AEW - AUGUST 2024

Recommended Posts

lmao, apparently AEW offered Kevin Kelly severance when they fired him but he never signed and returned the form and they withdrew the offer (also probably because of all the, you know, disparagement he did)

So he managed to get fired on his day off and fumble a bag after getting fired.  Truly a generational talent in being a dumbfuck online.

Apparently, those in WWE think that AEW overpaid for Strickland and Garcia, and that them getting deals "above market value" is bad for the business.

"But, but, we can't lowball them if you pay them what they're actually worth!"

It isn't bad for the business, it's just bad for business. To them, at least.

I’m so very glad Nana is getting his moment. He was so great in ROH it was a shame that it took such a long time for him to get his recognition and paid for being the talent he is.

it’s a shame that Jimmy Rave didn’t get to be there with him.

Personally, I’ll cut Britt some slack for slowing down in-ring. Sounds like she’s coming back from some really serious health issues. That can take some time to recover from and look like your old self.

Yeah, look how long it took Dalton Castle, for example, to regain his form after the serious back injury. Thunder Rosa, too! And Curt Hennig if you want to go further back for examples.

In today's Observer:

WWE allegedly made a play for Swerve & Nana before their deal was agreed to. Daniel Garcia is also believed to have re-signed.

Apparently, those in WWE think that AEW overpaid for Strickland and Garcia, and that them getting deals "above market value" is bad for the business.

Fuck Triple H and his corporate overlords.

Ha. I should’ve known that they lost some signings to AEW when they had Kevin Owens floating that “my contract is coming up next year” story to SI this week. Gotta start manufacturing the next signing “win” over AEW now lol.

And even then, Dalton was still wearing that big ass brace as recently as his last match. I'm a big fan of Dalton's act and obviously really miss getting to see him on TV (especially lately, because I think there could've been gold in that Outrunners pairing) but I'm thankful he's got the opportunity to be healing and resting up for the remainder of the year.

One of the best things to come from AEW? Prince Nana getting his flowers. Liked Prince Nana ever since Ring of Honour and the Embassy.

I’m not even sure it’s arguable at this point that the Nana dance is a major part of Swerve finally getting over and also being able to be an edgy face.

Make the Owen Hart tournament for the tag teams this year, ya bastards! The division needs a shot in the ass and maybe this would help...

as long as they don't stick the winners in the "High Energy" gear. or call them the "NEW New Foundation".

Just thought of a great idea: Film a skit of MJF going to pawn shops throughout Buffalo to find his ring Garcia pawned.

I love this idea - there's so much you could do with that. AEW doesn't do a ton of "third place" vignettes outside the arena or locker room, so despite it's sports-entertainness, I think this would be awesome. I think it would be really interesting to see MJF being an asshole while forced to interact with "lowly" civilians as opposed to other wrestlers - we don't really get that much outside of in-character moments during pods/interviews, so i'd imagine it would feel pretty fresh for the vast majority of the TV audience, too.

MJF is the one guy I’m ok with getting some heavy WWE skits. It worked well with the Brochachos (well, for me it did) and I think the Buffalo pawn shop idea is genius.

Agreed - stuff like that, or Le Dinner Debonaire, whether you liked it or you didn't, you can't deny the guy shows an aptitude for it. Maybe even moreso than traditional promos - he obviously shines there too, but it's well-worn territory at this point to talk about how he goes to certain wells too often, the double edged sword of creative freedom, yada yada.

Isn’t there some kind of theory out there that WWE negotiated with some of these free agents just to drive up the price TK was going to pay them? The people that were really not going there, like Okada and Mercedes, notably?

I mean, why that would matter to a company with seemingly limitless resources? I dunno.

We’re talking about the company that cut a ton of people during a pandemic while they were making record profits. And makes a practice of pulling undercard talent when they’re close to going over their downside guarantee.

Lowballing people is what they do.

And they’ve been able to get away with it without any significant pushback for 20 years. They are BIG MAD that somebody else is having a say in what a wrestler’s market value is.

Across the other major American Sports Leagues, the revenue split between ownership and talent is generally kept at around the 50/50 mark. In the WWE, it's more like 90/10. Every contracted WWE wrestler is hideously underpaid.

Then again, those other sports leagues, the NFL and NBA and MLB and so on, they're unionised.

Arguing that another company paying someone more than they would hurts the business as a whole.  Every time I think WWE can’t sink any lower, they find another sub basement.  “Now WE have to pay these interchangeable bags of meat more?  God dammit!”
