🎸Fortune, fame... Mirror, vain... Gone insane... But the memory remains....

We're back for another week in the land of All Elite.  Now 100% Miro-free!  So what else happened last week... hmm...  MJF cut his standard "lol old" promo at Dustin and brought up the verbotten former-founder! (ooooh)  They'll have a match this week.

🥁 Heavy rings on fingers wave, another star denies the grave... See the nowhere crowd cry the nowhere tears of honor...

Harley Cameron sang for us!  But was interrupted by the Chief Executive Officer of AEW.  Will Mercedes walk with Harley? Let's find out!

🎵 Like twisted vines that grow, hide and swallow mansions whole... Dim the light of an already faded prima donna...

Here's what else is on tap for tonight!

I think it's very cool of the Gunns to volunteer to have their spines ripped out by the Hurt Syndicate.

Apologies in advance for the extreme 90's-ness of this video.

(Depending on how you feel about Fuel, their last good song... and it has roughly nothing to do with anything Metallica does. RIP Marianne.)

Enjoy the week!   La, da, da, da, la, da, da, da, la, da, da, da....

Fuck yes for using this song!  I'm still hoping TK uses this for the eventual Toni/Mariah match after Grand Slam.  And I used this line for my senior yearbook quote.  First half didn't apply, but going insane and the memory remains was high school and I walked away okay with that.

Also, I won't deny some songs on "Load" and "Reload" are kind of eh but they were a huge part of middle school for me and damn if it didn't help me get through some heavy shit back then (well, these plus "Ride the Lightning" but anyway.)  The thing some Metallica fans like to do is take both of these albums and put the best songs together to make a much better album than what we got.  On Jericho's pod they did this and called "Superload" which I'm not mad at.

I love you to bits otherwise I'd do a Toni-size "How......dare you!!!!!" reaction.  I get it, the older stuff had more quality songs but I learned in middle school to separate that from what they're trying and have an open mind.  If there were at least a couple songs that got my attention each album then that's fine by my.  Which has largely been true all this time though I still have a hard time paying attention to "72 Seasons"  One song sounds good to me though the "Lux Eterna" song felt hollow and seemed like it was begging to be used to Nascar.  Which it was last season but I just don't like that song at all.

Oh, right, Dynamite.  *looks at card* Looks good to me!

The only good thing about the Lou Reed record is it gave us "I am the table!" which is forever immortalized in Botchamania.  That was so out of left field I couldn't begin to comprehend what I was hearing though I might try it again to see if things changed.

'Lulu' is an interesting album and highly underrated. It's commercial appeal leads to a negative discourse. To my taste, it's both Reed's and Metallica's most compelling latter day work (sure, competition isn't all that strong). While many critics panned the album, adventurous UK experimental magazine Wire ranked it in their 2011 top 10.

Apparently, there was a pretty solid ratings spike during Harley's segment on Collision. I can't think of anyone else involved in that segment that anyone would give a shit about, so I think it's pretty clear that Starley Cameron is a DRAW.

Yes, I am kidding about there not being anyone else in that segment. Sort of. But it is noteworthy that people tuned back in during that segment.

Memory Remains is standard late-high point of Metallica.  Marianne's appearance is brave and haunting.  Note the "say yes" at the end. It's almost desperate.  She's the one that's daring to say, this song is about my life and I am owning it.

That's the life that's painted on top of the canvas Metallica has laid.  She makes the song, not the other way around.

Since Dynamite was taped yesterday....  Spoilers HO... (from PWI)

Spoiler

-Hangman Adam Page defeated Max Caster by pinfall after a buckshot lariat

-World Trios Championship Match: PAC, Wheeler Yuta and Claudio Castignoli retained over The Undisputed Kingdom (Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong). The finish saw the referee take a long time to remove a chair, allowing Yuta to low-blow O’Reilly and roll him up in a small package for the win.

