Cobra Commander Posted November 5, 2024 Posted November 5, 2024 Not to cover topics that are not meant for this board but I am endlessly amused that my county election board uses Bic pens for voting in polling places 1

Mike Campbell Posted November 7, 2024 Posted November 7, 2024 Between me being sad about the Bears game on Sunday, being worried about my dad after not hearing from him all day and my attempt to call him getting a recording saying the subscriber wasn't available, and a rough day at work, it boiled over into a nice bout with anxiety on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning that resulted in me sleeping like shit. Luckily, right before I left for work yesterday, I finally got a text from him to at least put my mind a little bit at ease. I got through work, watched Dynamite and texted back and forth with my dad (including me running to the bathroom and missing a call where he left me a VM to tell me how great it was when the Death Riders beat down Orange Cassidy), and I slept like a rock last night. So, I'm up and ready to take on the world today. 3
driver Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 Today was my last Saturday delivering for the current job. All restaurant deliveries cease after next Saturday and all deliveries to retail stores are done Thanksgiving week. In the past month I placed five applications. I interviewed for two, one told me I wasn't classy enough to haul trash and two never replied back at all. It had been over a week since the last interview(at a job fair) when I got a call from that company asking if I was still interested. I told them I was. I filled out paperwork on Tuesday morning, had a physical/drug test on Wednesday and got a curious call from them on Friday asking me about when the doctor wanted me to do a sleep study(for sleep apnea). I told them that nothing had been said about taking the sleep study. They asked if I'd been given a medical card(basically you don't get a DOT medical card if you fail a physical), I said yes and they said they'd probably conflated my results with someone else's. They gave me an "Oops, my bad!" and said they'd get with the hiring manager to setup an orientation date. As soon as I get a start date I'm giving notice at the current place. A lack of communication at the current job has been a recurring theme. I've found out more info from my customers than I have from the management where I work. It is what it is. 6
COLETTI Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 FYI something I've recently learned that if you're 40+ and your BMI is over 30, they can refuse you a med card unless you have a sleep study. Just found this out fairly recently with a new hire at my place. Doesn't matter if you've never had a symptom of sleep apnea. 1

I mean it's a good starting point if you pay zero attention to your health, but that's about it. I'm 6'2", 238, almost in the best shape of my life, down from like 310, can run 10 miles, look good, smell good, can dance all night long. Still considered OBESE by BMI. 3 1

For the past 10-15 years I have been hearing that BMI doesn't really work with people who are more muscular than average. I'm 5'6" and a half, 190, considered significantly overweight (not sure about obese, that could also be possible too) by BMI at this point and still overweight in current profile pic. This of course wouldn't stop companies from restricting one's access to certain health benefits if they feel like it, so that's neither here nor there. But yeah, BMI doesn't tell you everything, but it can tell the companies (insurance or otherwise) what they want to hear, in order to screw you over. Edited November 12, 2024 by Shartnado grammar 5

I'm pretty much the exact size as you, and yes, it's considered obese. Luckily, it doesn't effect any work or insurance related things for me. I've had like three different doctors tell me that BMI is bullshit, too. So crappy that a totally bogus number can really screw people over. 3
driver Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 I'm 54 and my BMI is 25-ish. I'm 6' and weigh 190(had been as low as 173 a few years ago). Those numbers are to superior when when I was 42, weighed 360+ and my BMI was way over 30. I got my start date yesterday and promptly gave my notice when I got back to work. 6
zendragon Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 BMI measures 3 dimensional humans in only 2 dimensions. As mentioned it does not account for muscle mass and it breaks down for people who are abnormally tall or short. Now its a decent tool for studying group averages but like any tool it should not be considered the be all end all 4
Technico Support Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 I’m on a work call discussing a software package called “Anaconda” and I swear to God every time they say the name, I hear “MY ANACONDA DON’T WANT NONE UNLESS YOU GOT BUNS HON!” 1 8

There's also an early Sisters of Mercy song called Anaconda, so there is a chance that "Baby, buy an anaconda/ baby, buy a thing to wear!" could pop into my head in a similar situation, but most likely it would be Sir Mix-a-Lot! 1

Curt McGirt Posted November 14, 2024 Posted November 14, 2024 Okay, not only have I played Sisters of Mercy in my car today, I also got weighed and had my blood pressure taken yesterday! Thank god the weight machine was in a measurement that isn't basic pounds I can calculate; the blood pressure was "a little high"... and I'm already on two blood pressure meds. Wonderful. I also got a filling put in this morning; half my face could be sliced open and I wouldn't notice, which also means I can't eat anything until it goes away. *sigh* What a wonderful life we lead. Sir Mix-A-Lot was some of the first music I ever listened to with my best childhood friend, along with tapes he had from his brother of Salt N Pepa and -- get this -- 2 Life Crew's Banned in the USA. He also had the Trick or Treat soundtrack by Fastway and that probably did a whole lot to influence where I went after...

For an album that wasn't supposed to be sold to kids, there sure were a ton of us in my junior high that owned As Nasty As They Wanna Be. 2
Zimbra Posted November 14, 2024 Posted November 14, 2024 An important part of growing up in the early 90s was having a friend with bad parents who owned 2 Live Crew and Too $hort tapes. 2 2
Curt McGirt Posted November 14, 2024 Posted November 14, 2024 My friend's brother also had the Body Count self-titled and Dre's Chronic on tape.* I still remember my bud coming to me and saying "do you know what marijuana is? Here it is" while showing me the picture on the inside of The Chronic. I did not even know what it was until he showed me. It was a naughty thing you shouldn't talk about, until you were fourteen. * Though the prick was still a racist who apparently, I was told, took something called 'painkillers' to avoid being hurt while he and his friends had a brawl with the local black kids at the only Hardees in our town. The friend wound up being a cop. Go figure.

Cobra Commander Posted November 15, 2024 Posted November 15, 2024 not sure if it's just me or something with Chrome or Wikipedia but i've been getting slightly annoyed at how when I type something into the Wikipedia search bar and press the down key, it doesn't take me to the first result but takes me down the list a little.. it works right on Edge/Firefox and on the mobile version of Web Wikipedia.. it's sorta annoying for me though
