AEW TV - 7/10 - 7/16/2024 - Hangman-ing By A Moment

I'm glad Danielson won, Hangman's character is much more interesting if he loses from time to time.

That ending with Mariah May and Toni Storm is some of the best stuff they've ever done, incredible.

Saw some things on the Twitter saying this whole Toni Storm and Mariah May story arc is a play on the 1950 movie 'All About Eve'.   Fascinating stuff.

I see that. A little Single White Female, too (complete with cosplay)

So, the plastic horseshoes I’m reading about on Twitter.

Did they sell them as real horseshoes or was this a wink wink thing like using Legos in deathmatches?

He's done this recently with Weapons that tie to the town they are in: Hockey Pucks in Canada, Dice in Vegas, pretty sure another one and tonight horseshows for the Rodeo.

Very happy with this show as Chapter 2 on the road to All In.

I'm glad Danielson won the men's tourney. Swerve and Hangman need a lot of time apart, although I'm ok with them being the focal point of B&G. I think there's a lot more interesting stuff to do with deranged Hangman coming to his senses (ideally with the assistance of Kenny Omega) than just trying to re-capture the lightning in the bottle they got with Swerve in the Texas Death Match. As for Bryan, he absolutely deserves one last mega-show main.

The Jericho/Joe stuff was kind of silly, but the good kind of pro wrestling silly. Jericho's group has to get a little heat for the gimmick to work.

That 4-way was surprisingly good. Expected it to be more filler-y, but they all went pretty hard down the stretch. Pac vs. Ospreay isn't a direction I was expecting, but it's not a bad overachieving midcard match to hide Will in if he's not going to be the focal point of the show. I'm sure both guys consider it a high honor and the fans will eat it up, but shouldn't drain the heat out of everything else. Guess they're just gonna do MJF/Garcia straight away, even though that seemed like a big angle match that could've waited for All Out.

Good to see the women get the main, and Mariah 100% justified it with that closing angle. I said a while ago the best way for this angle to play out would be to have Mariah go the Mark Chapman/Yolanda Saldivar route. Toni has made the gimmick so big, that a psychotic superfan is really the only way to undo it. It'll be interesting to see how it plays in London, but I trust they'll make it work.

Next week's show is just stupid in a good way. Ospreay/MJF and Swerve/Okada on free TV? Even with some expected bullshit in both matches, that's pretty crazy.

If dubba j didn’t have a hand in that closing angle I’m hanging it up. That was all levels of Memphis brilliance. No tease, just straight nut cutting. Mariah and Toni were both KING SIZED.

The execution of Mariah bloodying up Toni reminded me of the Rich/Gilbert angle in Memphis.

Speaking of old school angles... not to fantasy book something, or to act pissy because a fan theory didn't pan out... but I think we all know how big of a fan TK is of Mid-South and Bill Watts style booking. Last night seemed to be set up perfectly for multiple angles to overlap and come to a head Watts-style, and it didn't happen.

Danielson vs Page, with Jarrett as an enforcer, and Nigel on commentary, because Jericho had the EVPs ban Taz from the arena. The planets and stars were all aligned.

I was totally expecting something like Page going for a chair, Jarrett stopping him, and Nigel sneaking in to low-blow on Danielson, costing him the match. That didn't happen.

How Tony Khan subverts things. We all thought Swerve Strickland vs. Will Ospreay would be at All In but he did it at Forbidden Door. We thought MJF vs. Will Ospreay would be at All In but it's next week on the 250th episode of Dynamite.

I haven't watched much Stardom in the past so I wonder if Stardom deals in bitter blood feuds or this is something that is new to Mariah May.   Given how natural she was at being a bloodthirsty maniac I am guessing not

Another missed opportunity was I really wanted Britt to finish Monés shot she left on the table.

Fuuuuuuck!  This show ruled.  I reeeeally wish Omega was in the mix right now.

It was a good idea here in the moment of cultural high awareness of diss tracks for The Acclaimed to do another video for a song.  Though I’ve liked others they’ve done more.  It’s on brand, quick, and keeps it all on screen to develop further without having to give away a match.

I recall some criticism over the Toni/Mina match at FD having a happy reconciliation as being anti-climactic.  But it makes sense more now in retrospect why that choice was made when you’ve got the real heartbreaker for this show.  What a classic angle.  Excellent use of a blade job.  And they really went for it to get it over.  Applause.

All In looking like:

AEW World Championship: Swerve Strickland vs. Bryan Danielson confirmed.

AEW Women's World ChampionshipTimeless Toni Storm vs. Mariah May confirmed.

AEW International Championship: Will Ospreay vs. PAC.

TBS Championship: Mercedes Mone vs. Dr Britt Baker.

I can see Stadium Stampede to get more talent on the card. The Elite vs. BCC perhaps.

Not plastic. You could hear them clanging around in the bag.

What are people's thoughts about this snapping Toni Storm out of her "Timeless" era? I have mixed feelings about it. I think Timeless Toni is hilarious and is some of the best character work in AEW. Its finally gotten her over after being "herself" never got her over (much) in other promotions.

But... is it a gimmick she can do forever? Is it sustainable? And if it isn't, is her own protégé beating her with her own shoe and throwing her butler off the stage enough to successfully change back to her normal self in time for Wembley? I can see both sides of the argument so its a legitimate question, but if the plan is of course to stop the gimmick at some point I don't know of a better time than before a major title match at Wembley in front of her home crowd.

Same here, and big agree on all other points. I think if I were a betting man, we'll see a "soft" phase-out where she eventually keeps the name and not much else (because alliteration is always awesome). Maybe we get lucky with Luther hanging around as a more traditional, Arn-or-Jake-style coach for a bit. Coming back as her "old self" would've had much more heft if Mariah didn't walk out to not-Barricuda this whole time, but it was too necessary to the All About Eve/SWF aspect of the story so I can't complain

I think the question of whether to change Toni really depends on what the idea is for Mariah.  If Mariah is completely ditching the Toni stuff and being what she was in Stardom then sure changing isn't a problem.  But if Mariah is still going to cosplay original Toni Storm or even more start calling herself "Timeless Mariah May" then I think you have to keep it.

Was anyone else expecting Jarrett to turn the whole match? When he revealed the ref shirt I was expecting him to el kabong Danielson with a guitar then give a fast count or something.

In a world with wrestling barbers, undead morticians, and folks cosplaying as other ethnicities, I think we can have a young lady wear olde-timey tights and talk in 1940s slang without it being that big of a deal.

This is the one time where I didn't expect that because you could see before they announced Danielson that he was doing what he could to keep it together.  I honestly wouldn't mind a face run since the other wrestlers in the group seem likeable enough.

I expected Page to win so Danielson winning was initially puzzling as I thought we'd get Page/Swerve and Danielson/Nigel.  Which has me wondering if maybe the ship has sailed on the latter.  I hope not but while I'm cool with Page/Swerve at All Out if Nigel's not doing Wembley then it might just not happen at all.
