Bartolo Colon is officially retiring

That's right folks... the 50 year old Colon had never retired despite not pitching in the bigs since 2018

The Mets will host an official retirement ceremony for him in late August when they are playing the Angels (the team with who Colon won his Cy Young with)

This makes it sound like they've put him in a sci-fi pod for years of hypersleep.

"the club lacks any sort of disability insurance of Strasburg’s megadeal"

That is mind-boggling.

The 4 letter article on the subject said that given his injury history, IF they could have found an insurer, it would have been mega expensive. . . .

Presumably less than $245m though 🙂

Here is the blurb from the Post article

Quote

Beyond 2023, Strasburg still has three seasons left on the seven-year, $245 million contract he signed in December 2019, right after he won World Series MVP. But the Nationals do not have any disability insurance on Strasburg’s contract, according to four people familiar with the situation. The premiums would have been extremely high, two people explained, and that’s assuming the team and a company could have agreed on a policy given Strasburg’s age and extensive injury history. And three people familiar with the situation doubt ownership would have spent on top of the $245 million, even if it provided some financial protection in a worst-case scenario.

The White Sox walk it off courtesy of a fastball thrown straight into the home plate ump’s facemask; he slumps over as if shot and the Tigers catcher understandably loses track of the ball, allowing the winning run to score.

Ump is okay; all three runs scored today via wild pitches/passed balls.

what level of health do you think Stephen Strasburg has to be to become a relief pitcher? obviously he would be way overpaid as a reliever but something is more than nothing value-wise

someone like John Smoltz was throwing 900-1100 pitches a year during his time as a closer post TJS. Chapman has been around 900 pitches a year most of his seasons.

Strasburg hasn't thrown 400 pitches in a season since 2019. So it'd a bit of a project to make this idea work.

Former SF manager Roger Craig died today at the age of 93.

This now leaves Sandy Koufax and Carl Erskine as the final members of the World Champion '55 Dodgers.

His other claim to fame is as the starting pitcher in the first game in Mets history.

Royce Lewis landed on his head after colliding with Gabriel Arias while running to first and I’m amazed he’s still able to walk. Very scary.

That play is a perfect example of why I said they should go with the slow pitch double first base to reduce injuries instead of increasing the base size.

Detroit fans know him as the pitching coach of the 84 champions.

Follow up to the Aaron Judge catch

He missed last night's game and is now due to have X-rays and a MRI when the Yanks get back to NY. There is talk that he might have broken a toe.

And combine that with Nestor Cortes going on the IL with a "shoulder issue" - this season continues to go swimmingly

As a kid - Roger Craig managing the Giants while Roger Craig played for the Niners always gave me a chuckle

they also both wore #33 at the time by pure* coincidence
