twiztor Posted January 27 Posted January 27 apologies to @Elsalvajeloco but i assume the news on this league is going to be sparse and lost in the General thread, so i'm starting it's own. formerly the World Fight League (https://www.mmafighting.com/2021/12/8/22825188/wfl-executive-unveils-first-details-of-new-league-based-promotion-plans-for-2023-launch), now the Global Fight League (www.mmagfl.com) from the end of the 2024 General Thread: Quote @Kevin Wilson I'm not sure where, or if, we are discussing the Global Fight League, a new promotion launching in April. It sounds very not real to the point I looked around to at least find some type of evidence it will exist. Supposed to be 'team based' with a draft. They have no TV deal at the moment. I can't find any info on the financial backing but its owned by Darren Owen who according to his linkedin is the former COO of PFL. It feels like a stretch to me unless they have a billion dollar backer, to have that large of a roster with no revenue. But with a lot of names people will know, felt worth mentioning/monitoring. GFL held their inaugural draft Friday 1/25, so we now know the "teams". I saw some screenshots and it looked horrible with extremely off-model AI generated fighter images. Here's the rosters, spoilered for size: Spoiler Team New York: Team Los Angeles: Team Miami: Team Sao Paulo: Team London: Team Dubai: i want to point out how totally absurd some of the fighters involved in this are, but i wouldn't even know where to start. Just imagine that it's filled with every semi-recognizable name that has been released or retired from UFC or Bellator from the last 5ish years and you'd be pretty close. There's next to no chance that some of these names end of competing whatsoever. I will be surprised if we ever see one single event ever take place, and completely and absolutely gobsmacked if the first season/tournament finishes. But i guess we'll see when April rolls around. As of right now there is no date, location, or platform to watch on.
MGFanJay Posted January 27 Posted January 27 This has the potential to be MMA HUSTLE or just really sad - or both. 1
DreamBroken Posted January 27 Posted January 27 I'm down to see a lot of old favs on there if anything comes up of it. Love the idea of Weidman's retirement being a week long, they gotta get Clay Guida in there. Put a stop to Anthony Lionheart Smiths' upcoming retirement. A lot of favorites in the women's side too who could still go for sure. Rashad Evans has since said he was added to this without his consent and has since been removed from the listing; he only plans to box Rampage Jackson in April.
Elsalvajeloco Posted January 27 Posted January 27 Robelis Despaigne, Yoel Romero, and Hector Lombard are a combined 129 years old. That's absurd. If you add Tibau and JDS, it's 210. That's an average age of 42 years old. 1

The draft show had interviews with some of them talking about their signings (Tyron Woodley, Sage Northcutt, Chris Weidman, Urijah Faber, Tony Ferguson, Benson Henderson, Gegard Mousasi, Paige VanZant, Anthony Pettis, Shogun, etc) Lots of talk about "always a competitor/wanting to compete/love of the game" and/or fighters interested in rematching former opponents.
twiztor Posted February 27 Author Posted February 27 a couple weeks ago, GFL announced their first round of fights: Chris Weidman (40) vs. Luke Rockhold (40) II Yoel Romero (47) vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (43) Uriah Hall (40) vs. Douglas Lima (37) Fabricio Werdum (47) vs. Frank Mir (45) - i'm actually surprised this hadn't happened before Urijah Faber (45) vs. Renan Barao (38) III They announced these via Instagram and twitter, and as of today they are still not listed on their website. Neither is the date of a single event, which supposedly still starts in April. Word is Shogun hasn't signed the bout agreement, so GFL announcing that is suspect (although not out of character for them- like announcing Rashad Evans on a roster even though he hadn't signed with them at all)

twiztor Posted March 2 Author Posted March 2 add another fight to the announced list, with zero details: Tony Ferguson (41) vs. Dillon Danis (31) pertinent to note that Danis is currently scheduled to box KSI on 3/29.
