AEW TV - 7/17 - 7/23/2024 - Guess What... It's Gonna Be May!

Recommended Posts

That gets Luchasaurus to holding 3 belts now - Tag, Trios, TNT and Christian to two (TNT, Trios)

Yikes, I'm not sure what they're doing with Skye these days (So... she's just good again?) but hope that's not too serious.

I know the emphasis is supposed to be on Hologram but man Gringo Loco was the star of that match for me.  It helps they have worked so many times before.   Also there is a reason why Gringo is called the Base God

The red metalflake parts in Gringo's costume made me wonder how many bar stools and bicycle seats had to die to make it, but it kind of slaps nonetheless

Man, Night One of the G1 was great. An incredibly solid show top to bottom, with violence, action, variety, and just enough surprises in how it was booked. ZSJ vs GOK was particularly great, with a unique takedown exchange that popped me hard. The time flew by like it was an AEW PPV. And after Rampage and Night One yesterday, and Collision this morning, I am still hyped for Night Two.

BUT

There was one very disappointing match.

Spoiler

Surprise! It was the EVIL match! Who could have seen that one coming? The first 85% was actually excellent, and there was a chair spot that was full-on insane. But the ending, OF COURSE, was the usual HOT bullshit.

The one regrettable stain on an otherwise pristine tapestry of a show.

"Actually excellent matches with predictable, massively disappointing, bullshit endings" seemed to be a deliberate theme of tonight's Collision. It happened THREE times. Once is really more than enough. I REALLY miss the AEW that almost always featured clean finishes.

Oh well.

Opener was f'n HAWT. And an "Only in AEW" match. As long as they keep rolling out stuff like Darby vs Taurus I am going to keep getting over my little disappointments and coming back for more. Presumably. Eventually WWE disappointed me enough times that I just gave up completely. I don't see that happening with AEW, though.

We all hope Blue is OK. No doubt in my mind about that.

HarryArchieGus hit the nail on the head w/r/t the E-Sports Arena! That felt like a PERFECT-sized venue for this show. Loved the hard cam shooting up the ramp. Loved the more intimate feel.

I have ZERO business acumen but I would *URGE* AEW to consider running more venues this size, charging reasonable prices for non-ringside seats, providing plentiful merch and refreshment opportunities for the live crowd, and thereby restoring the warm community feel that has sadly slipped away over the past couple of years.

Atmosphere is everything. This crowd LOVED Juicey Boy. It MADE the match. I am sure the venue added to that tremendously. Makes the Collision(s) louder!

Trimmed beard Dash looks like a different (less interesting) person. Wardlow/Manbun effect.

Ishii/Roddy was the most "actually excellent match with a predictable, massively disappointing, bullshit ending" of the night for me. Otherwise, though, it was EXACTLY what I was hoping for when it was announced.

Great call bringing in Gringo Loco to make your debuting luchadore look like a million bucks!

Surely I cannot be the only one hoping Hologram would use the 3D as a finisher. LOVED the airplane spin, though.

Dustin/Von Erichs was too sweet. But, I gotta be honest... I coulda used a little more COWbell.

I am SURE that someone backstage was furiously insisting they call it a "LumberJILL" match. (Get it? Hahaha! LumberJILL) and I am SO GLAD that A) they didn't go there and B) Nigel managed to resist the temptation to go there, as well.

(EDIT: According to tbarrie, Nigel may have actually gone there. Dammit, Nigel! I am at the point of NEEDING to mentally tune Nigel out in order to enjoy the matches, so I can see how I might have missed it. I complain about Nigel A LOT and I often (here and elsewhere) gets the "they are building to him vs Bryan at Wembley" explanation. That might very well have gone a LONG way toward justifying Nigel's tired, unfunny, disingenuous heel commentator shtick. Those were great matches, back.in the day.

Oh well).

(the lumberjack match was) Another "liked the match/was bummed out by the ending" scenario.

Rosa's hat was AMAZING.

G1 Night Two matches include Boltin vs Henare, Gabe Kidd vs GOK, Shota vs Shingo, and Naito vs ZSJ.

Spoiler

Me:HOT matches::Charlie Brown:Lucy holding the football

My only other thought, and I’m pretty sure it was from tonight. If the rules of The Conglomeration are “you want to conglomerate” and “you’re not a shithead”,  then my name is John aka JLowe and I’m a member of The Conglomeration!

I think Nigel did go there once, though.

I don't know, part of me perversely hopes that Deonna just keeps cheaply beating Thunder Rosa forever.

