What makes it a bad take? I can't read the article since it's behind a paywall. There's more to being a great baserunner than stealing a ton of bases at an 80.7% success rate.

I think you could make the argument he's the most prolific baserunner but not necessarily the most successful. I'd need to number crunch Rickey vs Coleman vs Maury Willis and whomever else in the conversation.

But I don't see that from someone like Mushnick or Murray Chass.

Again note the term that Mushnick used - baserunner. Being a great baserunner involves taking extra bases and so on, not just stealing bases. I'm sure, without reading the article, that that is the point Mushnick is making.

To your point, Maury Wills was not very good. He succeeded 74% of the time on steal attempts, which is pretty terrible. The one year he was really good was his record 104 steal season where he was at almost 90%.

That is the summary of the article via Awful Announcing. As a heads up - they clearly disagree with Mushnick (which isn't surprising)

It appears (without giving the New York Post more clicks) that Mushnick - besides doing his usual bit of shitting on someone after they died - is saying that Rickey sucked because he purposely only got singles so he could inflate his steal stats and that he clearly wasn't the greatest because he played for some many different teams.

It is also clear (just from the snippets posted) that Mushnick never liked Rickey and thinks he is overrated (he thinks Lou Brock is the greatest "baserunner" of all time)

I should also note that it seems like everyone in these pieces is not distinguishing the difference between base runner vs base stealing and that it is all getting lumped in under the umbrella of "running"

Teoscar Hernandez returns to the Dodgers

3 years, $66 million with a 15 million team option for a 4th year

And of course there is deferred money - around $23 million is deferred

Posted

BTW - something I hadn't thought about but Jeff Passan tossed in at the end of the Hernandez story

One of the reasons players are also willing to accept deferred money to play for the Dodgers is that it lowers their own tax burden in the state of California (It applies it all states but since the tax rate is so high in CA it is especially becoming common for players in that state)

Apparently legislation was introduced to Congress to close the loophole on deferred money to tax payers but it doesn't seem to have gone anywhere (It was introduced in April specifically citing the Ohtani contract as the reason why since he avoided nearly $90 million in taxes by deferring money)

Ugh.  There's so much stupid in this that I don't even know where to start.  So I ... won't.

Surprised he didn't accuse Rickey of being on the juice.

I guess he will also criticize Ichiro for hitting too many singles at some point.

That's a somewhat legit criticism. Ichiro was criticized a lot during his career for slapping singles instead of trying to drive the ball despite showing good power in BP.

Walker Buehler's deal with the Red Sox does contain a mutual option for next season ($25 million)

One would assume Buehler is gonna rent in the Boston area

Lenny Randle passed away at the age of 75

Randle is pretty much known for one of two things

Getting on his hands and knees and trying to blow a fair ball foul

or

Beating the shit of his manager (Frank Lucchesi) in Texas after losing his starting job (He got hit with battery charges that he plead no contest to and then was traded to the Mets)

Well things are getting messy (messier) in San Diego

Sheel Seidler - Peter Seidler's widow - is suing Peter's brothers for control of the team

Quote

Sheel Seidler, the widow of late San Diego Padres chairman Peter Seidler, sued two of his brothers Monday in an attempt to become the team's control person.

In a complaint filed in Texas probate court, Sheel Seidler claims she and her three children have been "effectively ostracized" from the organization since Peter Seidler's death 14 months ago. The suit names Robert and Matthew Seidler as defendants, accusing the brothers of "fiduciary breaches of trust, fraud, conversion and egregious acts of self-dealing" in their roles as trustees and executors of Peter Seidler's estate.

The Padres announced Dec. 21 that Peter's oldest brother, John Seidler, would become the team's control person, which Sheel opposed and claims went against her late husband's wishes.

In a statement, Sheel called her complaint "a very last resort" to "protect my family and to continue to carry out Peter's legacy."

"[A]s the holder of the largest individual ownership stake in the San Diego Padres, and the sole beneficiary of the Seidler Trusts, which possesses exclusive rights with respect to control of the franchise, I am seeking to be named the control person for the Padres," Sheel Seidler wrote as part of her statement.

A spokesperson for the Padres declined to comment, citing the team's stance regarding pending legal matters. Representatives for Robert and Matthew Seidler could not immediately be reached for comment. A Major League Baseball official also declined comment.

Peter Seidler, a two-time cancer survivor, died from complications of an infection on Nov. 14, 2023, leaving behind Sheel and their children, now ages 4, 9 and 11. Eric Kutsenda, a longtime friend and business partner, was named interim control person before essentially turning responsibilities over to John Seidler 13 months later.

Sheel Seidler's complaint claims assurances from Peter's brothers that they would act for the benefit of Sheel and the children have "shown to be hollow" in the wake of his death.

Matthew and Robert Seidler "not only disregarded the clear terms and purpose of the will and trust instrument that Peter created, but they also have intentionally schemed to take for themselves the estate and Seidler trusts' value rights and assets," the complaint states. "They have done so by misleading Sheel, engaging in conflicted transactions and egregious acts of self-dealing, and when Sheel began expressing concern and questioning their actions, they responded by demeaning and attempting to intimidate her -- including by using trust assets to pay lawyers to threaten her into submission and silence."

"They are trying to erase Peter's vision and legacy," another part of the complaint reads, "as well as falsely cast themselves as Peter's true heirs."

Fun fact, Miami has currently spent the least of any team on free agents.

So far, they've spent $0.  They lost 100 games last year.
