AEW DYNAMITE!- 3/1/2023!

Got my jeans and black wrestling shirt loaded into my car so I can head straight to the cow palace after work. Dark matches start at 4:30 and I’m off at 3:30. We’ve had a ton of rain and people don’t know how to drive in it!

I don't think Revolution looks bad or anything, but I think I'm more excited for this show.

Same. It's just kinda *there.* I'm just really missing that overarching sense of anticipation with AEW lately. In the early days, it was the Hangman/Kenny story, then it kinda pivoted a little with all the summer signings (culminating with Punk, obviously). Things just feel a little... rudderless to me right now, for lack of a better term. I really, really hope this promotion didn't peak with Grand Slam I, but beyond the reality show and video game (which they really ought to rename 'AEW Wait Forever' at this point) I'm just finding it kinda difficult to get hyped right now.

This is NOT an AEW doom and gloom post btw - we have enough of those, and I am sure the promotion will be fine, financially, creatively, etc. - it's more of a 'me' post. Last week's show was surprisingly good, did a great number (we've talked about the cycle) but at the same time, it didn't necessarily have me rushing here like I used to at 10:05 to go 'Holy shit, can you BELIEVE...'

I mean, in a way, it's a good thing; they've set the bar extremely high! I guess it just takes a special kind of prick to complain about it...

Right now  we're getting a lot of good to amazing matches but some of the angles and charcacters aren't very compelling, and some of it also feels like reruns.

Massively. They need to sign her, she's the only difference making star apart from Punk. More generally, while I can still barely concieve of anyone preferring WWE to AEW, they have lost something in the last year, and that's surprise debuts. I know they can't make WWE release name talent like they did in 2021  but that's what it is, it's why their ratings are down and why even people in here who love AEW are generally less enthused.

Speaking for myself, even though Kenny vs Hangman was better booked than MJF vs Dragon, I care about them both equally, which is to say much less than the fresher stuff down card that hasn't had months of shows built around it. I guess I only really care about main events in wrestling when the challenger would be a first time champion, who has never held a major title before, and has a genuine shot at winning. Which I realise as I write it includes Hangman, but he had a long build and seemed inevitable when he won. Basically I think I want endless Brock vs Eddie Guerrero, which is easier said than done.

My problem with the PPV is that I don't give a shit about the main event. A 60 minute match where there's no fucking way MJF will lose. If this were longer into his title reign that I would be interested because there would be a decent chance he could drop the title. Instead it will just be 60 minutes of waiting for a finish we all know is coming. And this has nothing to do with not liking MJF. I like MJF a lot. I just think an Iron Man match at this point in his reign is pointless and feels more driven by Danielson to show off that he can keep doing these 60 minute matches.

Plus, it's a 60 minute match at the end of a PPV with a bunch of matches on it already. I will be shocked if I don't fall asleep during the main event especially because the next day is a work day.

Dynamite though, Dynamite I'm looking forward to!

I’m interested to see how MJF does in 60 minutes. I suspect his efforts will come as a surprise for some. I also sense this title run will see him drop and regain the title quickly at least once. All that said, I too assume that he’s going over. I’m here for the 60 minutes not the predetermined winner. An hour of Bryan Danielson with nearly anybody on this roster sounds like a fun prospect to me. And hardly a reason to complain. Wardy-Joe and the trios title match all have my interest with this ppv. Tonight looks fun too. I hate having to sit thru these career shortening, forgettable, senseless multi-man ladder (equals lame) matches on the ppv, but somehow welcome it on a weekly tv. Maybe it’s the excitement of the debuting Kommander? Also, isn’t it Riho and Toni tonight? And Avalon-Jericho, right on!

The complaints in this thread sound more like product burnout. Especially considering the incredible consistency of these weekly shows. There have been very few if any runs of television this excellent that I can remember in my many years watching pro wrestling. There will always be misses, but rarely does a company bat as high as AEW is right now. What was that said about ‘fickle fans’?