But given the way the commentators were playing up that Taya Valkyrie was the one who gave Deonna the weapon, I suspect we're moving on to Thunder vs Taya and Deonna... doing something else. If not, I'm not sure what the point of this match was. What did it establish that the first two didn't? It doesn't help that it was the weakest of the three quality-wise as well.

Darby's gonna be crippled by "years and years from now."

Darby/Mortos ruled of course. Hate to see Skye go down, was looking forward to her and Shida. Did like Shida's fired up promo later on, setting up her vs Britt for Dynamite. Always loved their matches together.

I liked Deonna/Thunder. Was surprised to see Deonna win again but I can dig a Deonna/Taya alliance. Two of my favorite  former knockout champs.

Fun trios main event. I thought for sure House of Black was getting involved somewhere but surprisingly nothing. Christian celebrating by holding all three titles himself was hilarious.

edit: Forgot to mention, sad that they have changed the Collision theme away from the Elton classic.

After the match, as Christian was in the ring with all three of the trios belts, the lights flickered a bit, and it was mentioned on commentary.

Foreshadowing.

I like the size of Esports Stadium, but I was feeling a little more Impact Zone than Hammerstein Ballroom for my likiing. Unless it's MSG or the Burt Flickinger Center in Buffalo, I'm rarely a fan of shooting up the ramp. The intimate audience wasn't quite Banana, but they seemed ready to offer their support.

Ugh, out with Elton in with more buttrock-adjacent. Awful. Moving along, the Darby v Mortos opener was every bit as thrilling as I hoped it could be. I sometimes wish I could redesign the Beast to fit a more reasonable TV presentation. And then push him. The post match Darby promo began a night of incredibly clumsy mic work. So wait, he likes the Bucks? Allin was all over the place, but I did like his confidence. The Assclaimed promo was their usual Terrible. These guys can't do anything right anymore. At least it was short. Skye v Shida was unfortunate. AEW really needs to have an extra pre-tape ready to cut away to in these always potential rough situations. Best wishes to Blue who's had a really nice run since the heel turn. The Shida promo calling out Baker was not exactly great TV. Let Hiraku speak Japanese, pre-tape and subtitle it - how is WWE the more cultured promotion on this matter? The Lance Archer skit was the usual and comically bad. Here's an idea for heating up Lance - give him a significant win. I skimmed passed the Jericho promo. I've enjoyed some of what he's done, but this often times feels like it's being forced down our throats. I liked the Nese v Fenix match in ring. The AEW Brand multiple team members at ringside and interferring was it's usual lame. Nese is a great hand and Fenix's explosive offense was beautifully showcased. Speaking of clumsy promos, FTR deliver. Was Dax drunk? Cash ought to have done a Renee sitdown concerning the gun stuff. Here as a RaRa speech attempt it failed miserably. Cue the cheerleaders in Fast Times. I like the sentiment of a road to gold and saving the tag division, but this was easily the worst FTR promo I've ever seen. Back to the good stuff, Roddy v Ishii did not disappoint. Roddy was bumping like a goddamn maniac. Ishii seems to be having some communication issues. Every match has had crossed signals and a botch. Still, nothing here was as bad as the typical Taven/Bennett blatantly running interference for a cheap win. Part of me offers forgiveness for their protecting Ishii. The Hologram v Gringo match made for a nice debuting showcase. Gringo is about as good of a hand as you can have. With a decent TV presentation Loco could be so much more (in my mind). Snug fitting spandex is not befitting all. Hologram looked good, but the costume leaves a lot to be desired. The Kevin Von Erich promo that followed seemed intent on securing the W for clumsiest promo yet. Why is Dustin suggesting a first for Rhodes/Von Erichs since '78 when they've already teamed? I'm sentimental like everyone for Kev, but this was awkward at best. The Briscoe promo saved the show from this run of awful mic work, but I'm not sure I want Mark leaning almost political in his rethoric. Or at least reminding me of that divide. I skimmed Thunder v Deonna. I've seen enough of these two, but Purrazzo was her usual solid-great, and Rosa seemed good where needed. I'm not sure I like saddling Deonna with struggling Taya. I sense it means Purrazzo's matches will now feature Kingdom/QTV/Jarrett gang/Premiere Athletes style interference, and who the fuck wants more of that? The Patriarchy v Ass/Juice main event was strong. Austin's bump to the floor was awesome. Colton looked good here too. Christian with all three titles on Lucha's shoulders made for a nice visual, but I'm not sold on this team. Nick Wayne needs reps and a lot of development. Killswitch feels in need of a hiatus/refresh more than another title belt. This was a hit and miss show to be sure. Certainly better than  last week. The In-ring was pretty strong throughout, but the mic seemed cursed. If everyone that grabbed a mic was reported to have been high and/or drunk I'd very much believe it. I'm starting to wonder if I'm better off bypassing the B/C shows to avoid burnout? Still, wasn't going to miss the Darby v Mortos dream bout. Also points for the set-up of this show. Many of the matches were sold prior and that's appreciated.

