RIPPA Posted January 27 Posted January 27 I had been kicking around splitting them out anyway since I wasn't thrilled with the 30 for 30 Thread. It is mainly for the upcoming stuff but I am sure there will be times old shit needs a place to go. Finally had something I could start a thread with https://youtu.be/oGA8VYSdjZk?si=GhsNgNo3pGJ4dTMk Court of Gold Netflix series on the 2024 Olympics Men's Basketball It does seem that someone was smart and just decided to put a camera in front of KD and let him talk shit

Tabe Posted February 15 Posted February 15 Netflix has announced they're doing a documentary on the Detroit Red Wings. Don't have details beyond that.

hammerva Posted February 16 Posted February 16 Fox Nation is doing a doc series on Alabama football. Oh well it will be on another network eventually
hammerva Posted February 18 Posted February 18 The HBO special on "We Beat the Dream Team" was pretty good although I am not sure it is anything we didn't really know. Looking at the full Select team that played the Dream Team and man that was an elite team. Although I have no recollection of Rodney Rogers and whether he was that elite of a player. The biggest part of this was how bothered they were that Coach K said in the original documentary that the game was fixed for us to lose as mind games to make them try harder. Which if so worked because not only was Dream Team dominant but in the scrimmage game after that they beat them by 40. Coach K still riding with this even when talking to Grant Hill personally. An argument that not even Magic and Michael was buying. The point they made was Michael Jordan didn't play enough in the scrimmage. We know he played but no idea how many minutes. The best part was PJ Carlesimo saying that that Coack K has a terrible memory and "never let a good story get away from the facts" 1

Beat out Grant Hill for ACC rookie of the year, and then was the conference player of the year in 93. Ended up being a journeyman in the NBA, played for a bunch of teams, but lasted for like 10 or 12 years. Was a solid guy for some bad Clippers teams, and a good sixth man for some decent Phoenix teams. 3
lostinube Posted February 21 Posted February 21 Everyone on that team got chosen in the 1st Round within the next two seasons so yeah, the Select team was stacked. They were undermanned though, with only eight guys. I wonder who else could have gone with them. Grant Hill must be a very calm person to not have punched Coach K in the face after the "childish dream" comment.

Throw him and Laettner on and that's a team that might've won gold themselves. Maybe round it out with at least one of the other Fab Five guys, Howard or Rose. That's a damn good team full of guys who had at least solid NBA careers (outside Hurley, of course, but extenuating circumstances.) 1
hammerva Posted February 22 Posted February 22 Yeah I wonder if they didn't bring in Shaq because they were worried that he would overshadow someone. I want to say that there was an argument between whether Laetner or Shaq should have been the college guy. Just using the 1993 NBA draft as a guide, you could actually build another great team without the ones listed: Larry Johnson (although maybe he was in the league already), Alonzo Mouring, Calbert Cheaney, Shawn Bradley, Nick Van Exel, and a few others. Holy shit that 1993 NBA draft is god like

Holy shit that 1993 NBA draft is god like The Dream Team wasn’t going to play anyone with a Shaq type player in the Olympics, that’s why he wasn’t on the Select Team. I don’t remember there being that much debate on the college slot, I think Laetner wrapped it up with the season he had in 91/92 and winning the National Championship.
Brian Fowler Posted February 22 Posted February 22 By all accounts, they were the two players under consideration for the reserved college player slot, but I don't know that they ever became particularly close to picking Shaq over Laettner. I'm just imagining some of the possible variations on that team though. Imagine rolling out a lineup that was "small ball' expect everybody was like 6'7" or taller? Something like Penny, Rose, Hill, Mashburn, Webber. Five guys that can score, and that can pass, and can play one on one? Or putting Shaq in the low post with Webber or Laettner in the high post and Allan Houston in the corner, with Hurley and Hill handling the ball...

odessasteps Posted February 22 Posted February 22 The way I remember it, the 12th man picked was going to be the bench warmer. And they wanted a token college guy. And, let’s be honest, the white poster boy from Duke was going to be their obvious choice, even if he was a heel to most CBB fans.
RIPPA Posted March 13 Author Posted March 13 The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox Spoiler alert - despite what the trailer might try and lead you to believe, this team finished .500
hammerva Posted March 13 Posted March 13 Speaking of Boston, the Celtics one on HBO at least for the first 2 episodes has been fine. I don't know if we have learned about anything so far. I will give Simmons for bringing up the serious racism dealing with Boston and Bill Russell. I assume that given how much a shill he for the team that he would have downplayed the issues. I would assume that the 3rd episode dealing with the gap between Russell retiring and Bird getting drafted will be more than interesting.
RIPPA Posted April 7 Author Posted April 7 In promotion for the Red Sox documentary - it is revealed that during episode 4, Red Sox OF Jarren Duran battles with mental health and how he tried to commit suicide during the 2022 season https://www.mlb.com/news/jarren-duran-discusses-suicide-attempt-red-sox-netflix-docuseries Spoiler “I was already hearing it from fans,” Duran recalled to Netflix. “And what they said to me, [it was like], ‘I’ve told myself 10 times worse in the mirror.’ That was a really tough time for me. I didn’t even want to be here anymore ...” Director Greg Whiteley then interjected: “When you say 'here,' you mean 'here' with the Red Sox or 'here' on planet Earth?” Duran’s response was this: “Probably both. Yeah. Probably both. I got to a point where I was sitting in my room, I had my rifle and I had a bullet and I pulled the trigger and the gun clicked, but nothing happened. So, to this day, I think God just didn’t let me take my own life because I seriously don’t know why it didn’t go off. “I took it as a sign of, ‘I might have to be here for a reason’, so that’s when I started to look myself in the mirror after the gun didn’t go off. I was like, ‘Do I want to be here or do I not want to be here?' That happened for a reason and obviously, you’re here for a reason so let’s be the way you want to be and play you want to play and live the way you want to live." I put his description of what happened in the spoiler box. Take that a trigger warning
