Curt McGirt Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 So there were ten (10!!!) tornadoes that hit Chicago. Yes, Chicago. Pssssh, global warming. Those scientists don't know a hoot, amirite? 1
odessasteps Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 Storm takes down tree across the street. tree lans on power line, pulls down pole, which rips off electric meter from our house. awhile I’m on vacation
Death From Above Posted July 20, 2024 Posted July 20, 2024 Not only are we setting heat records daily, but now a bunch of smoke from forest fires has rolled in for an air quality warning as well. It's actually impossible to be outside right now and it's not much better inside either. Fuckin' miserable right now. 1
Tabe Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 Spokane just tired its record for most consecutive days of 90+ at 16. Sunday is supposed to be 106. 1
JLSigman Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 Hurricane (not so Little) Debbie is making my life interesting this week, considering the hole in my roof can't get fixed properly until it's, you know, not raining. *grumbling*
odessasteps Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 Will hopefully have my electric back this week. Currently on week 3 in the hotel. 2

Which is also the same day... Well I'm sure you can figure out the rest.

My roof also needs to be fixed, and it's also supposed to rain all week. Oof. 1

Good to know. You may worry about the rain, but at least it's not going to be brutally hot while you're here. It's been bad enough that I can barely sleep most nights. I'm looking forward to temps in the 70s for once. 2

I'm without a car right now so I've been walking to work and have to catch the bus for AA meetings. It's brutal. I get to work around 5 am some days and it already is like walking into a sweatbox when I walk out the door.
S.K.o.S. Posted August 10, 2024 Posted August 10, 2024 You guys weren't kidding. I stepped out of the airport and felt like I was getting slapped in the face with the humidity. It doesn't seem like the rain helped all that much either.
odessasteps Posted August 10, 2024 Posted August 10, 2024 In better news, finally got power back today. Waited 2 days for 6 hours waiting for the power company. Apparently came this morning. 3
JLSigman Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 Yet another hurricane is about to form in no time flat out in the Gulf of Mexico and smash through the neighborhood http://apnews.com/article/caribbean-us-tropical-storm-hurricane-helene-a1582935d0b9002bc8993b483c203206
Dolfan in NYC Posted September 27, 2024 Author Posted September 27, 2024 And Helene continues to fuck shit up where people never expected it ever to be a problem
Contentious C Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 Power around here has been really hit and miss, because SC is too cheap and stupid to bury its power lines ("high water table" is a lazy excuse to avoid the work). Maybe she's still among those without. 1

nate Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 (edited) Fuck Hulk Helene. My hodunk podunk ass SC town is packed full of fucking CHUDs. Helene hit late Thursday night and pretty much decimated a lot of neighborhoods. Houses gone, vehicles destroyed ... gas lines many hours long, only to get to the pumps and find out you're too late. Me and my 16yo daughter have been stuck in the dark since Thursday night. Linemen have been working on restoring power, but there is no rhyme or reason to it. The restaurant that is literally right across the street from my house has power, but we're still in the dark. The tree in the front yard fell over, so I've been hacking limbs with a bow saw out of spite and boredom. My hometown of Newport TN was pretty much washed out. A dam broke so the Pigeon River swamped downtown. It's the fuckin Purge. Edited September 30, 2024 by nate Forgot to add, w/r/t the gas: I got to see some assholes trying to fill up trash bags with unleaded, only to watch the bags burst in their truck bed as they left the gas station. That's gas I could have used, you goddamn sons of bitches. 2
AxB Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 Do they not have the rule about only authorising the pump if the fuel is being dispensed into a vehicle or an official approved petrol can over there? Because that rule exists for a reason. Besides which, Unleaded fuel is a solvent. It dissolves plastic. That's why you can't store it in regular drinks bottles. This is supposed to be universal knowledge. You'd have to be a fucking idiot to try to put fuel in a bag, and if you're working in the gas station and see someone trying to put fuel in a bag (or indeed, put fuel in a contained you can't see), you should turn the pump off. Do they not teach basic fuel safety to people who sell fuel over there?
odessasteps Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 I know Beau has been tweeting a bunch of links for donations for folks in eastern TN and western NC.
HumanChessgame Posted October 6, 2024 Posted October 6, 2024 This time of year I'd normally be preparing for a couple of mountain trips but that's all come to a halt over the past week. Hearing about disasters on the news is one thing, but when it's a place you have a deep affection for and are able to see places you've walked or driven through in ruins it hits a lot harder. I used the money I was going to spend on some new camping gear and dropped off a few loads of supplies to one of my favorite bars that's distributing aid out of their Asheville brewery. It's going to be an uphill battle in that area for a long time to come. 1
Dolfan in NYC Posted October 7, 2024 Author Posted October 7, 2024 A cat five hurricane is probably about to wipe Tampa and St Pete off the face of the earth, and then there's this: but some people will still say climate change isn't real. 2

Thinking about everybody in those places. My two cousins, one who is a lesbian expecting her first child with her partner all live in Denmark. First I've heard about it in Denmark. Fuck.
Dolfan in NYC Posted October 8, 2024 Author Posted October 8, 2024 For the record.... If you are in Central Florida, or worse, in the Tampa Bay area. Get out now. Hurricane Milton has the potential to be the worst storm EVER to make landfall. It's currently sitting at 180MPH sustained winds with gusts well over 200. I have NEVER in my time as a hurricane nerd seen the phrase "this storm is reaching the upper limits of mathematical possibilities." If it tracks just slightly north of where it currently is, Tampa will be underwater in 48 hours. And I'm not being glib about that. It will be underwater. GET OUT NOW. Stay safe. We'll hopefully be here when you get back. 1 1
