2014 RANDOM TV THOUGHTS

Has anyone else hung in there with The Strain or The Leftovers?

I'm still there, but barely.  I was apoplectic when Doctor Who went to the casino, so many stupid decisions.  The damn music video montages are really over about now, too.  The best episode was the one where the crazy lady got a Craigslist prostitute to shoot her in the chest while Angel of Death played in the background.  This past one was good too.  It's good to know Deputy Sexy Britches was an asshole even before the Departure (or whatever it's called).  They were smart and kept it to 10 episodes so I would be more likely to stick around.  Unlike the Nine, which pissed me off royally before ABC dumped it.

The Simpsons Movie is on and it's great. I haven't seen it since the theater.

I love this movie. Its what got me interested in Simpsons again after not watching a good 3-4 seasons. I've seen it twice yet somehow still completely missed the reference to time travel episode Homer did back in the 90's.

Anyone keep up with Defiance?  Season 2 wrapped up this week.

I thought it was a fair step backwards in quality from season 1, but it's probably still SyFy's best show by a wide margin.  They've done a good job developing a large cast of characters and giving most of them something to do away from the main plot.  It seemed like too much time was spent this season on a main plot that never ended up being that interesting.  I liked Irisa a lot more when she was just a character, not the destroy of worlds.

Still, Defiance was one of my favorite shows this summer and one of two or three I'd probably watch if it was a fall series and faced better competition.  If the show isn't picked up for a third season, I'll miss Stahma and Datak.  Their interfamily power struggle, squabbling, and treachery might have been the best thing on the show this season.  They show off the show/'s knack for creating complex characters.

Poor Julie Benz,  Her character was mayor last season,  This year, she ran a brothel and got hooked on drugs.  Not really an improvement, character-wise (that said, Amanda got plenty of strong moments in the latter half of the season).

Really enjoyed the Divide's season finale too.  Bleak, but powerful.  A little hard to see where they could go from here if they get picked up, though.  The body count in the finale was pretty high, and it's virtually implausible that a couple of the living characters could extricate themselves from the mess they're in to return next season.

I have to disagree a good deal on it being a step backwards in quality. The first season felt kind of bland and aimless. I thought S2 was a massive step up with a lot of good and interesting character development going around along with something big actually happening with the season plot. Not sure where they go either, but I look forward to it if they do another season.

What do you consider a high body count? Only one main character died and those who were within the cave-in were protected.

The Divide had a high body count, not Defiance.  Several important characters died, one is missing, two are screwed over to the point it's hard to see how they stay involved in the show/

I do hope Defiance gets another season.  Really like the characters.  I actually think Irisa is one of the weaker characters.  The Tarrs need their own spin-off where they try to sabotage and kill each other every week (interrupted by reunions and cease fires that last one week).

Also, I'm sorry, but this run of bringing back cancelled shows needs to end, if only to shut up the Browncoats of every property.

It's gotten to the point where even shows nobody was clamoring for are coming back.

Someone on twitter made a similar comment and i said "when is Mr. Merlin coming back?"

Yeah, kind of my feeling too. Fans made a big fuss and convince executives the TV show has a bigger fanbase than it actually has, they give it another shot and then it still flops. Jericho was a great example.

I really liked Almost Human and would love to see it come back but I'm not participating in one of those big fan campaigns. Is there any point? It got cancelled; it's just the way it goes sometimes.

Given the specific phrase Browncoats, let me appeal for a moment to my fellow members of said tribe:  It's over.  O-V-E-R.  It ain't coming back.

Arrested Development was gone for 7 years before it's comeback.  Veronica Mars was gone for 7 years before the movie, and needed an absurdly dedicated creator and star.

Firefly has been off the air for TWELVE FUCKING YEARS.  It's creator is busy as fuck heading up the biggest movie franchise in the world today. It's lead star has a different tv show that has significantly more viewers than Firefly ever got.  It already got a movie, that didn't do very well.  The cast is too damn old to play the action star role anymore.

Firefly ain't coming back, it's over.

(I would go see Serenity 2 at least a half dozen times in the theater if I am ever proven wrong.)

Ah, sorry I somehow blended the two into one.

Irisa is definitely one of the weaker characters, and I'm not certain what they could do to make her a stronger one.

It's remained one of my favorites as well. I think season 1 was a bit more memorable with some of the episodes. This season I missed having Mia Kirshner around as Kenya. She was great and I got excited for her not quite return. Agreed w/ enjoying the Tarrs, love Stahma. Did really enjoy Anna Hopkins as Berlin, thought she was a great addition to a strong cast. It felt like a really long in-between time as it was almost a full year between seasons but I also hope for sure it's back for another.

Some of these season 23 episodes of THE SIMPSONS are perfectly enjoyable.

"Maybe we could afford a vacation if some big shot didn't pick up the tab for his buddies at Mr. Steak."

"Again with Mr. Steak. Do you know why I go to Mr. Steak?  Because at Mr. Steak they don't get mad at me for spending a lot of money at Mr. Steak!!"

I just saw something that was theoretically impossible:  A new (Season 25!) episode of the Simpsons, centered around Lisa, that was legitimately great.

Man, it's going to suck when Simpsons is only on 24 hours a week instead of 24 hours a day on FXX.

I haven't watched a lot of the marathon, but I've watched a little each day.  For me, anyway, the later eps have mostly been just as entertaining as the early stuff.  I was never a huge fan of the show, so I generally don't find the early eps as funny as some people do.

"Woman down! Woman down!" got a chuckle out of me earlier (it's the opposite of "man up".  Homer was yelling it at one point after he tried to man up and failed).

The Lisa/class president and Homer's elevator baby eps were pretty damn enjoyable.

Edit: This last season is worth watching for the openings.
