2023 HORROR THREAD

RIPPA

Well, shit.   It does not look like the 804 was a part of the limited release locations for The Outwaters, at least not for the weekend of 9 February.

Hopefully it will come to the theaters here later on.  I'm not subscribing to ScreamBox just for one exclusive.

From looking at Joe Bob's FB page, seems many people did not like the choice of Nekromantik as part of last week's show.

Never seen it but reading the summary make for uneasy reading.

You know what would make a good double bill for Joe Bob? Deadbeat At Dawn and Truth Or Dare. I know the first one is ostensibly an action picture but I think there can be a little leeway there.

EDIT: Okay, I can't resist. NSFW for language.

Nekromantik is one of those movies that you watch just so you can say you've watched it and not have to lie about it.  I don't mind watching horror films specifically designed to trigger an audience, but Nekromantik definitely pushes far past the envelope of good taste.  It rivals Cannibal Holocaust.

Joe has delved into the dank recesses of the exploitation vault before, but I don't think he's ever shown a film as dark as Nekromantik and I was there for the Ilsa the She Wolf double feature tribute to Dyanne Thorne after she passed away in 2020.

This reminds me of another time at the Art, when they played the '68 Night of the Living Dead. This is a college town so we had students showing up for the late night stuff and you'd get mixed reactions -- Dead Alive was a roaring success, The Exorcist was hated. NOTLD was laughed at at first and then you could hear the crowd go silent. One sorority member moaned to her boyfriend "that was actually scaaaaary" after the credits started rolling and that might've been the best reaction I heard at a movie besides the guy at Jackass 2 who said "don't puke on me, man!" to his friend who was, indeed, puking on him.

Watched the viral sensation Skinamarink last night.

About 15-20 minutes in my wife exclaimed, "Did David Lynch write this?", to which I had no reply but a chuckle.

There were a few moments early on that had a very nostalgic feel for me, but the length of the production dissipated that feeling as it wore on. (and on...)

I see where some people are losing their minds over this film, but since I lost my mind long ago it did not have the same affect on me.

Overall, I appreciate the creativity and intent behind the production, but I most likely won't add this to my physical collection.

After the last of the credits rolled I told my wife that I enjoy being baffled by David Lynch and look forward to Inland Empire on Blu-Ray coming from Criterion next month.

I give Skinamarink (2022) a rating of 5 Jim Van Bebber out of  7 E. Elias Merhige.

I posted my feelings about Skinamarink a few pages back.  I found it to be somewhat unsettling, but I wasn't traumatized to the point that some people are saying on social media.   It Is a film rife with interpretations that are equally blended by the movie's masterful use of liminal space.  Are the events in the movie literal, allegorical, or perhaps both?  It is up to each individual audience member to decide.

The I Am Legend sequel (the one starring Will Smith and Michael B Jordan) will take place several decades after the original and is using the original movie's alternate ending as canon (since, ya know, they needed Will Smith to be alive)

They also plan on leaning further into the Richard Matheson novel

And here I thought the joys of rush had been lost to time.

I watched that for the first time last year, and was really confused because the alternate ending (USA) was the actual ending (Europe). So all of the discourse saying the alternate ending was better was confusing the hell out of me.

Knock at the Cabin is good M. Night. The 7 lead performances are all fantastic, from Big Dave on down. I love that M. Night trusted Batista with so much of the emotional heavy lifting. Without getting spoilery, its super tense and heavy, there were some dusty eyes in the theatre last night. It does get a little heavy-handed, one character even has a monologue toward the end where they explain the symbolism of some things, but that's just the kind of thing you should expect in an M. Night movie...he did cast himself as writing Jesus in one of his movies after all. His cameo in this one is pretty funny.

Be warned, about 30% of the film is shot in ultra close-up. If you see it in the theatre, a 50 foot Batista head will be looming over you for a good chunk of the run time. Its very effective, though, especially during the event that occurs after the first choice.

I'm curious enough to want to read the book the movie was based on. There's a lot of talk about existing in online echo chambers and I want to know if that is original to the movie or something already in the source.

For recent M. Night output, I'd put it in line with something like Split, but way better than Glass. Haven't seen Old, but did listen to the Too Scary; Didn't Watch podcast about it and Knock sounds much, much better.

It was already pretty apparent before, but this pretty much seals Batista as the best actor-wrestler. He makes the most interesting choices and is clearly putting in the work, rather than just relying on personality like the Rock.

Conversation between me and my son yesterday that I figured y'all would appreciate (we were going to visit some colleges)

Me (handing him some cash): "Here, in case of emergency"

Him: "What? You mean like the Purge starting?"

Me: "If the Purge starts, we are screwed"

Him: "Abso-fucking-lutely"

For an A-lister, Rock has done a surprisingly good poor job of picking material.  I assume he can afford to surround himself with the best media consultants.  Maybe he needs to listen to them more?

i don’t rate Big Dave highly as an actor, but all I’ve really seen him in is GotG.

I think the Rock has just completely bought into the "Franchise Viagra" thing and thinks that it almost doesn't matter what the script is, his presence will elevate it. Sometimes it works, like Jumanji absolutely should not have been as good as it was, but was the right combination of people. But even in Jumanji, he struggles when he has to sell anything emotional.

Dave isn't going to win an Oscar anytime soon, but he absolutely can convince me that there is a real human being in there. He's a 300 pound giant that towers over everyone else, I buy his character. With the Rock, I never forget that I am watching the Rock.

I hope it's good. If only because it was partly shot in my hometown of Tabernacle, NJ. Which gives us another thing to be famous for besides being where "Mexican Lindbergh" Emilio Carranza crashed and died on his way from NYC to Mexico City.
