March 2023 Wrestling Discussion

Recommended Posts

I met my friend Ji-sama, who is my friend because we're both (Asian) Kuuga's friends, in Osaka for drinks (and also food) and she took me to possibly the MOST hole-in-the-wall prowrestling bar in Japan. The sign "advertising" the bar is one of the funnier things I have ever seen. CLEARLY it's the kind of place where the only people who go there are regulars. I would be ASTONISHED to learn that I was not the first gaijin to ever visit the place. But everyone was EXTREMELY welcoming. They all yelled out "Ji-sama!" when we came in, like she was Norm going up to the bar in Cheers. And every person in the bar was a major pro wrestling maniac. It's run by the somewhat unlikely "couple" of almost-my-age Bull Power Takuya (whom I first met at a Kuinshinbou Kamen Produced show in April of 2011) and 19 y.o. cute-as-a-button indie joshi wrestler Miyu. The walls are covered with indie wrestling posters, there is a rack of wrestling magazines and programs to leaf through, everyone brings snacks to share, and Takuya mixed my whiskey sodas hilariously STRONG. We had such a nice relaxing time hanging out there that I almost missed the last train home. What a privilege to be invited, and welcomed, into a self-contained little world like that! 2cv4tnO.jpg

(Ji-Sama, it's the sign on the right, of course it was DVDs of indie wrestling playing on the TV but also sometimes baseball for whatever reason, a SECRET BASE poster! The guy in the purple shirt helps set up the ring, Miyu and Bull,I also met Emi Sakura at that show in April 2011)!

I guess I'm not savvy with gambling and stuff because I thought DraftKings was basically that. Or maybe it's not technically considering gambling since it's free to play or some shit?

They're usually just prop bets (how many time will the Usos use a super kick, will this match end with a spear etc) no just finishes. Also, you don't have to put money down.

I can't see gambling being on finishes because stuff can change, imagine they have the main event for Summerslam locked in by April, but one of the wrestlers gets injured a week before the show so now everything is off. I can only see prop bets happening long term.

I think the JBL character (southerner made good and now essentially a rich, wannabe carpetbagger) is more aligned with what Vince actually thinks about himself than Million Dollar Man.

FWIW I always thought JBL's original look, especially in the face & hair, had an odd resemblance to Vince Jr. in his younger days, which is why I was always willing to accept the premise that JBL, even moreso than the Million Dollar Man, was a Vince avatar in the ring.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here who does this, but I often picture you all as your avatars.

well, now that this thread is covering the whole "gambling on fixed contests" topic I pretty much have to start posting in it then, don't I?

Some of the comments you see on women's wrestling or even women announcers (or let's be honest women in general) on Elon's little glitchy webpage are unbelievable.

So much disgusting shit . At the same time, it's frustrating to me that people give attention to the trolls. Why even comment on a garbage tweet from some loser with 2 followers?

I wonder the same thing every time people here melt down over some ridiculous tweet by Austin Aries or Flip Kendrick or whoever.  Either don’t follow the dude if he’s going to say something that annoys you or just ignore it and don’t give it minutes of your life.  Some people seem to enjoy being constantly offended (and want me to know it, lol).

I agree with your overall point, but Flip and Aries were doing more than being annoying. Sometimes people like that need to be called out.

Is Flip Kendrick being unfairly caught in the crossfire because his name is a cross-section of two stupid pro wrestling social media users in Flip Gordon and (the allegedly repentant) Brian Kendrick? Or is Flip Kendrick of all people actually bad?

For those wondering what it looks like:

Surprised they even have ROH markets up too.

Remember that one year Michael Cole won a WrestleMania match?

That's what legalized gmbling will give us.

Omos is a 4-1 outsider vs Brock? Let's have wrestler X cause the distraction, Omos hits the Sky High, gets the pin and we all collect. Brock can then hit him with 25 suplexes and F5 him through a table afterwards to get his heat back.

(immediate) edit:

fuck this board. can't tag users. can't embed images. can't navigate forward/backward pages. this is beyond ridiculous.  @DEAN  @Rippa
seriously. it's been fucking months. fix this board. i'm a member of multiple other message boards online and nobody else seems to have any of these issues.  what the fuck.

edit (from later):

that was harsh. i love this place.
Natural, i don't remember what made me think of this, but it popped into my head so i had to throw a quick picture together and share. Not nearly as funny as it was to me, but i hope you got a chuckle out of it.

What was WWF's plan with Sid when he came in in 1991? Was the heel turn and match with Hogan at WM8 always the plan or did they change tack once Warrior agreed to come back? The happy smiling babyface Sid Justice character really did not work although he seemed to be over.

This. The number of basic message board functions that don’t work here is silly.

I feel like the page navigation issues has been going for.. a year?  Two?  Maybe more?  I know there are workarounds, but I shouldn’t have to swing a dead chicken over my head and perform a voodoo ritual to go from page 2 to page 3.

I don’t even think about posting links or videos.  I seem to get the unspecified error message more often or not and I really don’t have five minutes to try multiple browsers then see if an editing trick will work.  Copying and embedding a link from Twitter should take 30 seconds.

Didn't Matt Cardona win the IC title at Mania once just to give the crew an additional chance of a Mania payday or am I making up my own narrative? At least I am pretty sure that a couple of days out Ryder had pretty long odds that changed within an hour or so a day or two before Mania.

Also fixing wrestling matches to optimize gambling income seems to be a step back of 150 years.

Or just have a DQ. I know with Bovada, you just bet on who wins, straight up. Doesn't have to be a pin. If you pick a guy to win and he wins by DQ or countout, you still win your bet. If it's a non-finish or something, it's just a push and you get your money back.

I think I've told this story before but I won like $150 on a $5 bet when Orton beat The Fiend at that one WM. The odds were so long on Orton that I was like, "fuck it, I'll throw down $5."

I always assumed the Undertaker's streak ending was just to fund a few little retirement nest eggs for some officials in the company

I've also read that Jericho's first Undisputed title win made a shit ton of money for some folks b/c some sports book in the UK was taking bets on that ppv. A few people who knew about Jericho winning beforehand cleaned up.

Yeah, sometimes the odds on some things are so long, it's worth it to throw down a couple of bucks because it could return a few hundred. It's not like real sports where betting on super long odds is silly. It's a pseudo sport run by an insane 75 year old dude who sleeps 30 minutes a day so you never know what decision he's going to make.

These regulated sportsbooks aren’t stupid. They don’t put themselves in a position to lose money on anything, much less WWE. I’m sure the max amounts on wagers will be extremely small and the juice/lines will be absurd. And as soon as they think you have an edge over them they’ll start limiting your bets like they do with any other sport.

Well, the rumor was Sid was gonna be positioned as their new Hulk Hogan but Sid didn't understand why he should be a babyface to begin with. Doesn't help that he tore his bicep some months later after he came in. Then you add in the whole steroids stuff that became a big issue.

IIRC Sid returned from the injury right before the Royal Rumble 1992 and that's when they had already switched to Hogan vs. Sid Justice at WM VIII with Sid being the monster heel. However, if you believe Sid, Hogan made a big stink about getting booed in Albany and Sid getting cheered. Make of that what you will.

They've been doing it since Rumble 2012. The threshold required for any one person making a profit these days before they get capped sits around $500 I think.
