I think Hannibal was deluding himself if he thought the "Psycho Family" thing was going to work.

First of all, he's a homicidal maniac. And he's shown no signs of stopping being one. So, what, Will and Abigail will be chilling by the beach while Hannibal goes around killing people? Or he gets Will and Abigail to help him murder people?

Yeah, as far gone as Will is morally, even he was never going to go for that. Not convinced he was going to forget about Beverly or what happened to her so easily either.

Re: Bedelia - Fuller addressed the situation in the last walk-through on The AV Club:

For me it was an interesting way to have this woman—who I would argue is the most intelligent person on the show—and she was the one who figured things out without the overwhelming evidence that Will Graham had. She was smart enough to get the hell out of Dodge, and then got scooped up by Jack Crawford later on, and when she’s telling him that Hannibal is in control of this situation, I think what is happening there is she really is actually embracing her awe of this man, who is unlike any other that she’s encountered as a specialist in the psychology of humankind.

That is part of her role in season three is what does she expect to be getting out of this situation that continues to keep her intelligent and not just a dummy that is going along with the sexy, serial killer for reasons that are carnal. That’s not what we want. This is an opportunity, actually, for her to study something so wholly unique in the lexicon of humanity out in the wild. Out in its natural environment. So I think those first episodes of season three will go a long way in rationalizing and explaining exactly what Bedelia wants and expects out of the situation and how she’s going to continue to be as smart, if not smarter, than Hannibal Lecter.

What about Hannibal and Alana though?  Hannibal seemed like he wanted her to join his psychopath family as well.  I mean the two were like making out in episode 11.

Fun blog by the show's food stylist about how they construct all the fancy pants gourmet dishes Hannibal makes for TV and make parts of them edible for the cast.  The illegal roasted songbird dish was made out of like hollowed marzipan.

Season 3 Nuggets from the SDCC panel:

-Next season begins 1 year after the finale.

-The episode titles will be Italian.

-Francis Dollarhyde will pop up midway through, similar to the Vergers last season.

-It's official that Chilton is alive, but I feel like Fuller wasn't even trying to keep that a secret.

I assume Molly Graham is going to show up too. Timing is right.

I think Alana probably is dead (her storyline arc is essentially over) and it makes sense than Will meets a new woman who helps him move on from her.

Finally broke down and bought season 2 instead of waiting for it to show up on Amazon Prime.

Just to the point where they find

Miriam Lass

But I just wanted to pop in and say one of the most impressive things is how much of a lovably droll ghoul they've managed to make this version of Frederick Chilton.  Abel Gideon was a bit clumsily affected but Frederick is fantastic.

Far from the cartoonish villain in the book and movies.  He's funny, smart, self-aware.  He's like that little parasite that feeds off of the bigger predators while hoping not to get eaten himself.  But the best part is, is that he harbors no illusions that he is anything but that.  He knows himself, and has a pretty good read on everyone else.  And he manages to be just gothic enough, like in a Miskatonic Univsersity kind of a way while still seeming like a recognizably human character...just on the borderline between believable and camp.

Richard Armitage has been cast as the Tooth Fairy.

It's killing me that they haven't announced a return date yet. At this point, I'm guessing we don't see the new season until summer.

Speaking of, a few slight spoilers have emerged regarding the structure of the new season. Nothing major, but will box it up in case.

Episode 7 is called "Digestivo." Episode 8 will jump ahead in time to roughly 4 years later, and Will will already be married to Molly. So...First 7 episodes are their spin on Hannibal, last 5 are Red Dragon. And then it probably gets canceled.

Actually, due to the way the show is set up, that's not too likely.

The funding comes from overseas. NBC essentially syndicate it and they keep showing it because, well, what else to they have?

Also, I read the licensing fees keep going down every year due to streaming deals and whatnot, so really, there's no real reason for them to not to keep it around.

Oh, I'm well aware of how the money works on this show. But eventually these channels reach a certain point where, no matter how favorable the financial situation is, they feel they have to cut bait and use that timeslot on something else that at least has a chance to generate some ratings. And considering they appear to be jettisoning this season to the summer, I'm just guessing that time is now.

