JAN 2014 WRESTLING DISCUSSION REBOOT THREAD

I used to like you, Gregg.

There was a "I Used to Lover Her" joke/parody right there and you missed it.

Considered it, but it's not on Use Your Illusion, so it didn't quite fit.

If you closed your eyes and didn't hear the song before, you could convince someone "I Used to Love Her" was an early REM song.

I almost went with REM as my Bryan metaphor. It might work better. Indie band that broke in a big way, was one of the biggest bands in the world, Hall of Famers without question, but not quite as big as some other bands. The time period didn't quite match up, though.

Well, there is absolutely NOTHING the WWE can do to make DB's fans happy. All this talk about him being berried and shit makes me hate people. Ungrateful fucks.

More berry talk, please. I like to think that it was not a spellcheck mistake and some regional carny dialect lingo phrase.

mmm,

RAF

It's been awhile, but I'm back. That likely means very little, but I like announcements.

1.) The Rumble was interesting to watch as a spectacle if nothing else. I really don't think Bryan is being buried at all and I think the question of asking what exactly the audience wants them to do with Bryan is a good one. Does the crowd want the title on him? Do they even want to see him wrestling Randy Orton or Batista? Does the story to get there even matter?

I guess I'm trying to decide if The Authority angle with Bryan has led to this reaction. If so, it's been brilliant. But if the crowd would have chosen him regardless (which they sort of did a couple Wrestlemanias ago), then this angle might be a waste of time. I'm not sure.

2.) The Punk thing feels way too convenient. The wide coverage and the swift social media/Netflix reactions by WWE make me suspicious. How big a deal this is depends on how they handle it going forward, but they tend to handle things terribly going forward so who knows. I did like Gregg's explanation of how the business has evolved though, good stuff.

3.) Raw was terrible. The wrestling was good but so many people have NOTHING to do or any consistent reason to be on tv. It's absurd to me that their internet shows can have better, consistent writing and characters than their flagship show. I think they've lost the ability to create compelling television.

4.) KENTA in WWE will be so weird if it happens. Like, what are they even going to do with him?

I sort of hope they put him in a mask and team him with Samuray Del Sol, and just get them over as masked babyfaces. I'd rather see KENTA be WWE's new Japanese Rey than see him get coke peepee.

I want him to get the belt because I think when you become as popular as he is, you deserve a shot at being to top guy. If he fails, fine, if he suceeds, even better. At least we'll know. And if nothing else, anything that gets somebody other than fucking Orton and Cena on top is a good thing.

Fuck Sin Cara - KENTA will be the new Yoshi Tatsu. They're not doing anything with the gimmick.

Dammit, dammit, dammit, you beat me to this one.

Jae gets first dibs on any Yoshi Tatsu references, the rest of us pick up his scraps.

I think they should put the strap on him, too.  I get that they're trying to make him Dusty-esque and always on the chase and teasing the crowd, but that only works when you have equally over heels, a clear direction and an actual chase.

Wait, in what universe does Nirvana hold a candle to Guns N' Roses? I feel like this could take us far off-topic so maybe it should be a thread in the music forum but for now... Guns is so much better it's crazy..

Both bands, while iconic, are incredibly overrated.

So, the Miz should have won the Rumble?
