🎼 You better work (Cover girl)... Work it, girl (Give a twirl)... Do your thing on the runway... Work (Supermodel)! You better work it, girl (Of the world)... Wet your lips and make love to the camera!

Well, it's time for Backlash!  Boy did THAT sneak up on me.  (And it sure as hell snuck up on about a dozen people who are no longer with the company 😬)

Β

πŸ’Ώ It don't matter what you wear (It doesn't matter what you wear), they're checkin' out your savior-faire (Ooh, ooh, ooh, yeah)! And it don't matter what you do... 'Cause everything looks good on you!

Some of those people may have been asking for their release, or more likely, death's sweet embrace when Pat McAfee took the mic and decided he wanted to die on Saturday challenge Gunther to a match at Backlash. For me, this tweet more or less summarizes it:

Β

The fact that it's being sponsored by a personal injury attorney is *chef's kiss*1

Β

πŸ§”β€β™€οΈΒ I see your picture everywhere (I see your picture everywhere), A million-dollar derriΓ¨re (Ooh, ooh, ooh, yeah)! And when you walked in to the room, you had everybody's eyes on you!

And if that news wasn't enough to get you down... Logan Paul is probably getting a title shot at Jey Uso.Β  Who can tell if it's on Saturday, or the upcoming SNME, or even TripleMania!Β  Hey, LP "lives" in Puerto Rico now, so you know seeing Paul as champ in Mexico would boost up Caribbean viewership!Β

Anyway, there are literally only 4 matches set for Backlash which is low, even by HHH's standards.Β  Let's see if that changes.

Β

(Pro wrestling = Drag.)

Enjoy the week!

The opening with Heyman and Jey was good. Paul losing his shit over arguably legit reasons to be mad at Punk and Roman was good, but more to the point Heyman did a great job of making sure Seth and co. would be properly booed as heels the main event ithe segment set up.

Penta/JD was solid. Dug Penta overcoming the odds and the various elements involved with even Gable coming down.

Sheamus/Theory was another solid match.

The Becky/Lyra segment/brawl was another good one. Its been nice seeing Becky trying to set herself as a heel properly and not play too much into the audience who typically want to cheer her. This feud has also seen Lyra showing some decent passion and little more character than usual. Kind of hope Lyra retains in their next match just to drag things out a pinch and get lyra some extra cred before Becky takes the belt. One thing that is somewhat sad to me is i think this feud and WM miss may honestly do more for Bayley than an actual WM match would have as Becky's shit talk on Bayley has definitely got her name more over than it was on the main roster the month heading into WM.

Io/Roxanne was good as expected. The two worked well together and I dug the flash pin trade actually leading to the finish. Roxanne faking out Io out with respect post match just so Giulia could get the drop on her was a nice heel move. They really should just move both women up from NXT officially at this point.

Rusev/Otis had some fun moments, but wasn't long and wa more about the post match murder of Alpha Academy. Doesn't feel like the crow dis really feeling Rusev yet.

The Gunther/Pat segment was good though any ending to Backlash that isn't Pat dead and off of WWE for at least a few weeks will feel wrong.

Jey/Seth actually built into a pretty good tv main event. Crowd was in Jey's favor and there was plenty of decent story bits in the latter half playing to the current stories built up. I do dislike Jey succeeding in his first defense via dq/non-finish, but he at least got some protection since the loss would have only been due to Seth and oc.'s bs cheating. They definitely played things out better this week not doing shit that could easily get Seth or Bron cheered.

Β

Good wrestling and pretty solid storytelling. Don't have too many complaints for tonight surprisingly enough. Its good to see them hopefully recognizing mistakes they made with Sth's group last week and adjusting. I'm curious to see if they leave it at Seth, Bron, and Heyman or add more members with punk and Roman ready to kill. I kind of like that they teased the Jey title switch early since conventional wisdom would lead others to think its the thing to happen at Summerslam (and may still be). Anyways good show.

Didn't realize part of the contract agreement between Heyman and Bron was sharing each other's spray tans. Holy fuck.