Backstage, Renee Paquette interviewed MJF.  He badmouthed Texas and Dustin Rhodes.  MJF told Rhodes to get on his knees and pray to The Devil.  Hangman Page then interrupted the interview and demanded that MJF leave. MJF told him that he smelled like Jack Daniels.  Page then asked MJF if that is the best he has.  MJF then said the reality is that Page lost his friends and sanity because he didn’t get a little apology and the worst part is that the fans buy his crap.  MJF then told Page that unlike him, he (MJF) is going to become a two time Champion. He then walked off as Page stood there looking mad.

-Samoa Joe, Hook and Katsuyori Shibata defeated Jon Cruz, Aaron Solo and Grillo. After the match, Joe challenged The Patriarchy to face them with the winners getting a shot at the AEW World Trios Championships. It appears Joe, Hook and Shibata are now called The Ops, as Joe kept using this name when mentioning the three of them.

Ring of Honor World Champion Chris Jericho did an interview where he challenged Bandido to meet him in the ring for a showdown. They put a spotlight on them and a bell rang.  They then went back to back and walked paces like an old school Western shoot out.  The bell rang again and then they faced each other. Bryan Keith from behind attacked Bandido. Keith and Jericho gave Bandido a beat-down. The Outrunners came down to make the save, as they all brawled. Big Bill then came out carrying The Bandido Wanted Poster.  He entered the ring and went to chokeslam Bandido, but Powerhouse Hobbs hit the ring and they fought.  Hobbs dropped Bill with a big spinebuster.

Backstage, Cope and Jay White teamed up attacking Jon Moxley and stealing the briefcase that holds the AEW World Championship.

A second backstage segment, this time with Dustin Rhodes doing an interview, saying that MJF was about to find out why Dustin is the last of his kind.

-MJF defeated Dustin Rhodes after the referee stopped the match

After the match, MJF was going to torment Dustin some more but, Hangman Page hit the ring to make the save and faced off with MJF.  MJF tackled Hangman.  They battled in the ring with security hitting the the ring to stop it. They battled into the crowd and kept going up above the entrance for one of the sections.  Page was dragged

Page was dragged backstage somewhere.  MJF came backto the ring and took the mic, saying Page was gutless and afraid of him.  He dared Page to come back…Page charged back down and there was another brawl.  Security and officials tried to keep them apart, but they kept fighting.  They were finally pulled apart.  Chuck Taylor was at ringside. MJF was pulled to the back so Page just started beating up all the security guards.

Backstage, Swerve Strickland was interviewed.  Prince Nana was upset over everything Ricochet has done. Nana said he wants Swerve to focus on getting back the AEW World title.  Swerve then said he will, but he has to take care of this first.  Nana then walked off.

-Megan Bayne defeated Maya World.

After the match, as Bayne was leaving, she and Kris Statlander met for a face-off, possibly teasing a future feud.

-Kris Statlander defeated Penelope Ford after dropping her with a tombstone piledriver

After the match, Bayne returned and attacked Statlander hitting an F-5 on her.

Backstage, Rene Paquette interviewed Willow Nightingale, who was immediately attacked by Marina Shafir.  Jon Moxley took then over the interview and said White and Copeland are dead men walking.

-AEW World Tag Team Championship Match: The Hurt Syndicate (Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin) retained over The Gunns (Colten and Austin)

Pre-Taping Notes:

Before the taping began Tony came out dressed in a dapper suit and the same haircut as Clark Kent in James Gunn’s Superman.  He did his Timecop speech saying we will be in two places at once this Wednesday since we can see ourselves on Max and TBS.

Hey, a music reference I get for once in Metallica, my favourite band ever.

Hello my bestie. Didn't know you used said line for your yearbook. That's cool. Really wish we had that over here. Me and a girl tried but it didn't take. Instead you bring your school polo shirt to get signed.

Yeah, Load and Reload needed trimming. Until it Sleeps, Bleeding Me and The Outlaw Torn are the highlights of the former. Latter are Fuel, The Memory Remains and The Unforgiven II. Two albums I replay the least.

