regular JTTS team.  Then he disappears until September, when he's back (seemingly as a face) beating the likes of Danny Davis and Steve Lombardi.  Then all of a sudden come October he's beating the babyface jobbers like SD Jones and Lanny Poffo.