Like him or dislike him, McAfee cuts a hell of a promo.

Didn't watch, but caught a clip of Kross' promo and really enjoyed it.Β  I hope he's finally connecting with the crowd, putting it all together on the main roster.Β Β

Not sure if this was the same promo but Kross sure was implying that he was interested in the recently released The Righteous in one promo.Β  I would be shocked if Triple H would bring them in

I liked getting one more match than usual on Raw this week. From Netflix debut in Jan to Mania, I had no commercials during Raw, then the night after WM I suddenly had ads that night and last week, while this week randomly returned to no ads which was a welcome surprise to have back.Β

Thought Lyra absolutely killed it for her part in the promo seg, good stuff. Roxanne/IYO was really good with IYO on fire with the crowd. Seth/Jey turned in to a pretty fun one. I thought for sure Jey/Logan was a lock for Backlash but I guess not. Feels like Backlash could've potentially been a stacked card.

I saw that one, this one was with Cathy Kelly on Raw where he called the crowd "bad guys" and told Zayn he should've taken Rollins offer.Β  Still with AJ hair though,Β

Paul attacked Jey after the show ended.

That match ruled. Was rooting for Giulia but both looked great.

Really enjoyed the battle royal as well and was nice to see an actually unexpected winner. Thought Sean Legacy shined great towards the end, solid progression with Hendry/Trick, enjoyed the Wes/Wentz exchanges, and am excited for Myles to get a shot.

Right but with Backlash at it's 5 matches, I'm assuming it's not being added now/held off until the next one.

This was a great episode of NXT with the battle royal and the main being my favorites. Myles is a wild card pick assuming we don't get Dempsey worming his way into the match in the next few weeks.Β

Trick is continuing side quests waiting for his call up like Roxanne.

I like Oba mentioning no more 3 ways for him.

Hendry/Hank/Tank vs. DarkState was solid. Dug the Trick/Hendry feud continuing and leaving poor Hank & Tank to the slaughter.

Zaria/Kelani was good. The two worked well together and had a nice speed vs. power bout.

The battle royal was good fun. Thought the eliminations were well done and spread out in a decent pace for the most part. They also played nicely into various feuds and relationships. Myles winning was not on my bingo card but neat to see.Β

Jaida/Karmen was nice while it lasted.

Giulia/Jordynne was damn good. The two started off slow and escalated more an more form the first big move. Despite the accidental head drops I thought this was easily the best Giulia has looked in NXT so far. She just seemed far more comfortable than usual be that in how hard she could go with Jordynne or getting to act more like a dick. Those head drops were nasty but didn't really worry me since they weren't much compared to when she was doing shoot headbutts in Stardom. So happy she put an end to that shit in NXT. Not sure if Giulia is done with NXT after this, but this was a fine match to leave on if so.

Good wrestling and storytelling all around. Digging the build to Battleground and continued build of various names in the women's divisions. Its particularly nice to see that Lash might be in for a singles push. Myles getting such a big match with Oba is refreshing to see though it leaves me to think either Trick/Hendry or Vaquer/Grace will be the main event for Battleground which I have no issues with. Great show.

I totally agree about Lyra's promo.Β  She's always good in the ring but this was definitely her big moment on the mic.

Jeepers...

If anything, the announcers should've sold that immediately. Shut up Corey... who cares what you're talking about... Je'Von just did some ridiculous shit... again.

Whoever decided to put Jordynne Grace next to Lash Legend AND Izzi Dame must have some problems with her.Β  Β Get that women a stepladder in this scenarioΒ Β

The other Corey moment last night was him just yelling OH NO OH NO OH NO or something like over and over again when Guilia got dropped on her neck.Β  Β We don't need to have Vietnam like neck flashbacks to let us know that she could have been seriously hurt on that move

Pretty sure that's Vic and not Corey talking during the clip.

Eh that's probably more because of Corey's history with concussions.Β  He's been pretty vocal about head shots, et al.

Story going around that Randy Orton was going to have new music and a possible heel turn last year.Β  The Powers That Be all changed their mind when the crowds in France sang his song start to finish.
