C&P f4wonline.com:

NJPW has revealed details on this year’s G1 Climax tournament.

The tournament, which begins on July 20, will return to a 20-man A & B block format. The participants will be revealed during the New Japan Soul tour on June 16. However, only eighteen of the twenty participants will be announced. A participant selection tournament will determine the final slot of both blocks, with the finals of that tournament taking place on July 5.

Another change to this year’s tournament is how the block champions will be determined. NJPW’s website writes:

"This year though, it will be the top three finishers that advance. Second and third place finishers will face off in Makuhari August 15, with the top point scorer receiving a bye to Ryogoku August 17. There, semifinals will determine an overall winner for each block, to compete in the grand final August 18."

---

Glad the smaller blocks are back. Unsure who'll win this year without Kazuchika Okada in. No Will Ospreay either.

If Mox is holding the title until WK I think Shota wins this year even if Mox drops the belt I think Shota has a good chance. I could see a possibility of Jake Lee winning as an outsider and facing Naito at the dome as a possibility outside that I think Shota or Tsuji are real possible winners. ZSJ could have an outside shot too.

Thank god they’re going back to the 20-man, two bracket field. I even like the idea of the play-In tournament so that the chaff that’s been clogging up the tournament for the past several years can still feel like they’re part of it. Maybe you could even build a nice Cinderella story for the one of those guys coming out of it.

And yeah it’s gotta be Shota or Tsuji. It’s time to pick somebody and go all in on them.

Meltzer:

– They announced they are going back to prior years in G-1 this year. It’s back to 20 wrestlers in two blocks instead of 24 in four blocks.  That’s harder on the talent as they will  have nine tournament matches rather than five before the finals.  Also, the bouts will be back to a 30:00 time limit rathan than 20:00.  The tournament starts on 7/20.

Glad the twenty wrestlers two blocks field and 30:00 time limit are back.

I'd go with Zack Sabre Jr to win the G1 Climax, he's my first choice by far then Yota Tsuji or Shota Umino.

Please give me Jake Lee-Naito.

I hope there's some freelancers and AEW involvement. Great getting Eddie Kingston last year. Doubt Danielson as he said his time has passed. Claudio is my first choice.

My gut feel is there will be 1 x AEW/ROH representative and 1 x NOAH representative (Jake Lee I'd guess). Would love to see Nakajima turn up over Jake though.

I also think the winner will be one of Shota, Tsuji or Zack. If Mox retains at Forbidden Door I'd say he holds until the Dome and drops to a G1 winning Shota. If Naito wins, then either Tsuji or Zack win.

Agree it has to be one of Shota Umino, Yota Tsuji or Zack Sabre Jr, I'd go with ZSJ. Agree the winner of IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Jon Moxley vs. Tetsuya Naito at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2024 heads into NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 19 as IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. I think Tetsuya Naito regains there.

First G1 Climax since 2011 without Kazuchika Okada. I hope Hiroshi Tanahashi doesn't make it as he's shot and it sucks to see.

I fully expect Tanahashi to be in the G1 and for him to have to withdraw due to injury

Two outsiders in the G1: Jake Lee and Konosuke Takeshita

Yes please.

No real surprises (predicted Jake, had a hunch it'd either be Takeshita or Kyle Fletcher for the AEW spot) but the inner Taichi mark within me is sad (no way anyone but Boltin is winning that Block B mini tournament).

Block A on paper seems more interesting despite EVIL being in it. Hoping Ishii can get through but think it will be Newman

Takeshita is a great choice for this, and it's something he really needs right now.  I could actually see both him and Jake Lee somehow being factored into Wrestle Kingdom coming out of this.  Not in terms of either one winning the thing, but just getting fans excited with (hopefully) hot angles leading to future matchups.  A much more effective use of outside talent than Nemeth and Riddle.  (I liked Nemeth, but still...)

This might be the first G1 Climax in years depending on results without Hiroshi Tanahashi, Tomohiro Ishii and Yano who are G1 Climax staples.

I saw something on Twitter about Jake Lee disbanding GLG at Budokan a week before the G1, which might fuel some of those rumours about him being more involved with New Japan going forward.

Jake vs EVIL is going to be interesting, just for the collective meltdown on social media.
