I just mean do something irreparably stupid.

With her career now, doing anything remotely shit stirring outside the realm of her true profession will harm her popularity. People are extremely sensitive in Hollywood and left leaning. All it takes is one tweet and a career goes up in smoke. That's some damage that can't be undone. Especially if you're planning to leave MMA for movies.

Mel Gibson

Mike Tyson

What about them?

People that seem to find work despite "sensitivity".

Since you've proved incapable of explaining yourself beyond one sentence, I will just go ahead and deconstruct this.

First, you realize that a boxer who was past his prime in 1996 and an actor who has been acting since the mid 1970s at least are both vastly different than a twenty-six year old woman two years in her profession? Okay, then.

If anything, Tyson and Gibson are arguments that you just can't do whatever you want and then believe you can make it. Both for completely different reasons.

Tyson was a young black man in a sport that had reduced young, virile black men that had been successful generations before him into sniveling, decrepit old men trying to keep Uncle Sam off their ass. And this well before we had the stereotype of the broke athlete. The black men before Tyson, who he had claimed he was cut from the same cloth from, died broke and penniless before Tyson became THE GUY. Joe Louis? Broke. Sonny Liston? Broke. Sugar Ray Robinson? Broke. All those guys had been synonymous with the phrase "baddest man of the planet". And without Robinson, we would not have the term pound-for-pound in combat sports. Joe Louis was able to unite an extremely racist country for just a brief moment when he fought Schmeling the second time and still was treated like garbage afterwards. By the time he was Mike's age now, Joe was feebly trying to sell shitty soft drinks that he had sold his name to. All those guys were humiliated in some shape or form and harassed by the tax man or law.

So when Tyson came along in the mid 1980s, he was supposedly on the new frontier for athletes. Everything was ten times bigger than it was when he was a kid watching Roberto Duran fights in the nosebleeds at MSG. He wasn't picked to be the guy right off the bat like Rousey was. He had a machine behind him though with not only television backing him, but the introduction of pay-per-view. Keep in mind, this is YEARS before people like Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett were able to leave high school and go to the NBA. This is years before the NFL and NBA got to the salary structure it has now. Mike Tyson was eighteen years old making more than a quarter million dollars. By the time he was twenty, he was making more than ANY executive in the United States. The ONLY person that had even reached that status, who is even comparable, was Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson was getting $250k checks when he was like six or seven years old. None of the guys before Tyson's time except Ali and Frazier even sniffed six million dollars total in cumulative purses. But compared to the ascent he made so quickly and dramatically, no one came close to matching that. Ali was the closest but he didn't have that respect early on that Tyson TOOK from people. Mike Tyson had to try and go against something that was much bigger than him.

Tyson's problem, other than the obvious shock of being that big, was that he thought winning would keep him out of the trouble most of predecessors had. The thing was.....that's what all of them thought. He had several monkey wrenches in his life, but winning in a boxing match in the most ruthless manner possible was the glue in his life. Even with all his money, boxing was the only thing had. When the Douglas debacle happened and he caught the rape beef, that was when he became public enemy #1. He was in the same place that all the men most culturally like him traveled before. And that was where he stayed even when he retired in 2005. Even at his most fractured state, people were still quite frightened of him. He was a freak show. So the only way he could defeat that was by showing he was a freak show in other way. Twenty seven year old Mike Tyson would beat the holy hell out of forty-seven year old Mike Tyson for making such an ass out of himself. The stuff he has done since his retirement has bordered on ministrel show at points. But he wanted to repair his fragile image among people. Thus, you have him dancing around dressed as Dracula and singing songs like an idiot. He became just like the men who came before him. Mike Tyson from the Tillman and Alex Stewart fights is not the same goofy motherfucker we see today. That is almost a different person. Hollywood isn't going to let that type of Mike Tyson in.

You know who was up for Mike's cameo role in The Hangover 2? Mel Gibson. Mel had one of the most successful careers in Hollywood and always straddled the line as a very opinionated guy. However, he didn't TRULY cross it until 2010 with the tapes with his wife. The anti-semitic stuff in 2006 was damn close, but there was pressure to release Apocalypto. Everything other that was in the realm of movies, his profession. But when those tapes came out, he made it impossible to even get a cameo as a tattoo artist in The Hangover II. That's the nadir for someone who has released some of the biggest movies all time. Go ahead, name the biggest theatrical release for Mel since those tapes came out. I'll wait.

When you fuck up to the point where you can't even go on the apology tour (like he did with the LGBT community years before IIRC), you know it's over for you. And that's what Mel did. He has more money than Rousey could even imagine, but there are limits to everything you can do with it. If you believe you can go into Hollywood as someone not thinking like the status quo (and subsequently letting everyone know), you are fucking fool. And you will get broken like everyone else who tried to do that.

That is a really interesting write up about Tyson. I watched the recent HBO show he had, and still need to see Tyson, but is there a good book you could recommend or maybe another documentary I missing out on?

Regardless, Gibson and Tyson (Who, let's not forget, is a convicted rapist, which made the uproar amongst the H2 cast about Gibson HILARIOUS) still gets work. This seems worse than saying something stupid on twitter. Hell, Rousey just finished doing a movie with Gibson.

Actually, the part that Gibson was slated for was the tattoo artist that went to Liam Neeson instead.  Then that ended up going to Nick Cassavetes when Neeson couldn't do reshoots.

Mel Gibson is someone who should be directing blockbusters. Do you know many bums in Hollywood are getting $50+ million to churn crap that doesn't even break even? The man made a R rated non franchise movie that made over $600 million. That's fucking ridiculous. How you go from Braveheart (a vehicle he created himself) to a role in the Expendables being the biggest thing you're a part of? For Ronda that's a step up, but it ain't for a man who was the caliber of Mel Gibson. People won't fucking remember Mel Gibson for a shitty Machete movie.

That's all you could muster in response?

When your idea of "irreparably stupid" is saying stupid shit on twitter in comparison to rape? yep.

RONDA HAS BEEN IN MMA FOR TWO YEARS!

When she is singing Christmas carols with Miesha Tate on some late night talk show as a middle aged woman with a busted face, then come talk to us. Otherwise, you have no point comparing her to Mel and Mike Tyson.

And her amount of time in MMA has shit-all to do with Hollywood, which is what you were bringing up in the first place, saying that such a "left-leaning environment" would never forgive her.

I said until her career in both is over. DId you not see that? Apparently, you did not see that because you have nothing to say.

There is no person that will say 9/11 was an inside job and believe that their career will sustain as is. The lynch mob will come out and get you.

Fucking Mike Tyson isn't trying to navigate through Hollywood. This guy has no qualms about being a serious actor. He is a forty seven year old man trying to repair and rehab whatever is left of his life for his kids. He had been (and probably still is in certain circles) a pariah as long as Ronda Rousey has been living. No one would choose to be an outcast for twenty plus years for a movie cameo. For right now, everyone loves Ronda or love watching her be crazy. That's Tyson pre-Robin Givens basically. Mike Tyson after that is virtually the reason why someone invented locks to go on doors. He became the boogeyman. Once you become the boogeyman, it's a LONG and ardous journey to pick up the pieces.

While folks in this thread have brought up how crazy she is, Ronda has shown she is complacent ENOUGH not to step on anyone's toes. After she got torn a new one on Twitter after posting a video or w/e, she has not been anyone other than typical Ronda Rousey. That isn't saying she will never ever snap one day, but the UFC knows they can't babysit everyone all the time. It's impossible. Everyday Dana wakes up, he probably fears the absolute worst about one of his fighters. That's out of his and Lorenzo's hands though.
