Matt D
Look, am I the only one that sees Lorde and Iggy Azalea in some sort of spiritual battle for the souls of the youth of America?
Burgundy LaRue
Shouldn't that be Australia/New Zealand, since that's where they come from?
Matt D
Yeah, um, ... look can someone else make the "Descendents of prisoners don't have souls" joke, because I'm already pushing it with the Devitt stuff.
Burgundy LaRue
I was just ragging on you. For the record, Iggy will be the female Pitbull. Her presence will be legion. And the quasi-drawl she raps in is oddly catchy.
Matt D
Everyone else gets that cuddly claptrap and I get ragged on. There's no justice. Anyway, the fact they're from the same geographic area just makes it better. Fancy seems almost exactly like the sort of song that Royals was written about. Burgundy LaRue
I rag because I care. It's neat to compare the two because they represent social cliques so well. Iggy is the head diva in high school, wearing the latest stilettos and driving a Mercedes convertible while Lorde is hanging out with the Interpretative Dance crowd, quoting Rimbaud and pushing a 3-speed bike. MORELOCK
I read that as "heel diva" for some reason, possibly because Iggy's recent (and spot on) remarks about Lorde having no business being a part of the Nirvana Rock and Roll Hall of Fame deal. StretchMediatedHypertrophy
Just because. Pop historians note that this is when Victoria Beckham dropped the no-smiling gimmick.
StretchMediatedHypertrophy
Wasn't expecting it, but I've found myself digging the last couple of Little Miz tunes......
Sky Blue Sam
One of my best friends runs a small indie label, and last month they put out their hundredth release. Not sure how he got in touch with them, but this 15yr anniversary remaster was said release
Lazlo Woodbine
I heard that on the radio the other day for the first time in years, awesome tune.
RIPPA
Wasn't expecting it, but I've found myself digging the last couple of Little Miz tunes...... One of these days I really need to write about the night that in the span of a hour I went from never hearing Little Mix to being obsessed with them

StretchMediatedHypertrophy
This took me in the gym this evening. Chorus is massive, but I like what they do around it too.

stiffshots
I really really wanted to hate this. However: The song's not terrible. The video's amusing. MARK FUCKING ROMANEK DIRECTED IT. You win, Tay.
Burgundy LaRue
And the full pop transformation for Taylor is complete. I actually like the song. It's a definite earworm. Some are complaining about the twerking women of color in the video, but Taylor plays it a lot smarter than Miley. Taylor isn't setting herself up as some cool white chick worthy of a honorary black pass. The video also shows WoC dancing in other mediums that are certainly more positive. Taylor intergrates herself into the video and while she's the focus, she doesn't feel like she's above the others. There's nothing tongue in cheek about it. And she spends so much time goofing on herself, and actually tries to shake her slender behind a few times, even wearing the same twerking outfit as her dancers. It's clearly a parody. Thing is--Taylor is going to make tons more money making fun of Miley, Gwen Stefani, and the new pop wannabes than they do combined.
RIPPA
I'm gonna laugh when she is nominated for another CMA award EDIT - Oh and for the record, Swift herself has said that this album is a Pop album
Matt D
It's bugging the hell out of me. What 80s video is the whole band in black against a white backdrop supposed to be a take off of. Some band with a female lead.

stiffshots
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSOQ7uRrC_c The singer (and the song) may be generic Euro technopop, but pay attention to the blonde dancer immediately to Sahandra's left. Maybe you remember, about a year ago, a Finnish break dancer who gave the nerdosphere a collective boner by performing in a dance battle as Sailor Moon. Same lady, and she also choreographed the dance moves here. Should you need a refresher of said Sailor Mooning:
Burgundy LaRue
The song is a year old, but it's new to me and Charli XCX has hit it big in the US this summer. So. . .

StretchMediatedHypertrophy
Pretty sure I linked that BABYMETAL tune some time ago. Anyway, this is probably the most overlooked pop classic of the last 20 years. I am amazed noone has recovered it (original version by Glenn Jones)
