RIP Jay Briscoe

Throughout all this I was also thinking of Dax because I felt this would really mess him up.  But while I'm sure it is here's this.

Oh, and if you have some time to spare it's worth checking out his podcast last week talking about this match.  He to say the least thinks the world of all of them but it was neat to hear the details about it all.

I'm absolutely devastated.  I had the pleasure of talking with him a few times and he was the nicest dude around.  They all were really great and I thought incredibly highly of Dem Boys and Papa Briscoe.  Still do and always will for that matter.

I posted this in 2020 when we were looking to discuss good times with people in wrestling but I'll do a quick summation of it here.  We were at an ROH show in Baltimore at the Du Burns Arena.  They had an after party at Della Rose's across the street and it was the one time my friends joined me for both.  They loved The Briscoes from the ROH show but we felt even if we didn't meet anybody we could still have some drinks and a good time.  Well to our delight out comes The Briscoes and Papa with them to boot.  They were gladly hanging with whoever wanted to and we were all happy as could be to have fun with them.  Looking for a round to share we all get a shot of Wild Turkey.  My wife drank that like a champ which caused Papa to hug her and say "I love ya, darlin'."  She was beyond delighted about that and would still talk about it sometimes.  Then as time went on Mark got to talking about his beloved Dodge and asked what I drive.  The fool I am I said the truth in saying a Honda Civic.  His eyes bugged out so big like I tried to steal a chicken from their farm but man did that make for one helluva photo.

But they were awesome and after that I spoke with Jay two other times.  One was at a McDonald's where I'm on my way out and see him with his family.  We do some pleasant small talk and I was on my merry way to the show.  Another was at the show when I'm in the back by the soccer boards.  I happen to peek behind me and see Jay from the behind the plexiglass taking in the show.  We again have some pleasant small talk then it was back to watching the show.  So add to that those experiences plus the times I heard them in interviews and I just thought Jay was such a nice fucking dude.

These experiences were fun but I know that it wasn't unique to say "Hey, I met/hung with for a bit/etc. Jay Briscoe and he was awesome!"  He has a lot of a friends and fans that can vouch for how awesome he was.  But man these times meant the world to us and it breaks my heart hearing that he passed.  We just sat there first in a state of shock then in various states of crying (especially when finding about those in critical condition)  Then I kind of sat there and admitted that I'm not going to be able to say much and was best off coming up to type.  But sometime on the weekend we'll get a tiny bottle of Wild Turkey and have a shot in his honor.  And I haven't even thought much tonight about his wrestling but y'all know he was fucking amazing with that too.  Luckily with working from home I'll definitely have some stuff playing throughout the day tomorrow.

Thank you for sharing this xxx.

I lived less than a mile away from the venue that ROH ran when they first started coming to Detroit. I was there when Mark did the SSP off the ring truck and I was there later that year when Mark under rotated on that SSP to the floor. I remember Jay changing out of his ring gear out on the front sidewalk while they were waiting for the ambulance. You could easily see the care and concern that he had for Mark. Hell, you could see how close they were their entire career.

I think my favorite Briscoes Detroit moment was when Jay told Davey Richards to "run along with yer no-belt-havin' ass." Once those two found themselves on the mic, it was absolute magic from then on.

There are no words that capture how tragic this is.

I'll miss you, Jay. Thank you for everything.

Genuinely shocked. Punk and Joe complication dvds were my eye opener to ROH but The Briscoes Vs Gen Next (don’t remember the event name) was one of the reasons that made me keep coming back. So sad, RIP man.

I'm honestly in shock. Jay and Mark Briscoe are proof as wrestlers that they could be themselves, not change for anyone, and have so many follow them everywhere. I really wanted to see FTR/Briscoes IV happen in WWE. I wanted to see them on AEW and beating the tar outta the Young Bucks. If anyone deserved a storybook end of their careers like that, it would be them.

What's crazy is so many guys I knew growing up acted like the Briscoes without even having watched them on TV. They captured something primal and Southern and rural that can't be duplicated or replicated.

RIP Jay Briscoe.

FFS, just a couple of days ago we were discussing how young The Briscoes still are and how long we've watched them so this came out of nowhere.

