Wrestling Observer/Meltzer Ominbus Thread

I gave Dave crap about that this morning, but looking back on it Bryan sort of set Dave up to fail on that one by mentioning Playstation 3 & 4. Dave probably assumed that was what everyone was talking about when mentioning a gaming system with a "1" not having it as an available app at launch.

Because, really, what kind of idiotic company would go backwards when numbering their gaming systems...

Out of all of that, the story I most want to hear is what Dave was doing out in Tokyo until 4am. This is where we'd have a scene with Dave playing for his organs with the Yakuza.

I demand a wacky fish-out-of-water comedy about an American journalist who gets lost in Tokyo on the early morning hours and has all sorts of encounters with eccentric, vaguely disreputable characters (i.e., indy wrestlers) as well as the local Yakuza (i.e., he goes to a New Japan show).

Dave can be played by John Cusack.

Tokyo Voice by Jack Adlestein is your best bet. It's a great book and a real sordid, horrifying look at the Japanese sex industry.

I listened to Dave and Bryan's coverage of the network annoucment inculding the bonus bits with interview with Stone Cold, Cena, HBK etc. Two points, it would was very cool to hear Dave interacting with the lot of the top guys and the other "journalists" in Dave's group were something else. Highlights incudle some journalist gushing over how the network costs a quarter a day and what an amazing deal it was with a WWE exec. I think the same guy also had some strange interaction with Austin where he kept on going on about how the network will FINALLY give people a chance to see how hard superstars work.

Nothing amuses me more than Dave starting the show complaining how busy he is and then talking about the Nevada Athletic Commissioner resigning (though to be fair - that was Alvarez's fault for asking about it)

A revolting story from Meltz' Luis "Arriba" Martinez obituary.

In the late 70s, when the Detroit territory was on its downswing, Martinez was still headlining at around the age of 55 against Sheik, who was about the same age. In a main event in Dayton for Sheik’s U.S. title when Martinez arrived 90 minutes after the show had started, with them making plans, figuring he was a no-show, and showed up saying he had a bad stomach flu. He was also drunk by that point. Martinez asked Sheik to take it easy on him in this match, not wanting to take any slams or backdrops because he was so sick. They did the usual Sheik match. Sheik carved up Martinez with a pencil and was ready for Martinez to take the pencil to make his comeback, but he didn’t. Sheik threw him out of the ring. Martinez then fell dead asleep in the middle of the match. Manager Dave Drason kicked Martinez as hard as he could, trying to wake him up before Sheik found out and really got mad. He crawled into the ring and Sheik wanted him to make a comeback. So he threw him out of the ring again. Martinez rolled under the ring, and went back to sleep. Sheik found out, and was furious. He went under the ring and started punching Martinez. This woke Martinez up, who started punching back. Sheik was so mad he bodyslammed him a few times. Martinez did the “Arriba” so he woke up to do his comeback, and got Sheik in his Indian deathlock finisher. At that point Martinez developed the worst case of diarrhea in the ring. Sheik ended up covered in the stuff and ran from the ring. He washed himself off, came back to the ring, and did the planned finish.

I'd have Daniel Bryan for Wrestler of the Year and Most Outstanding. Interesting to see which of the Tanahashi/Okada matches came out on top. I'd have King of Pro-Wrestling over Invasion Attack. Happy the Wrestle Kingdom 7 match didn't win, it's their worst big match. Totally disagree with Melendez/Sanchez getting MMA Fight of the Year, surprised Velasquez was Most Outstanding Fighter.

I usually only get print.

I subbed for a month online to get digital copies of the classic issues i have in boxes in storage. Easier to do research from digital versions.

Plus, a few observer radio shows i figures would help my research (ross, cornette, scott williams).

The answer might be obvious, so I apologize. But why was Ambrose omitted from Tag Team of the Year? They had way more quality six-man tags then plain R&R vs _________ matches, wouldn't that entitle Ambrose for nomination with the group? Or, is it limited to only two members of a faction?

It's kinda silly that the WWF never won promotion of the year until 1999. I mean, looking back...Jesus...that stuff is nearly unwatchable. 1997, 1998, and 2000 were the best years of the Attitude, but 1999 was when Russo went off the rails.

I guess no one really likes voting for the Empire, though.

Edit: not debating it should have won other years over other promotions, but of all the times to win...though they also won, deservedly, in 2000.

surprised Velasquez was Most Outstanding Fighter.

Doesn't make sense to me either. Velasquez beat two guys he already dominated a year prior. Weidman beat arguably the best fighter in the history of the sport TWICE.
