A lot of Michigan is still full of local chains like Neighborhood Cinema Group and Celebration Cinema. There's some Regal and AMC, though not particularly close to me.

I’d expect to see art house friendly theaters in East Lamsing and Ann Arbor, just for the student populations.

I'm not sure about East Lansing. There's a very nice, very old theater in AA that does a fair amount of art house type stuff, but I'm a bit over 2 hours north of there so it's not really an option. (Did see Red State there with a Kevin Smith Q&A years ago.)

It could also be true some of the more high profile art house stuff is shown on campus. Admittedly, it was 25 years ago, but I saw most of those kind of movies at the theater on the Bloomington campus. Things like Reservoir Dogs, Cook Thief and the like. I think there was also a place downtown to showed lower profile and low budget films.

Champaign is a college town too so that had a lot to do with it. I really scored in that a TON of classic horror got booked -- and some not so classic. Who can really say they saw Nekromantik in the theater? Or freakin' Psychos in Love? 😄

When I lived there, we always just sent to Toledo and never to the theaters in the mall. Of course, when we went to see The Crow, my friend Darren had his car stolen, leaving 4 of us stranded until one of other friends came to pick us all up.

There is a positive side out here: Gibson City, IL's Harvest Moon Drive-In has done twice their typical business this year! I mean if you are showing Jurassic Park yeah that's a big piece of bait on the hook, but it's also awesome. And of course... I've still not been there, and even passed on their Dawn of the Death/NOTLD double bill. *holds head in hands*

Paramount+ is increasing its prices

Quote

The Paramount+ Essential plan (with ads) is increasing by $2, meaning the price will be $7.99 per month for all new subscribers. The ad-free Paramount+ With Showtime plan, meanwhile, is increasing by $1, with the new price then being set at $12.99.

Additionally, subscribers to the Paramount+ Limited Commercial plan will see their bill increase by $1 to $7.99 per month.

The pricing will go into effect on August 20, 2024, for all new subscribers.

Existing Paramount+ With Showtime subscribers will see the price hike go into effect on their next billing date on or after September 20, 2024. The Paramount+ Essential price of $5.99 will remain unchanged at this time for all current monthly subscribers.

The annual subscription plan for both tiers — $119.99 per year for Paramount+ With Showtime and $59.99 per year for Paramount+ Essential — will also remain unchanged.

I saw Mel Gibson's The Patriot of all fucking movies at that drive-in.

We're lucky to have two drive-in theaters within a close drive of us. One is only a couple years old, and is nice enough, but not a lot of character. The other (Georgetown, IN) is incredible. Looks like it's barely been updated since it opened, in a good way. Has great food at really reasonable prices for a movie theater. We try to go at least once a year. It's so much fun and the people there are so friendly.

They shut down the mall theaters a few years back. Basically all the mall has is a flea market/swap meet and mini golf. Toledo has a drive in but they don't do anything fun, just new releases. Further south, near my parents house the drive in does retro marathons on one screen with new releases on the other.

Yes, it's siding with heartless multi-billion dollar companies, but on the other hand... fuck AI with a steel brush.

The most insane aspect of the Redbox bankruptcy is that Chicken Soup for the Soul Media bought Redbox.....in 2022.

Two years ago some business was like "Renting DVDs out of a Kroger Parking lot will never die." And were willing to take on that company's already 325 million in debt to prove it.

I love physical media. I don't love it that much.

That is the weirdest fucking company.  Even ignoring that they made their fortune from That Book Your Grandma Gave You For Christmas '96,  besides Redbox they also own a dog food company, the Crackle streaming service, the rights to the Laurel and Hardy and Our Gang films, and a couple of shuttered production companies.

The Hulu/Disney+/Max bundle rolled out today. $16.99 with ads, $29.99 without. ESPN+ is not included, so if you already had the Disney bundle without ads and had the Max add-on, it's the same exact price as you were paying before since ESPN+ is $10.99 (Disney Bundle without ads being $24.99, and the add-on through Hulu was still $15.99). My guess is that they're trying to split ESPN+ off into Venu Sports (preliminary listings for Venu include ESPN+), and this is their way of doing it.

Inside Out 2 has passed The Avengers and is now in the Top 10 for highest grossing movies all time

A side interesting note - IO2 has grossed $100 million in Mexico - the first movie to ever do that.

General price hikes at Disney/Hulu, effective October 17.

- The Live TV plans both go up by $6 ($83 a month for ads on on demand content, $96 a month without)
- Disney+ by itself to $10 with ads and $16 without
- Hulu by itself to $10 with ads and $19 without
- Disney+ and Hulu as a bundle with ads to $11, remaining $20 without.

I've seen conflicting reports on the Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle. I've seen some sites report a $2 increase to that bundle with and without ads, but Ars Technica reports no change and the Verge left it out.

I dropped my Live TV a couple of months ago and I don't miss it. I especially don't miss it after the second straight year of $6 price hikes.

It won't be long before this has an increase which I'm keeping an eye on since I have this bundle.  With the changes in bundles happening throughout the year I wonder how much longer I'll have this since I am off and on when it comes to Disney or ESPN viewing.  Maybe I'll pause on the bundles at times and if there's something to watch hope I can easily get back on it.
