AEW - AUGUST 2024

Recommended Posts

"As a fan of the New Japan product, I would love to see Zack Sabre win the G1 and go on to become IWGP World Heavyweight Champion,” Bryan Danielson said. “If you were to ask me whose matches I enjoy the most and what personalities I enjoy the most in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, it’s Zack Sabre Jr.

“I don’t know the business metrics and all that kind of stuff. But his interviews are the most compelling to me, and in a very real way. He’s the guy I enjoy watching the most.”

I'm with you, Bryan Danielson. Zack Sabre Jr should have had this big push years ago and won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.

Because for every Orange Cassidy, there are 40 Warhorses, Dan the Dads, Danhausens, etc...meme wrestlers who don't bring much more to the table than a cute gimmick to be shared on social media.  Not to say there's no place for it, but a workrate company might not be it.

Seeing all those names together really hammers your point.  Especially, since they’d all be competing for roughly the same demographic on shows where the real estate of tv time is gobbled up by work rate guys.

But AEW isn’t that old.  There can be an ebb and flow or shifting of tonal gears to provide variety and material storytelling elements to really sell the show.  And I still think even 5 years in the shows are still defining themselves in a way the MNR doesn’t have to.

So I get why the thought of work rate kind of eclipses the sports entertainment aspects both in intention and execution.

But IIRC danhausen and Cassidy are/were big merch sellers and really easy to “go as for Halloween” because kids liked them a lot. Market value attributes that should generate revenue. Or so I’d assume anyway.  Business chat is a bit above my pay grade but it made sense to me to keep a guy around that onscreen they were hyping as this big merch seller.

There's definitely a handshake deal where Danhausen is not getting used until his contract is up, but is allowed to do as many indys without approval as he wants. Because that dude is booked up like crazy. 2 or 3 shots a week. Way more than a normal AEW guy is allowed to take. He also does some anti-AEW vague tweeting.

Not taking sides. Don't have enough info to know who I feel is in the right. But he's def not injured. He's working way more now than at any other point during his AEW tenure.

Danhausen was always a weird fit for AEW. As @Technico Support mentioned, he really doesn’t have a “next gear” that he can go to after the comedy stops in the same way Orange Cassidy does (who has like 5 extra gears). I find his act amusing (I’m a sucker for a silly voice, mostly), but there was a very low ceiling for how far he could get in a work rate promotion like AEW.

And whether it’s true or not, he definitely gives off passive-aggressive malcontent vibes. So I could imagine why someone might be inclined to give up on finding ways to work him into the show and just send him home.

I'm not sure his gimmick is a WWE fit. Seems like a concept they wouldn't really get behind. He's self described it as basically a demon possessing Conan O'Brian lol. I think he's def worthy of an AEW spot. Wacky comedy relief between work rate stuff is always welcomed as a pallet cleanser (to me at least).

I wonder if his close friendship with Punk has soured his chances more than anything. They knew who and what he was when they signed him. But his unwavering allegiance to Punk has to be factoring in.

At last year's All In, loads of people were wearing Danhausen shirts. Like he was probably the most popular wrestler in the stadium in terms of merch worn. He wasn't on the show, and I'm pretty sure hadn't even wrestled in the UK in his career to that point (he has done a couple of times since then).

If they are holding him off for a surprise return, it's going to be a bloody big surprise because everyone is pretty much assuming his AEW run is over.

If he's waiting out his contract so he can go and sign for WWE, that's going to be interesting. Presumably this regime is going to be a lot more accepting of the idea that the best way to use Danhausen is to let him be Danhausen. Vince, he would be taking the facepaint off him and giving him some other overbearing, ill-fitting gimmick to work with instead.

Danhausen might be one of those fringe cases where it makes more sense for him to stay independent and keep a bigger chunk of his merch money.

I definitely agree with this, because it feels like Danhausen is more of a "Personality who wrestles" as opposed to a "wrestling personality"

To be clear I am strongly in favor of him signing with WWE because the inevitable endpoint of his indie career is he and his wife creating some kind of insufferable burlesque/wrestling concept show and we can't allow that to happen.

Lucha Va Voom has been a thing for quite a while and works out pretty well. I still fondly remember when they randomly came to Baltimore. Hipsters and PBRs as far one can see but man that was fun.

That said if they knew what they were doing I'd be cool with Danhausen and his wife giving it a go.

Now I'm curious how many promotions do this around the country already then. I remember having to explain to my aunt that I couldn't take my nephews to this wrestling show. Of course I saw kids at the damn show.

Believe me, I'm aware and I'm bummed that the closest lucha to me is something I'm not interested in.

I was being too curmudgeonly; I certainly got no beef with anybody enjoying it.  But burlesque just isn't my thing and most attempts to add whimsy to wrestling feel forced.  Different strokes to move the world and all that.

Danhausen's wife is a Burlesque dancer, her name is Lou Lou la douchesse De Riere. Apparently she's a decent sized name within that world.

There is Montana Drag Wrestling- where a friend of mine has one of the tag team belts.

Trying to come up with some likely matches for All Out since my crew hasn’t missed one yet. Mostly drawing a blank and without becoming the Charlie Day meme we’ve deduced a possible main event of Danielson/Okada 2. MJF/Garcia is likely if Danny stays with AEW. No idea what the future plan is for Ospreay and Swerve, maybe they have a rematch here? If Darby straps up in London maybe he has a title defense?
