Karl Logan, guitarist from Manowar, got busted for child pornography.

I'm not surprised. Have you ever seen that dude's haircut?

It must be rough being a pedophile when your band's fan base is anywhere from 35-60 years old.

Maybe he can start a band with Gary Glitter, Tripp Eisen (Dope, Static-X), and Ian Watkins (Lost Prophets).

Thankfully all the good Manowar stuff (and it isn't just good, it's GREAT) is confined to the first four albums where Ross the Boss from the fucking Dictators was on guitar. All the stuff with creepbag on it can stay safely buried and forgotten. At the same time you are still gonna get a fistful of macho horseshit with those so caveat emptor.

Never trust a man with a mustache like Buck Zumhofe's

Great. In other shitty metal news, Mark Adams, bassist for doom gods Saint Vitus, has Parkinson's. He's got a Gofundme page up if you want to contribute.

Horrible news, horrible disease.

I wish him well.

If I can get some overtime in the coming weeks I'll try to shoot him a few hours worth.

What a great band they continue to be after all the lineup changes through the years.

I caught them a couple years back with The Skull (ex-Trouble) at a dive bar in Indianapolis -- Reagers on vocals as they'd just given Wino the toss (again). To say they were amazing is an understatement.

It also shocked me that they found a drummer that not only sounded like but LOOKED just like Armando Acosta (RIP)

In a pretty fucking awful low-blow, this will be the last album to feature the drumming of a real sweetheart of a guy, Dave "Scarface" Castillo, also of October 31. He drowned in his home country of El Salvador visiting family just a few days ago. RIP brother.

It's a habit of mine to keep a google doc of metal albums I really like during a given year, with a several-words summary so I don't forget what it is. (It's usually second-wave-ish black metal, and this year isn't different.) So, for no real reason, here is that list for 2018, Album-Artist, in no order, subject to change, and poorly described:

Netherstorm-Vargrav (Anthems Emperor worship, heavy use of synths and soundscapes; sketchy politics)

Northern Chaos Gods-Immortal (a return to form album that actually is)

Conqueror's Oath-Visigoth (best fully corny trad heavy metal of the year, for when the mood strikes)

White Horse Hill-Solstice (best epic doom album of the year)

Wolftooth-Wolftooth (The Sword esque heavy rock, big riffs and earnest ballads about swords and such)

Jord-Panphage (folky black metal; harsher Windir)

Black Fuck You Metal-Svpremacist (shredding retro black thrash)

Mysterium Tremendum-Nahtrunar (skin peeling, melodic atmospheric black)

The Age of Men is Over-Feminazgul (dissonant, strangled bm vocals, over blast beats and synth pop?)

Sorg-Afsky (DSBM that isn’t boring and tedious, genuinely tortured vocals and beautiful melodies)

Riitti-Paara (just very, very bouncy, folky black metal, w/ some great cleans)

Stormriding Power-Venomwolf (thrash burnt to an evil, black crisp; d-beat Darkthrone)

Vermilia-Kätkyt (it’s not fair to call this Finnish Myrkur, only way better… but it’s not exactly wrong)

The Unraveling-Ails (dueling cleans/harsh make for a blackened post hardcore type thing)

Nostalgia-Coldworld (super on-the-head 90s bm from the dsbm mainstay, but fuck does it go)

Death is Peace-Void Ritual (peak second second wave black metal by someone who knows it, loves it)

It’s Hard to Have Hope-Svalbard (I was a teen once and this kind of melodic hardcore is still fun as hell)

Voluptuous Worship of Rapture and Response-Rebel Wizard (blackened heavy metal, whatever, so-called heavy negative wizard metal is the only genre that matters)

Night Shines Eternal-Peste Umbrarum (vampyric! bm recorded in a tin can)

Disciples of the Void-Disciples of the Void (well, it’s more second wave worshiping bm, soaring synths and snarling vocals, but that Hammerheart cover at the end is really unique)

Alien Weaponry is a band of New Zealand teenagers with Maori heritage who mix thrash and groove metal with lyrics in English and te reo, the Maori language. I listened to three of their songs on YouTube and bought their album, Tū.

My favorite song of theirs is Raupatu but the video for Kai Tangata is too damn good not to share. Hit the captions button for an English translation of Raupatu. The translation for Kai Tangata isn't in the video but somebody helpfully posted it in the comments section on YouTube.

Evoke just came in the mail in a beautiful gatefold 2LP with side 4 being a screenprint (or maybe it's an etching, too lazy to get up and look) of the cover. Enormous poster too. Sabbat's Disembody is next on the chopping block. Personally I'm waiting for Karisma more than any of them.

And of course because this showed up at Hell's Headbangers I had to pick it up, despite the Svart Records overprice (hey, they always get the job done right at least)

Sucks that this didn't repress doesn't include their second demo, which next to Grave's Anatomia Corporis Humani demo is quite literally the heaviest piece of death metal EVER.

Guest The Magnificent 7

Stuff I’ve been listening to and enjoyed (please keep in mind I took a bit of a hiatus from seeking out recent metal some time back as I think I needed to recharge the ear batteries - heart grows fonder and all that, but now my appetite for new good metal is insatiable at the moment).

Revocation - The Outer Ones

Good technical speed stuff think Psycroptic style.  I have a major soft spot for bands, album covers, and songs about alien shit or multi-dimensional beings and monster stuff so this was right up my alley.

Psycroptic - As the Kingdom Drowns

Best song is Momentum of the Void.  I tend to listen to this style of metal in shorter doses and will listen to an album not in one sitting. The Nile effect is what I call it. Still, great stuff.

YOB - Our Raw Heart

I never would have sought out a band like this if it weren’t for this board recommending a past album. Perfect mellower metal for that Psycroptic style break you need. Best song Beauty Falling in Leaves.

The Crown - Cobra Speed Venom

Back in the day before internets and streaming when you had to buy shit in order to even figure out if it was good or not, you and I would have bought this no questions asked because of that title and album artwork. Their best since Possessed 13 imo. Best song Where My Grave Shall Stand or title track.

Hate Eternal - Upon Desolate Sands

For Whom We have Lost is the super heavy double bass breathing instrumental track you need to kick off your workout.

Primordial - Exile Amongst the Ruins

Best band does best band things. You need it.

Monstrosity - The Passage of Existence

Hey, long time no release. Missed these guys and it’s good. Best song Cosmic Pandemia. Another band with song titles and lyrics dealing with voids, abysses, and solar vacuums. So an aditional star gets added.

Skeletonwitch - Devouring Radiant Light

Enjoyed this one a whole lot. Fen of Shadows best song.

Bandcamp doesn't say, but Christian Sloan Hall got the art credit in the announcement.

Sometimes I wish I didn't immediately love every uber-corny second-wave worshiping black metal release, but I do, so I love this. Vargrav satisfied that itch last year, so I'm glad 2019 has it covered.

Can anyone recommend some worthwhile listens from 2018?

I did start to give a selection of bands I was into, but it ranges across a lot of different metal genres, so happy to hear what people recommend.

All that stuff I listed is from 2018, dawg.

Also this week I have been listening to and enjoying...

Blood of the Wolf - Album 1 & 2

Scorched - Ecliptic Butchery

Our Place of Worship is Silence - With Inexorable Suffering