Same here, so here are mine

1. I watched and rewatched (just to figure it out) the Skye injury and feel so bad. A single upside I can think of is that she will be a surprise entrant (maybe even with the SABU~! blackout) on a match in the future and they scoop her right into a feud.

2. Who is Hologram? Smart of them getting the best base in the fed aside from Claudio to work with him. He wasn't quite Blitzkrieg level as they made him up to be, but he'll be a fun addition.

3. Deonna and Rosa still need to be tagging. Rosa is still shaky. Heel work would let her cover that up. Actually with Taya they would be a good trio. (Oh no. That opens the idea of a women's trios title. For god's sake I hope Tony isn't reading this...) It was good seeing all the ladies out there. Abadon still needs more airtime.

4. How the fuck Mortos does what he does wearing a gigantic Halloween mask is beyond me.

I love YOU, Gordi 😉 As far as the cowbell goes, did anybody else hear it ringing constantly during that promo? And speaking of which, did anyone else get the super awful crack AEW audio team last night too? That shit was doubled up and echoing all over the place. Cut the live audio when you do backstage stuff!

Am I the only person who felt Collision looked like a packed Sinclair era ROH show and not something from AEW? It just looked small time to me.

With that said, the wrestling was great! Sucks about Skye though. I wondered if it was her knee since she wasn't able to get her other leg planted for the catch.

Two injuries to women in the span of what, 3 weeks, and both on dives that came up short.  That’s a wild coincidence.  Shida should take that middle strand dive out of her arsenal.  Jumping from a standing position in the center of a rope gives you no solid base to push off on.  She fell from there like a rock.

I vacillated between thinking that arena looked cool and thinking it looked like bad soundstage wrestling, like the XWF.

I legit lol’d at “and you can’t be a shithead!”

I’ll do my man @JLowe better re drunk watching: I forgot this was even on and got hung up watching History of Horror on AMC+.  I am lame as fuck.

I liked the feel of the E-Sports Arena, even if it looked small. An intimate studio with a good crowd is better than a 20% full basketball/hockey arena where you can't hear much.

Really feel bad for Skye who was just getting back into the TV rounds after her story with Julia got scrapped. Her leg looked like it got tangled under her pretty bad. Hopefully youth and good flexibility will keep her from needing surgery.

Hologram being someone completely fresh was a relief. Doesn't seem like a high-ceiling gimmick, but seems like a solid depth guy for AEW at least.

BCG comes across as really low-rent without Jay White, although Juice plays well as a babyface. Definitely smart to flip the belts over to the Patriarchy and emphasize that feud for HOB headed to All In. I kinda feel like TK owes HOB one for jobbing them at their hottest last year for Acclaimed to get a "feel good" moment that never went anywhere.

I had a discussion with someone elsewhere about The Beast Mortos (who I think we all agree is pretty great) asking... if you had to guess what month/year would you pick for him finally winning a match in AEW? My guess is that he'll get a win in October to set up some Halloween themed match a la Abadon, they figured they'd win on some random Rampage to heat them up for a Collision match/loss later in the year (but was too cowardly to pick when), , hopefully it happens at some point.

I watched Collision on the DVR earlier and I thought if was a really good show. Possibly one of the best ones so far. The Esports arena is a good venue and looks so much better than a dark quarter full regular arena.

Darby vs. Mortos was a great opener. Darby is by far the real face of the company. I want to see him as World champion by the end of the year.

I hope Skye didn't get hurt too bad but it just have been something to stop the match during the commercials.

Roddy vs Ishii was really good. Loved the stiffness of it

FTR cut a good promo, but I think AEW has themselves in a corner. The Acclaimed have the next title shot and FTR are looking past them as if they know the acclaimed will lose to the bucks so they can face The Bucks at Wembley. We have time before then so we'll see.

Thunder Rosa vs Parrazzo was all right. Taya vs Rosa could be a good feud.

Hologram had a great debut. Loco deserves an extra bonus for making the guy look so good.

Mark Briscoe continues to deliver promo wise.

The main event was pretty good. The Patriarchy will make good trios champions.

If I had the book, I'd let Hologram get a few more wins like the one he had against Loco, so he gets established, and then I marry him to Mortos until the end of time. Mortos needs to start squashing guys on Rampage, and getting wins over guys like Private Party and Premier Athletes.
