2024 VIDEO GAMES CATCH ALL THREAD

Recommended Posts

What I am curious about is the subscription to Game Informer was one of the "perks" of paying for Gamestop's "Pro" Membership and honestly was probably were the majority of their current subscribers came from.

Ironically my Membership lapsed a couple of months ago because I legit can't remember they last time I physically went into a store

One would assume they aren't going to offer members any sort of refund or discount but I do wonder if any communication has been sent to folks who do have the membership

I forgot about the inflation too, none of that helps print and other businesses for obvious reasons. For print, speeds up the decline faster. Companies also do budget cuts and cutting departments makes whatever else they have left last longer.

I get most of my news and info online, I have mostly gone all digital with few exceptions.

Oh yeah, BioWare did a full on series of interviews about their new game a week or so ago that now don't exist (legally) online anymore.

Yeah, it's absolutely wild that not only is the magazine gone, but just straight up deleting the archive is awful.

Cat Quest III is out now, and if you already have the other two and pick the bundle with the big discount it's less than $15. So that's what I'll be doing today.

Some of the fallout from Suicide Squad bombing is the WB Discovery now wants to license some/all of its franchises to other studios to make games

Just some of the franchises are

  • Batman
  • Justice League
  • Harry Potter
  • Looney Tunes
  • Game of Thrones

I continued playing Metroid Prime for some reason. It has me hooked even if there are things about it that make me want to scream. Part of the reason I stuck with it was in pretty sick succession I found 3 new items and now, I think, I can go anywhere. I also have a better understanding of the map, but my god, the map controls are horrific. You remastered the game but didn’t bother improving the world map?! If I click on an elevator, take me to where that fucking elevator goes to, but instead, it just takes you back to the whole overworld map.

And I’ve stopped fighting most enemies. Now I just run. I’m so sick of fighting the same shit in the same rooms. I think I’m close to finishing it. I hope.

I’m also practically seething with anger knowing that the other 2 Metroid Prime games probably start with you losing all of your gear and having to get it all back. Again.

I bought both Doom and it's sequel about two weeks ago for $2 each, and now I get this crazy combo for free? With a much less insane trophy list? Well that's friggin neat!

Ugh.  Realized last night that I never downloaded Resident Evil HD Remaster for the Xbox 360.  And since the store is now gone and the 360 didn’t get a physical edition, there’s probably no way to buy it now. Anyone know of any legit sites that might still be selling a code for it?  Not interested in piracy.  I don’t mind digital games, but I really dislike not being given the option for a physical edition.

Funny part is I’d probably never play it on the 360.  I’ve probably bought RE six or eight times over the years.  I’d probably go back to it on GameCube.  Other than that, my preference would be Wii or PS3. PS3 version doesn’t have anything on any other version except the controller is most similar to the PS1 controller RE was originally designed for, but the PS3 got a sweet limited edition (Japan exclusive) that I really like.  If we’re just talking seventh gen consoles, I’d probably go with PS3 & Wii over X360.  Prefer playing with a standard controller scheme, but Wii motion controls were an interesting experiment that worked out really well for the game.  Might be the definitive edition of the game, depending how you feel about Wii & motion controls.

I don't think you can as I believe codes no longer work. There are grey market sites selling keys to the game but without the store I believe there is no way to put in the codes so I think there isn't a legitimate way to play it unfortunately. If I'm wrong and codes can still be put in (should be easy to test, I just don't have a 360 anymore), kinguin has codes for sale for the game if you are ok with grey market sites.

I played lot of various RE games on the PS1 and Gamecube in the past. The Gamecube games are more polished. I played RE2 on N64 in the very late 90's, the port has several exclusive features.

I still have my RE4 for Gamecube, I had the PS2 verison but I can't find it.

I have one of the RE5 games for the PS3 and the RE6 demo.

I regularly go back to the Resident Evil port for DS but on my 3DS. Another port with exclusive features.

The HD remaster should still be on 8th Gen stores, including Steam and GOG (don't know about Epic off the top of my head),  The OG just got a PC rerelease on GOG, with 2 and 3 coming.

Codes supposedly still work. I haven’t tried it, but I’ve seen a few YouTube videos of people using codes to download content. The “Redeem Codes” link can also be found in the settings menu & was still part of the menu as of last week, so it theoretically it should work. Mocrosoft’s FAQ says codes “may not” work, not that they definitely won’t work. Probably doesn’t matter, though.  I can’t find a code on a legit site & I most likely won’t check out the grey market key reselling sites.

Yeah, HD remaster is still available for PS4 & Xbox One + Switch.  I really don’t really need RE for X360. I’ve probably bought RE 1 12 or 15 times if you add up all the various digital, physical & limited editions I’ve bought over the years.  Just would like to have it for X360 & annoyed I somehow never bought the 360 version even though I had 20 years.  I was thinking I bought the physical edition for 360, but it was digitally only on the 360.  It’s not a big deal.  RE’s just a game I’d like to have on every platform. Back in the day, PS3 & Wii editions were more appealing.  PS3 had an import retail edition which included full English support + an import limited edition that looks really nice. Wii had a retail edition with motion controls added in.

