Double or Nothing VI - 5/26/2024

Recommended Posts

COVID era Double or Nothing with no crowd was better than this show.

Jack Perry needs to send CM Punk a thank you card.

Mercedes is still the most overrated women’s wrestler in the past 10 years. Fight me. Give me a Stat, Kamille & Megan Bayne trio though.

I thought that was Ospreay’s worst match in AEW so far, but it was still really good. Insane how over he is, honestly.

Why was Swerve cosplaying a PS2 video game? /s

Not sure where I want to begin with this because it was a hell of a show.... tremendous show but they crammed SO MUCH in here man.   I'll start with the matches..

I felt Ospreay vs. Roddy,  Toni Storm vs. Serena Deeb,  Mercedes vs. Willow and Takeshita vs. Moxley were all very good matches, maybe even great.

They all had great crowd reactions too...

Now on to Anarchy in the Arena.  It was too much.  There was some fun stuff in there.  There was some really dumb stuff in there.  If you have 20 things you want to do on a whiteboard drawn out,  maybe trim that number down to 5 or 6?  That would be my main complaint with it.

Great to see MJF back too but that probably could have been kept for Dynamite and that way the show time could have been trimmed by about 20 minutes.

This was my least favourite AEW PPV in 2024.

I enjoyed the hell out of this show. I think it may have been my favorite ppv of the year thus far.

Genuinely glad you did. Tired as fuck too which doesn't help. 01:00-05:35 PPV over here.

Lastly,  back to Mercedes and Willow.  Aside from Roddy and Ospreay this match had the best crowd reactions by far and that's why they brought Mercedes in.  The women's division has a more star power and for her wrestling her first match in over a year.... it was really fucking good.   She bumped like a maniac and made Willow look like a million bucks.  She also brought some of that limb work I love so much.  Great stuff.

I missed a great deal of this... none of the stuff I needed to see, though. To keep it short because everyone is tired:

- I came in during the six-man and there was the "everyone hits each other and falls down" spot before my eyes, first thing. I asked if they had to flip a coin to see who got to use it, this or the triple threat.

- The Deeb/Storm match just didn't grab me because... well, of Deeb. It's the wrong face/heel outlook. Good finish though, and a finish that would/could finish ANY match.

- Orange vs. Trent? had the nice Ode to Albini with the return of the Pixies song that he engineered for them. It was a very, very good straight wrestling match instead of the bloodbath we could have had. Trent quitting will be... hell, I dunno.

- FTW was silly and fun. Jericho took a big big suplex at one point like he was Kobashi wanting to remove his vertebrae through the flesh. The dice couldn't have been fun with that either. Shibata got a trash can put on him again but no Can-Man Attack 😞 Let Jericho keep the junk title, he has nothing better to do.

- Moxley/Takeshita was nothing if not hard-hitting, brutal on Mox's arm. Poor finish but I'll let others extrapolate on that.

- Edge vs. Black wimped out on the wire (I expected a whole cage of BW like that trampoline but I guess only the matches with Onita vs. Tenryu and Hayabusa will ever have that. *sigh*) but they found ways of making it work anyway. Edge REALLY REALLY REALLY fucked up not just splashing Black. Dude, like Shane Douglas said about the belt DDT that broke Pitbull Anthony's neck, "pancake flat". Do not land like you are Randy Savage doing an axehandle from fucking 15 feet in the air. And then what does he do? Anyway, they bled buckets, Gangrel showed up and looked to be in awesome shape cause I figured he'd be like 400 lbs., hopefully Edge's knees aren't completely blown out now. It was good.

- Took a shower during the start of Mone/Nightingale because I didn't care enough. Of course Mone won. I still don't like her. Poor Best Friends. Bonus points to Stokely for both 1. Slowly turning into Gary Hart, and 2. Cosplaying as the pimp from Demons tonight. "SMASH EVERYTHING SMASH EVERYTHING SMASH EVERYTHING!!!"

- Strickland vs. Cage was the fuckin' bomb! Great match. Nobody got the Warriors reference because even Taz said it was old. Paul Turner had his work cut out for him in this one but it still ruled.

- God, the main was long. Matsunaga vs. Pogo in a coffin death match was more dangerous, had fire, and was better in eight minutes than this. But it was also more goofy fun, with "The Final Countdown" having TWO iconic chorus moments as first Darby did the coffin drop and second they caught Danielson in a long shot having everybody YES for him. And they actually set somebody on fire. Okada was having a blast which was maybe the funnest part. "THIS ISA RAINMAKAH DRIVE!"

I’ll have to see how the booking plays out but Willow losing, followed by the turn, was a choice. And then having nepo baby meme wrestler Jack Perry pin Bryan fucking Danielson was a choice, and the Vegas crowd (who, to be fair, were on and off all night), fucking hated it.

I also Takeshita should’ve beaten Mox, and the crowd turned some thst way as well.

Ospreay-Strong was great, and the right decision. The post-match was a reminder that there was an angle 6 months ago that went cold due to injury and crowd apathy. We’ll see where MJF fits in now.

Toni-Deeb was good, and laid a good foundation for the eventual Toni-Mariah match.

I couldn’t give less of a fuck about the trios title at this point. There aren’t enough legit trios to make it sustainable, so bury it and make a women’s tag and give them more than one match a show.

OC-Trent I guess is going to a parking lot brawl. Also, general course of show is leaning towards a Don Callis family breakup (GOOD).

Swerve-Christian was a great match, the stomp on the announcers table was so good that it shone a light on the questionable impact of the actual Swerve stomp.

Cope-Black was gory and crazy, and had the predicted (but fun as hell) Gangrel appearance. Plus Slayer!

