Dolfan in NYC Posted January 13 Posted January 13 What better way to start off this thread again than making you all look at the Robbie Williams Monkey in the collosal flop that was his biopic: 3
Mister TV Posted January 13 Posted January 13 Why would they pay that much? Even though the record companies gave him a big push Robbie Williams was never a thing in the US, then there's the monkey thing that I guess only makes sense to British people? 1

It certainly doesn't make sense to me. I had to Google "Robbie Williams" to find out he was a singer, and I still don't know why I'm looking at a picture of a monkey in the first post. Andrew POE! Posted January 13 Posted January 13 I can't believe sat in a theater for 2 hours to watch that movie. Spoiler Liam & Noel Gallagher cameos were hilarious though.

I worked in a record store circa 1997 to 1999 and I only know Robbie Williams due to getting so much promotional stuff from the record company, same with Wild Orchid which was Fergie's group before she joined Black Eyed Peas. 1
Curt McGirt Posted January 13 Posted January 13 $580,000. Holy shit. I'd laugh but you know this is only gonna make studios more reticent to take on anything out of the box at large cost, under the psychology of "if it's weird like that movie with the hit singer and that didn't sell, then this really won't". It doesn't help that the monkey is fucking scary btw 1

Technico Support Posted January 14 Posted January 14 (edited) Wait wait...was it a whole movie about Robbie Williams but he was played by a CG monkey the whole time? EDIT: holy fuck I just watched 20 seconds of the trailer and he is portrayed as a CG monkey for the length of the film. Is somebody out there trying to out-coke Don Simpson? The only Fergie group that ever mattered was Kids Incorporated. 2

I was a dedicated MTV and VH1 viewer when the Robbie Williams push was going on and I really only remember the music video where he took his skin off. 2
AxB Posted January 14 Posted January 14 He was the most famous man in England for a good few years. A good while ago, though. But when he was on top, anything he did was front page news. Like you could write an old school pen and paper bit of fanmail to him, put it in an envelope, put a stamp on it, and on the front where the address goes just write "Robbie, Stoke" and it would actually be delivered to his Mum's house. Along with the other few thousand bits of fanmail she got for him every day. Despite this being the early 2000s, when everyone already had an email address. 3
RazorbladeKiss87 Posted January 14 Posted January 14 As a pop music history fan, I love things like that. None of that translated over here. Looking at his discog now, I actually forgot it was him who sang "Angels," "Millenium," and "Rock DJ." I liked those songs. That type of fame happened to him twice really. Take That was popular overseas but unheard of here. 1
Andrew POE! Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I keep wanting a Leonard Cohen biopic and a Bryan Ferry/Brian Eno/Roxy Music biopic. Roxy Music biopic could have actors playing Eno fiddle around with electronics and Ferry picking out clothes and I would watch it. 2

All I know of him is that video and that he has a song with Kylie Minogue on GTA 5. 1
Dolfan in NYC Posted January 14 Author Posted January 14 For what it's worth, the domestic US box office on the movie last weekend was $1.1 million. Worldwide it's made $10.1 million total so far! Oh, it also cost over $100 million to make. NEVERTHELESS! (Also, the Robbie/Kylie song is a banger. Robbie contributed roughly 0% to that statement though.) 2

Apparently it was a big enough hit that each of them put the song on their own album, which is hilarious. Edited January 14 by Technico Support
Andrew POE! Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Robbie Williams also sang a Frank/Nancy Sinatra song with Nicole Kidman. I somehow knew about it from college when I would download/listen to anything on Napster.

Fuzzy Dunlop Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Don't worry if you don't know who Robbie Williams is, you're not missing much, he's a knobhead. He released a swing cover album way back when featuring covers of Mack the Knife and Mr Bojangles and whatnot and one of the reviews quipped the release of such an atrocity was a sign the Mayans were right. I have no idea what that means but it sure sounded intelligent. Anyway, yeah, he's Corden-esque levels of bellend. 3
odessasteps Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Maybe because they are from roughly the same time period, I wejrdly sometimes mix up Robbie Williams and Fatboy Slim in my head. 1

Curt McGirt Posted January 28 Posted January 28 After seeing that crazy fuck Gibson on TV last night I pray that is the biggest bomb of his career. Man, you were Mad Max once, dude. Now you're just mad. 1

I'm guessing it's a reference to the 2012 panic over the Mayan calendar allegedly "ending" in 2012 so that means the world is going to end.
