Podcast Potpourri (aka Not Austin, AOW, Talk Is Jericho....)

So, a non-fan friend of mine who is podcast obsessed asked me if there is a good wrestling podcast he should listen to. He isn't a fan, zero product knowledge, but also doesn't hate the idea of liking wrestling?

Suggestions? My first thought was Colt, since my buddy is a Nerdist/Maron cast fan and Colt uses the same formula, but it might be a little too inside baseball.

We Watch Wrestlimg probably. It'll give him some highlights from all eras of wrestling to then look up.

I hated Taz as a wrestler. I'm not particularly impressed with him as an announcer. I really dig his podcast, though. I have no idea why, but I just really seem to dig his opinions and insights in this forum when I've never found him particularly interesting at any other time.

I think you could always try to give them a sampler of some stuff.  If you're giving them Colt, I'd go with something like the first Luke Gallows, MVP  (the whole story of the casino heist is facinating) or the Compton Nigeria story.  I enjoy We Watch Wrestling and at first I wasn't sure it was a good pick because a lot of it is current stuff, but since Tom Sibley is a newbie to it in the early eps, maybe it will be something that can relate to.  Jericho would be good especially since there's some diversity to his guests.  I'm sure something like Austin's Macho Mani Pedi would be a good one too.

Asked for podcast suggestions on Twitter and had a couple of people chime in with Solomonster Sounds Off. Audio quality is good enough but after getting the gross Internet Tough Guy / Wrestling Forum Prick vibe from him, I just stopped listening.

Anybody know why he's got such a huge following? Former WWE writer??

Man, Mike Tenay is reminding me why he is my all time favorite wrestling telecaster.

This podcast I posted is cool man. They are basically doing a fantasy draft of current wrestlers and all time wrestlers.

EP7: HPM Fantasy Edition 2 - TOP 10 Wrestlers of All Time! Taz once again welcomes his longtime colleague and friend, Professor Vegas Mike Tenay as they draft their Top 10 wrestlers of All Time in the second installment of the Human Podcast Machine Fantasy Draft Edition.

Oh god the Compton episode is absolute gold, and this is coming from someone who is not a fan of Colt's

I'm listening to Piper interviewing Colt Cabana, and... is that really Colt Cabana?  He's phoning or skyping in which doesn't help the sound quality, but it just doesn't sound like him. Did Piper get Catfished here?

Still listening.  Still doesn't sound like Colt's voice.  Hello?  Am I alone here?

EDIT: and when I try to post the link, THAT happens.

Apparently Flair is getting a podcast.

I have trouble envisioning that being good.

Yeah...there is no way that will be anything but horrible.  I love Ric Flair the wrestler but Ric Flair the man is hard to listen to.  I imagine half the show will be him insulting his guest, telling them "you overstayed your welcome", and talking up his own career.  The second half will be when he becomes an emotional wreck talking about his failings as a father and husband.

His first guest will be Sting....he'll cut him off before he gets a word in, Arn will come out of nowhere and the next 55 minutes will be Arn and Flair beating Sting with a lead pipe

Josh Matthews has a podcast coming out soon.  Oddly enough it's not about wrestling, but mens fashion.  I like his intent to have wrestlers on there to discuss style.  It's different enough that it might work.   Can't imagine hearing any other episodes aside from that.

With this discussion I'd be up for a mini tournament for best dressed wrestler of all time.  Flair might have to be disqualified though for it to be semi-fair.

I enjoyed Ross's episode with Hurricane Helms, but I was annoyed at the constant talk about wearing darks.  I really didn't need to hear that he had NASCAR grade underwear for the WK9 show.

Jew jokes. Up-front Defensiveness over ROH's style. Outright plugging of the Insane Clown Posse's Gathering of the Juggalos??

Yup. That's him. :)

I can't fathom how a thumb ring wearing, frosted tipped hair styled zilch like Matthews is getting paid to talk about fashion. He just wore a Notre Dame cardigan on television in 2015.

The 16th episode of the Wrestling Night Review Podcast is up as I join our Master of Ceremonies John Zornek and "the Professor" Phil Bryer for my fifth session in the booth.

http://wrestlingnight.podbean.com/e/wrestling-night-podcast-episode-16/

As with our previous episode we are recapping a triple threat match up as we have been missing a few of our key players. The Aces shown for the night that we compare and contrast in depth were Tanahashi VS Shibata, Taz VS Tanaka VS Awesome, and Kawada VS Sasaki. There's much discussion about what we like and don't like about Tanahashi, what Shibata's running boot shares in common with Mega Man, what miracle of modern science is keeping Masato Tanaka alive and in better shape now than he was in 1999, just what makes Kawada's selling so damn good and what it would be like playing bloody knuckles against him. We open things up talking about booking in this era of wrestling and whether or not it's a good thing that the Ace of the company has shown more and more vulnerability over time. I need to make two corrections to points I made in the opening dialogue: I was thinking of the myth that Andre had never been slammed previous to Hogan when I claimed that he had in fact been defeated in the 80s, and when I mentioned Rougeau defeated Hogan I had no idea it was actually a clean pinfall and much later on than I originally believed.

There were tons of other great matches played over the course of the night as well so we close things out discussing Satomura VS Takahashi, Misawa/Akiyama VS Kawada/Fuchi, Anjo VS Miyato, "Smooth Sailin'" Ashley Remington, fat shaming, and even more matches yet.

I'm really proud with where the podcast is at in terms of production quality, content and format. I think we're on par with the better fan created podcasts out there. Give us a download and see what you think.

  • 3 weeks later...

Talkin' Shop on the MLW network of podcasts is pretty hit or miss for me, but this week's with Rob Conway was pretty amusing.  A highlight was everyone being perplexed over a supposed rib Austin pulled on The Con-Man in the ring.  I always get a kick out of the stories of guys that worked the undercard in WWE.   The main eventers' perspective is so much more prevalent in the podcast world today than the underneath guys (at least on the PodcastOne family.)

This is the first episode of my podcast which is titled "Exile on Badstreet" and I am joined by Will aka goodhelmet from Pro Wrestling Only and Pete aka Shoe from the Titans of Wrestling podcast to discuss the legendary career of The Fabulous Freebirds (Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy, Michael “PS” Hayes, & Buddy “Jack” Roberts.) We discuss the beginnings of the group and how they evolved into one of the most legendary acts in wrestling history. Listen to us pontificate on the guys from Badstreet U.S.A.
