2014 MOVIE OMNIBUS THREAD

RIPPA

Family Video is great. Cheap rentals, the occasional gem, and they don't give a shit about late fees. You fucked up then you give em a fiver on top of the twenty you already owe, no biggie. And yes, the closest one to me has a Little Caesar's right next to it.

I still own the double tape of Scarface and the double-sided Goodfellas haha

So, ah, yeah, Nightcrawler is pretty much the best film I've seen this year.

As for Gyllenhaal, I mean, I haven't yet seen Birdman/Whiplash/Boyhood et al but, still, I'm kinda struggling to think of a better lead male actor performance this year. I mean, Goddamn, dude was great in this.

Finally watched Baron Munchausen.  I've had this one in reserve for quite a little while.  Three times during the film I spake aloud this phrase:  "This is a-fucking-mazing!".  When they were walking inside the sea monster, when the Baron was kneeling at the second execution and when the midget blew that mouse at the war elephants.

Alright holy jeez the CGI in this Brothers Grimm movie is fucking weak.  That gingerbread man stank on ice.  Didn't help that it was basically The Frighteners but less good.

Yes it is a theme weekend where I watch all the Terry Gilliam movies I ain't watched yet.  I just have Parnassus, Tideland and that Zero Theorem to go.

I realize I'm late to the party on this, but EDGE OF TOMORROW (or whatever they're calling it now) was pretty good. It kinda lost some of its charm in the last act when

Cruise loses his power, because it turns into more of a generic sci-fi actioner at that point

, but overall, it was a fun 2 hours, if not the overlooked popcorn masterpiece some are touting it as.

I miss my days at Prime Time Video in TN, when I was one of the only males to work in the late shift and none of the female staff would dare reshelve the porn in the back room.

Some nights I would be back there with 50+ movies, shelving for 2-3 hrs. I could probably have gotten it done in 1/4 the time, but ... why?

I've seen Tideland and I really dug it. I think I might be in the minority on that one though. It's a smaller story than he usually tells, something I think he should do more of, with still the requisite amount of weirdness.

Because there were actual females that you worked with that you could have been talking to? :P

No, you cheeky bastard; it was already apparent that said females weren't into hardcore, so what was the point? Yuk yuk yuk!

Really loved 'Bad Words' with Jason Bateman as a 40-something guy who enters children's spelling bees.  The first half is just awesome: Bateman being an asshole to everyone, just an absolute unlikeable monster who hates everybody.  The second half is a little too convenient, too snug, too nice but it's still all right.  My love for the first half of Bateman being awful outweighs my slight hostility to the second half.

The Matrix trilogy has been playing a bunch on IFC, and I'll never "get" it.  The first one was ok at best, but the sequels were really bad.  Lots of talking then Agent whatshisname overturning plates of cookies and talking about overturning plates of cookies.  Cornel West is on some council, hadn't remembered that.  And lots of gimp suits.

I gotta know what "overturning plates of cookies" is a filter for.

Nothing.  It's this scene...

At least the Oracle wasn't wearing a gimp suit in this scene.  Maybe she just likes the smell of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies Agent Smith.

I don't know if anyone here listens to the Gentlemen's Guide to Midnite Cinema podcast but everyone should.  As their tag line goes: They bring the class to the trash.  Very nice guys and they cover everything from the Korean New Wave to Eurocrime to Z grade 80s/90s action films.  I created a list that's like the DVDVR 80s project in that I have 125 films (well, there are some trilogies as one entry).  Their wheelhouse usually includes: Charles Bronson, Henry Silva, J&B whiskey, fingerless gloves, half shirts, Canadian Tuxedos, Zubaz pants, fanny packs, metal plated hats, etc.

I have the box-set for the Matrix movies on DVD, and it has some cool commentaries where you have a Critics commentary with Todd McCarthy and I forget the other guy. You also have a "philosophers commentary" that I think Cornel West does the Commentary.

I have mentally disavowed the Matrix sequels the same way i refuse to accept that there were any Highlander movies made other than the first film.

This is how The Matrix ended:

Neo soars into the cyber sky.  Hard cut to black.

The Critics commentary on the second and third film do make a great point (albeit it's been a few years and I need to test this theory). If you cut out all of the Zion scenes and make a single movie within the Matrix, you have a pretty solid sequel. Just to prevent holes, I'm sure there's one or two scenes that you would have to throw in from Zion; however.