Aaaaand NBC confirmed at press tour this morning that the show won't be back until summer.

I can't believe we're going to have to wait a whole damn calendar year to resolve that incredible season 2 cliffhanger. That's cruel and unusual.

Weren't Crossbones and Dracula funded essentially the same way (lot of the money put up by overseas investors, NBC essentially a syndicator)?  Even if they weren't, I'm fairly sure a couple shows have been funded in this manner.  Nothing that made it past one season.

I'm not convinced that a season 4 of Hannibal won't air somewhere, but I'm skeptical it will be on NBC.

NBC Universal has a deal with Comcast and they have an extensive list of affiliate networks.

They could always put Hannibal on Chiller, Syfy, USA, or Esquire.  That would at least give me a reason to watch Esquire.

Finally finished season 2 tonight.  Apart from the teaser after the credits which was a little goofy, I can't imagine a more perfect ending for any series.  I almost regret that there will even be more.  The story could be complete and utterly devastating as it stands.  A total philosophical statement on nature and destructiveness.

It was just, like, hell.  What else should we have expected to happen other than

Hannibal killing every single other person who ever existed and walking away.

It should have always been the odds-on most likely scenario from episode 1.

But of all the callbacks the one I liked the most was the most subtle, the idea that we almost never really see the real Hannibal.  When he allows someone the gift to "see me...what I really am."  It is never what we think or what they thought it was going to be.

I've gotten to read through the thread finally, and I'm kind still conflicted over the idea that Hannibal ever planned a family with Will and Abigail and not just another experiment.  I'm kind of partial to the idea that he had no plan to do anything other than set things in motion and observe.

In season one, at the end he allows Abigail to see him and she sees suddenly and to her horror that there was no connection between them, no paternal instinct, no poetic philosophy was driving him.  It was simple and cold curiosity.  Utterly cruel and without any attachment.  We, and she, had been fooled into thinking he was developing some bond with her.  But we see in the moment of death the total void inside him.

Then at the end of season 2, after an even deeper bond seems to be forged between Hannibal and Will, when we, and he, believe we have learned something about what is driving him...a need for connection.  Progeny.  An "imago."  He gives will the gift to "see me."  Will, after all that, and like Abigail, had no idea, though.  He had been lulled like us into some complicated theory of Hannibal's familial drive.  But when he lets us see him, it is the exact same empty biological calculation.  Simple desire to survive and thrive while satisfying one's curiosity.  The most basic breakdown of what human consciousness is when stripped bare.  Empty. Blank. Perfect void.

What is so great about it is how they save that in both cases for the final scenes of the season finales.  No matter how much slicing, and basting, and broiling, and eviscerating Hannibal does.  We only ever really see the full real portrait of his true face for a two brief moments.  One at the end of each season.  Hannibal's true face is "a special attraction."  We only get it once a year.  And it is always harrowing and always fatal.

I'm probably wrong.  But I kind of prefer that to a Hannibal seeking to rectify a family trauma.

IMO, Hannibal murdering the two FBI agents was the real turning point for his character. Even in the movies, he was always some cool anti-hero and took out people worse than himself. There though, he simply butchered two people to strengthen an already strong case against Chilton.

Murdering that teenage girl (Abigail's friend) for the heinous crime of...snapping and telling her mom to stop "being a bitch" was horrible too. Even the most minor of infractions is deserving of death, I guess.

It was easy to root for movie Hannibal when his crimes were abstract. When you see them up close though, it's like, yeah, you're a monster. Maybe a deep monster with manners and class, but still, a monster..

http://tvline.com/2014/12/19/hannibal-season-3-michael-pitt-leaving-joe-anderson-recast-mason/

Pitt has quit as Mason Verger and Joe Anderson has been cast instead.

Bummer.

I just got around to watching season two, and boy I am so sad about this.

*burp* "I am full of myself!" :)

I got through everything except that. That one made me legitimately queasy.

Pitt was so amazing as Mason Verger. Best thing about that character was that you know even The Joker would be like "You're a sick fuck!"

Him not even getting nominated for an emmy for that is why I don't take the emmys seriously.