Alright, last week I finished up all the weekly challenges on Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition with at least an A, and I only need to get one more pin (for finishing the gold challenge at least three times) and do the Legendary Run at some point. Here are my thoughts on the NES games in this package after having speed run them a bunch (and preparing to do more of it to improve my times and participate in the weekly world challenges for the foreseeable future):

Super Mario Bros. - Still one of the great all-time platformers, and it's nearly forty years old. Going from Pitfall or even Donkey Kong to this must have been akin to playing something like GTA III after having played through years of attempts at open-world 3D games (including Rockstar/DMA Design's own Body Harvest on N64). Like, what a leap for the genre.

Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA) - I remember how disappointed I was when I played this game as a kid. Learning that it was another game entirely with the Mario cast plonked into it made a lot of sense because at that point in time, 2D Mario games didn't stink, and this game stunk bad. It still does. At least it gave us Birdo, Mouser, Wart, and playable Peach and Toad! And I guess it gave us the trope that Luigi can jump farther, but is a bit harder to control, which really became fun in the 3D games (clearing Galaxy with Luigi is the most fun that that game ever gets). But otherwise, what a stinkfest.

Super Mario Bros. 2 (JPN)/The Lost Levels - The wind effects are a neat idea, but I think there was only one challenge in NWC that included them. Otherwise, it's a perfectly fine sequel that just doesn't hit the same as the first game did.

Super Mario Bros. 3 - Still the greatest 2D platformer of all time, don't @ me with mentions of Braid or Super Meat Boy or whatever inferior 2D platformer people pretend is better than this one.

The Legend of Zelda - Link turns like a station wagon that's got bricks for wheels. Good game, but doing speed runs of chunks of it is not the most fun experience.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link - Here's the first game on this list that is more fun as a series of segmented challenges than it is as a full game. I played some of it on my 3DS after playing through the challenges and playing without a guide is an irritating and pointless experience, as it was for many '80s action-adventure or RPG games. But in chunks? It's incredibly fun! The combat, a thing I hated so much as a kid who never got very far in the game, is genuinely engaging and varied. It's basically 2D Dark Souls, and maybe I'd like Souls-like games better in playable challenge chunks than I do as full adventures.

Metroid - This is also more fun in playable chunks, mostly because I don't want to make my own map. I don't think I liked a 2D Metroid, like liked it, I mean, until Fusion. From that point on, the series really got its hooks in me when it was in 2D. As a series of short timed challenges, though, you can definitely see why this gameplay was good enough to sustain the (very slow) growth and (relatively tiny) rabid fandom for this series. Also, Samus is just so cool, even as a little eight-bit figure. Samus with her helmet off is my current player image that I set for this game!

Donkey Kong - Where's the pie factory?! Stupid RAM limits on NES carts. Anyway, this is a legendary game that doesn't really hold up and that's not really worth playing anymore (unless you're drinking a beer at a barcade and just havin' fun) if you can get your hands on a copy of DK '94

Kid Icarus - There may not be a wider gulf for me between a Nintendo character that I like a ton and the quality of his games. Poor Pit. This game isn't very good at all, and neither is the Game Boy game, and frankly, I hated the 3DS game (the rail shooter stuff was fun, but the on-ground segments were just awful to play). Make a truly good Kid Icarus game, Nintendo! It's been almost forty years!

Excitebike - I don't think I've ever spent more time with Excitebike than I have until I played this game. You know what? Excitebike is fantastic. Why haven't I played more Excitebike? The Excitebike challenges in NWC made me put Excitebike 64 on my N64 collection list.

Ice Climber - Supertrash. Would rather play Pac-Man on Atari 2600 than this.

Balloon Fight - I refuse to tarnish the name of the late, great Satoru Iwata, may he rest in peace. Nintendo's been run by a bunch of bankers and financiers instead of a creative since his death, and while that hasn't harmed the quality of their output as of 2024, I still have much respect for Iwata and the fact that he loved video games as an art, and not just as a product to sell. I will say this for Balloon Fight: First, I liked it more than I ever have playing it in bite-sized challenges (though that's pretty much the game itself in full). Second, back in the days that Gameworks was a thing, they had a game called Sky Pirates. You'd get in a seat and play against three other people, moving the seat (and yourself) up and down on a vertical axis to try and pop the other players' balloons the most. That game was INCREDIBLY fun, and it was just a more interactive Balloon Fight. Therefore, I declare Balloon Fight to be an ultimately good game and Iwata's genius to know few bounds, even if the WiiU was a terrible mistake and I am not a huge fan of the 3DS either.

Kirby's Adventure - I can't think of a bad Kirby game. Even the ones that I like less have neat art design. I don't like playing this game in speedrun mode because, frankly, I don't enjoy trying to get de-powered Kirby going at a clip quick enough to get these challenges done at an S-rank time. It's a good game, but it's not a good speedrun game.

I enjoyed Super Mario 2 when it came out.  It definitely didn't feel like a Super Mario game but it worked.  I eventually beat it as part of Super Mario All-Stars.

Super Mario World is legions better than Super Mario 3.

Metroid is great but Super Metroid is a thousand times better.

The ice cream truck in my neighborhood uses the main theme for its song.

I'm gonna shake the driver's hand and tip $10 on a chocolate eclair one day.

I really loved Super Mario 2. Everything about it. The cover art, 4 different characters with different powers (Peach for the win), the music, picking up stuff and throwing it, the creepiness of the bird mouths that open and then one of those fucking things comes alive, the desert areas, and so on. As a kid I could never beat Wart. I would always come close though.

Honestly, I think of the music from SMB2 than the classic Mario theme.

BRING THAT MUSIC BACK