I 100% agree with you that the current run of AEW TV is off the absolute charts.  My main issue with the product is that AEW currently has a champion in MJF who I personally couldn't give a shit about and they took the legs out of Starks who could've been a far better challenger right now(and more believable to dethrone MJF so short into his reign) and it's Danielson, who is one of my all time favorites, but is also on record as not wanting/needing a title.

Personally, i really think the show would benefit from MJF not being Champ and Jericho taking a 1 year vacation, lol, but that's just me.  In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy the hell out of must see TV on Wednesdays(i work too early on Saturdays so i miss Rampage far too often).

This is where I'm at too. The only way the IM could be interesting is if Bryan wins, and that just doesn't seem to line up with the booking trends. I guess there's like a .5% chance TK shows some grapefruits and has Bryan win and MJF go on a quick downward spiral before coming back as the mega face he should be, but that seems to go against the nature of everyone involved. MJF just wants to be a cheap heat king, Bryan just wants to do exhibition wrestling, and Tony is happy to let the wrestlers run the show. The match will be fine, possibly great even, because both guys can go, but a match with no real stakes only has a ceiling so high.

That said, the rest of the Revolution card looks great.

Lol, I guess I’m a unicorn then.  I haven’t watched more than a few minutes of an AEW show in six months or so. I do read Metlzer’s recaps some.   I’m not really hooked on WWE but I watch the shows some and have caught the last couple ple’s.  I’ve enjoyed the ple’s.  Not sure I would think much of it if Raw and SDL were canceled tomorrow, though.

I actually don’t have a concrete reason for preferring one over the other.  Just watch one occasionally, skip the other one almost entirely,  Truthfully, I suspect if you’re really into wrestling, AEW is probably the better option.  Even if I did have a reason, I dunno that’s I’d feel obliged  to say more than a couple words about it.  Different strokes for different folks, duality of man, tastes great/less filling, etc.   Kinda condescending to say “welp, I can’t conceive of someone not liking this thing I like” so maybe be a little more open-minded next time?

things I remember from this edition of AEW Dynamite:

Orange Cassidy prevails over Grande Guillermo to open the night

The House of Black is facing the Elite at the PPV, if the lights going out didn't tell you that already

Powerhouse Hobbs wins a giant gold innertube and there's doubt over who faces Samoa Joe for some reason. Lots of spots here.

Chris Jericho squashes Peter Avalon, Ricky Starks runs out and looks behind him twice for some reason. Then the Jericho squad jumps Starks again.

The Lights go out again and Jungle Boy Jack Perry is being ominous towards Christian

Hook makes Matt Hardy tap suspiciously quickly

Riho is back again and Britt sure is the focus when her friend is the champ

Orange Cassidy and Danhausen are in the PPV Tag Title Match? Well. Okay.

It feels weird to have a final segment starting so close to the top of the hour. Fuck your Powerslap, AEW's going over by a minute tonight.

Aside from the main event, it feels like this PPV snuck up on the rest of the promotion.

These types of ladder matches mostly make me uncomfortable. Too common, too much risk, not enough reward in terms of standing out in a crowded marketplace. Andretti dropping Sammy that way was rough stuff. Feel for Hobbs who clearly needed a taller ladder to comfortably take down the doughnut, and was really taking his time taking that first step from the tippy top -- and who can blame him?

Being a Chuck and Trent fan has to really suck sometimes.

Felt like there were timing issues with the show, especially during the battle royal. If it comes out that something ran long, would be the least surprising thing ever. On the other hand, if things going long cut out a planned MJF promo... then I can think of a few people who'll be thrilled.

They really missed a big chance to turn the Wingmen fully face here coming down to save Pretty Peter and Starks from the JAS beatdown, also I'm happy how the Casino Battle Royale turned out but it wasn't very Casino-like was it? More of a Royal Rampage but down to one ring. If you're complaining about no FTR as a Joker team, that's just getting yourself upset at your own fantasy booking as no Joker team was ever hyped either on commentary or in the graphics leading up to today.

Onto the matches!

Big Bill/Orange was definitely my pick of the night, that might be the best Big Bill performance we've ever had? Is that safe to say? Hook/Hardy was also much better than I expected it to be