RIP Jay, I always thought he was one of the scariest and most intimidating looking mfers in wrestling all the way from 2007 to now.

What horrible news to start the day with. I don't have any stories of hanging out or shooting the breeze with Jay, but I had the pleasure of watching his entire career... and he had IT from day one. It's amazing to think he and Mark were tearing the house down with the SATs when he was literally 17, and not just doing spotfests... he had the fundamentals locked down and could pull off the "twin magic" spots with Mark like it was nothing. I can truthfully say I saw him live in front of 100 people (JAPW) at the start of his career in Bayonne, and across the river at the Garden before 19,000. He scaled the heights and did it all... including this.

RIP.

What a terrible way to start the day.  I am absolutely heartbroken.  I will have to grab the fifth of JD Honey Bourbon I have in my pantry and pour one out for my homie after the telework day is done.

RIP Jay.

Not saying that it could happen, or even necessarily that it should, but if Mark were to show up as a Rumble entrant, I'd probably cry.

It's way too soon to think about (and I'd bet there's a non-zero chance Mark never works again) but if they didn't 'want' The Briscoes when Jay was still with us, fuck 'em now, I say. Then again, there's the reality of funeral costs and caring for injured kids and mental health and so forth, so I'm not going to tell the guy to kick a 5-6 figure check out of bed, but still, something would seem grimey about that to me.

Um.. did Mark suddenly get released from RoH?

EDIT: As much shit as I'll give Tony, taking care of his talent and their families when bad shit happens is something he does really well.  More feeling bad about a family that lost a father and has injured kids out of this, less bad wrestling tie in takes.

I am not sure if it is was that the WWE didn't want them it is just that the money and spot in NXT wasn't something that would make them leave their profitable chicken farm and the freedom that came with ROH and the indies

I will assume that AEW does a tribute tonight for Jay even though the Briscoes were for some reason never allowed to be on TV.  It is way too early to be expecting Mark to appear at wrestling shows.   At least give him a couple weeks to deal with this before he decides to continue with his career.

From 2015-19 I went to the ROH Anniversary shows in Las Vegas as Sam’s Town Casino well the first one was at the Orleans but they moved to Sam’s Town from there. Back to my story it’s 2016, the show just got over and there’s 1,000 ROH fans on the Casino floor. There’s a TGI Fridays at the Casino with seating that is essentially on the casino floor but is separated by a railing. Well they seated Jay and his wife at a table right on the railing so everyone who walks by sees Jay and his wife having dinner after the show. I saw a good amount of people as they walked by fist bumped Jay or get a picture with him and every time he’d engage with a fan then go back to dinner and it didn’t seem to bother him being interrupted from dinner with his wife. As I walked by I fist bumped Jay and he was in the main event so I commented on the match said thanks or something I can’t it was very brief but Jay was a gentleman. I think what I’m trying to say is I was impressed on how he handled the situation he took it in stride. He could’ve moved seats but he said fuck it sat there and interacted with the fans as he tired to have dinner with his wife.

I always thought it was so heart-warming that this crazy-ass looking hillbilly in the most carniest of professions had put together this adorable little family and seemed to have made a nice life for himself. Now, there's some little kids that don't have a dad anymore. I just hope those little girls make it out physically ok. I don't give two shits about wrestling stuff when it comes to Mark or whatever right now. I just hope he can find some kind of peace after some time.

I just remembered a non-tournament match Jay had vs Inferno Kid at the 2002 Jersey J-Cup (dat lineup tho). Inferno was supposed to be the face, but the crowd booed him mercilessly no matter what he did. Jay picked up on this, and started to cycle through every cheap heat Memphis trick he could think of trying (and failing) to turn everyone back. At one point he had (I think) an abdominal stretch on Inferno, looked around and grabbed the tights while gleefully mean-mugging to rapturous cheers from the fans. One of the funniest fucking performances I'd seen in wrestling to that point, and all down to the instincts and timing of an 18-year-old kid with the mechanics of someone twice his age... which sadly would've been him now.

Was there ever a story about how the Briscoes became the Briscoes?  Obviously that wasn't their real names.   Since I believe they got there true start in ECWA the only thing I can gather is that Jim Kaetner was a big Jerry and Jack fan.    Or maybe they came with the names themselves