At first I was going to say how very dare you ala my friend above Timeless Toni Storm style but I'm coming around to this. I'd say these are the best Metallica songs since The Memory Remains:

  • All Nightmare Long.
  • Cyanide.
  • The Day That Never Comes.
  • The Unforgiven III.
  • Hardwired.
  • Atlas Rise!
  • Moth into Flame.
  • 72 Seasons.
  • Lux AEterna.
  • Screaming Suicide.

Probably an unpopular opinion, Death Magnetic is the best Metallica album since Metallica.

Oh, wrestling talk!

In all honesty, "St. ANGER" would be better with different production.  And "Hardwired to self-destruct" had a few good tracks.

Plus, there's the Lou Reed record!

Have you heard St bAnger?  Some dude re-recorded all of the instruments and apparently fixed a bunch of the production and it's supposed to sound much better.

Woah. This is the first I've heard of it. I'd give it a listen if it meant not hearing Lars' shitty tinny drums with the treble maxed out.

Ok. I just listened to half of Frantic. It still sucks. I forgot how garbage and cringey and edgelordy the lyrics are. "My lifestyle, determines my death style." Ok there rich guy. The drums still sound like shit. They're toned down, but I don't think there's anything you can do other than somehow get access to the master files to that album, scrub out all of Lars' "work," and redo the percussion yourself.

Some kind of monster is an incredibly underrated movie. And incredibly (unintentionally) hilarious. Crybaby Mustaine being one of many highlights.

"Some Kind of Monster" is so, so, so good. It's the documentary Goodfellas/Casino to me: a movie that I can walk into at any moment, beginning, middle, or end, and just watch the rest of the way through and thoroughly enjoy. It really doesn't matter if you start at the beginning after your first viewing. Is it the best rock doc ever? Maybe, maybe not...but the replay value is incredible. Another movie that has become that for me is I,Tonya, but whatever.

As for post-Black Album 'Tallica, I don't think there's really a solid, beginning-to-end good album in the discography. Some are unlistenable (St. Anger), some are not really worth a full revisit (72 Seasons), and some are okay but maybe too bloated or self-conscious to consider as anything more than decent (Hardwired...). I'm not even precious about pre-Black Album Metallica. I just think around the mid-90s, their albums became 4-5 good songs with cool riffs surrounded by 8 to 10 songs that lacked much creative juice. I don't think good production would've saved St. Anger, which sounds like everyone having collective writer's block and blaming each other for it (the fact that they wondered if maybe the problem was Kirk's soloing just shows how crazy their thinking was during that time) and the documentary makes it pretty clear that that was at least partially what was going on.

As for AEW, I'm admittedly kinda bummed that Grand Slam is not a PPV because the card is really stacked and exciting to me and I worry that its going to feel more like a "special TV episode" - predictable outcomes, matches getting cut into with commercial breaks, fewer surprises - than what it deserves. I'm hoping they find a way to make it feel like something bigger and better than one of their lame Battle of the Belt shows.

The weird thing about Some Kind of Monster is how all of the way through, they're playing demos of those songs, and the drums sound normal. Like the decision to replace Lars' drums with copper pots and cauldrons must have been made after the camera crew decided they had enough footage already.

Also, last time I watched it, it filled me with the urge to listen to Used For Glue by Rival Schools, because there was an advert for that single on the back cover of a magazine Kirk was reading.

Lots of Metallica talk which I'm very tempted to respond to.  But to your point when I first saw the video I was transfixed by what I saw and heard from her.  I didn't know anything about her at the time but I'm in full agreement she made that song.

Also, I'll confess I thought you were talking about "Fuel" and was pretty confused about what non-Metallica part you were referring to.  Saying that about Memory makes sense.

I'm sorry, I held off on saying anything before but there's no need for this.  Arguing with somebody about the same stuff is tiresome and the last TV thread was unbearable the last page or so.  Please don't go down this road again and if you can please just ignore each other.

The thing about watching Some Kind of Monster in modern times is, it really makes it clear (with what we know now) that Lars was right (about Napster).
