Wrestling Observer/Meltzer Ominbus Thread

I don't think a most valuable fighter is someone who gives up a championship after a fight he didnt do well in

I don't know the exact criteria, but I think most valuable fighter is basically the biggest draw. The only two options are GSP and Anderson Silva. Hell, the only two options since Brock went down with diverticulitis were those two. And now, Ronda is going to probably win that award based on what Dave said on the show. I have no problem with that at all if that's the criteria, but Cain winning Most Outstanding is a little out there unless you believe Weidman won two flukes. Even as the most ardent Anderson Silva fan, I have to say those wins were pretty decisive.

surprised Velasquez was Most Outstanding Fighter.

Doesn't make sense to me either. Velasquez beat two guys he already dominated a year prior. Weidman beat arguably the best fighter in the history of the sport TWICE.

Only once during the voting timeframe.

That's a shitty timeframe then.

The case has always been made that no matter when the deadline is, the majority of the ballots show up at the end of the deadline.  If you go December to December and have the deadline in early January, you get the results now.  You go January to January, the ballots show up around now, and the results come out in mid-February, and nobody gives a shit about 2013 in February.

BTW, the Observer Radio about the awards has two of my new favorite Bryan and Dave moments:  first Bryan trying to convince everyone that THE MIZ was voted the Wrestler of the Year! after Dave had just spent two-three minutes trashing him, and then Bryan not understanding how anyone could have voted Daniel Bryan "Best Box Office Draw" and Dave countered with "Only one person did.  That's not THAT many."

MMA is a little different. The late December show was the de facto Wrestlemania big show for the UFC in 2013. If you wanna skew votes wildly, including the 2012 UFC NYE show and not the 2013 one would be the way to do it. You wouldn't do that with Wrestlemania because I would imagine that is very integral to the voting. The same would go for the 1/4 New Japan Tokyo Dome show.

From the Observer:

Cain Velasquez, 32, won more based on timing than anything else

Yeah, that's dumb as shit.

It's ridiculous that the Shield vs Hell No &Ryback match from TLC and the Cena-Punk match from Raw aren't on the MOTY list. Both of those were incredible IMO.

Co-signed on Shield vs Hell No/Ryback. But, as was true in my case as well, I think it probably just got lost in the shuffle.

That conversation was amazing. Alvarez made a good point. Even if you are the biggest Daniel Bryan fan in the world, why the hell would you ever buy one of his t-shirts? They are terrible. Dave did discuss ratings and apparently Cena and Triple H are the two who move the needle but again.. They both agreed that Bryan has never really been given a shot as THE guy..

It was an interesting conversation. Big Dave put some asses in the seats on RAW but do I think he will sustain that interest? Nah.