Overall, Anarchy lived up to the billing and the music parts were funny. Doing a fire stunt is always unpredictable but that one seemed to be well pulled off. Darby hanging there forever and the “please save Darby” chants were the background for a weird ending. All of the tacks didn’t do shit, but the shoe spot was fun (since I’m not a Reebok exec). I missed whatever the exploding spot was.

Anyway, I got my money’s worth but overall I have some doubts about the current direction.

This show could’ve not had the FTW match or Mox/Takeshita and it would’ve been better, but it was still really good. I’ll have more to say tomorrow, but I really think the wrong guy went over in the cage.

Holy shit what a show, I loved this show all the way through. Give me an all nighter full of matches like that any day.

Thought keeping the preshow to just 2 matches worked pretty well as both got time that wasn't far off from the main card matches. Deonna/Thunder was a fun early opener.

Ospreay/Strong was a good main card opener. Long but flew by.  Welcome back MJF and Juice. Fun return promo from MJF and the TAT reveal! Felt like MJF just killed off Cole and will just move on for now.

Toni vs Serena was excellent, loved it and thought they delivered big time in the ring, exactly what I would've hoped for from this one. Knew Serena didn't really have a chance but still great stuff.  Toni/Mina at FD should rule

FTW match was fun, dug the surprise inclusion of Bryan Keith and giving him something new. "Jericho hired a Bounty Hunter!"

Moxley/Takeshita was pretty killer. I was surprised that Moxley got the win, as I thought for sure being non-title/title eliminator on PPV would lead to Takeshita earning a shot.

No blood from Mox since the Barbed Wire Cage was up next and they let it flow. Popped big for the GANGREL appearance! Nice entrance from Brood Copeland bringing back the Slayer theme like WM 39.  I thought Copeland was going for a diving double stomp at first look coming off the cage, wild spot.

Knowing the triple main event was still to come at this point was crazy but I loved it. Mercedes vs. Willow was awesome and lived up to the hype. Loved that the crowd was still super hot by this point and pretty evenly split. Willow looked fantastic in one of her best showings here. Mone' didn't come off overtly heelish here and still had crowd support. Mercedes also with an all time Pounce bump there. Was hoping the Statlander turn wasn't happening since it didn't happen in the match, but I guess that can be interesting.

Swerve/Christian was great even with the obvious outcome, still had me wanting Christian to move away from sitting there waiting for the Swerve Stomp.  Though the jumping Swerve Stomp on the announce table was one of the best looking and brutal ones.

Main event was an absolute blast. Marked huge for getting The Final Countdown for them to brawl to. Bryan "Play the greatest entrance music of all time!" Taz: "War Machine?" classic. Then the crowd chanting "We want music" when it ended ruled.   Okada presenting the spiked sneakers to the Bucks "try these!".  Coach Tony randomly getting tossed onto the stage, Jack getting set on fire. So many epic moments throughout. I'm probably forgetting more stuff I liked a lot. Overall loved it.

Interesting that the Owen Cup will determine the world/womens title challengers for All In, should be some exciting stuff coming up with the build to Forbidden Door starting this week.

I kinda half-assedly paid attention to this as I wasn't really feeling it going in. TBH I feel kind of burnt out on wrestling in general lately.

Strong/Osperay was fine and although it was good to see MJF back and his promo was great, I think this was the wrong place and time on the card to do it.

Storm/Deeb was also fine

Didn't pay much attention to the six man other than noticing Juice is back

The FTW match was your standard sports entertainment garbage match. I'd hoped Jericho would at least get rid of this pointless title after winning it, but we need more gimmicks here I guess. Felt kinda bad for Brian Keith as his run in amounted to nothing. At least they're doing something with him though.

OC/Trent should have been on Collision or Rampage

Moxley/Takeshita didn't really belong on a ppv either. Takeshita looked like a million bucks here. One of several matches where the wrong person won. I don't know if it was NJPW/AEW politics or just lol Moxley wins, but Take should have gone over here.

I was expecting them to skimp on the barbed wire in the cage match and got pretty much that. Gangrel showing back up was nice but this was another case of the wrong person winning. Edge also looked like a goof jumping off the cage and essentially landing on his feet while making slight contact with his elbow on the table spot.

Willow/Sasha was decent with a few clunky exchanges. I feel bad for Willow having to lose to the debuting Big Star, but as over as she was I think she'll be ok in the end.

Swerve/Christian reminded me of Cody/Logan Paul from yesterday in that there was no doubt who was winning, but it was a fine world title match and program to fill a spot.

The main event was a comedy match.

I knew Statlander was turning when she came out wearing black. When has Stat ever worn black?

Almost every time she wrestles. But the contrast with Willow and Stokely was a big sign.

Crazy thing was the best stomp out of a very good (table) and a very bad (finish) one was a third one: early in the match when Christian went for a drop-down and instead of running over him, Swerve just stomped on his back. Beat that, jack! If Swerve came up with it instead of Christian (which is about 50/50), then kudos.

Damn, what a show. I thought it was really good top to bottom. That said they could have cut a couple matches and saved them for Dynamite. I do really hope the return of MJF is the kick in the ass dynamite has needed for a while.

But yea Osprey vs Roddy was good as was Toni vs Deeb and Willow vs Mone.

Anarchy in the arena was a glorious train wreck. Can't believe Jack Perry got lit on fire.

Same here - wondering if we get right into MJF vs Swerve or not. I'm gonna be super pissed off if MJF's just gonna killing time wrestling various combinations of TUK until Cole is healthy. Fuck a match, just treat tonight's segment as the blowoff -  MJF won, now move on and get him in the title mix.

Funny, half of us are thinking it was bad timing on bringing back MJF and half are hoping it’ll bring back Dynamite. Can we all agree that the tattoo, while a nice touch, was kinda shitty actual ink?
