NCAAF GOIN' BOWLING! - 2022-23

Some thoughts on what each team has to gain/lose in the playoff this year.

TCU: The ultimate "nothing to lose" situation. Nobody thought they'd be here, nobody thinks they can win. As long as they keep the score out of "holy fuck they got killed" territory, they don't lose a bit of respect. If they win one, it's the biggest win in modern history for their program. They win it all, and it's the most shocking national title since BYU, except TCU will actually deserve it.

Georgie: Replace Alabama as *the* preeminent program in college football with a win. A close loss to either B1G team leaves that debate to next year. Become the first playoff champ to repeat and that legacy never dies. A loss would be a bitter disappointment, but the program would be in great shape (though titles are hard to win and going to get even harder soon. Who is to say they'll ever have this good a chance again?)

Ohio if they don't play Michigan: winning it all changes everything. They're back on top of the world, everybody starts deleting "fire Ryan Day" tweets from November, etc. Lose a close game to Georgia and they can establish that they are still in that top class of teams. A blowout, especially one where they get pushed around, and the words "soft" and "finesse" go from loud to deafening.

Michigan if they don't play Ohio: Losing to TCU would be a disaster. Getting smacked around by Georgia again would leave a clear and obvious gap between where they are and where they want to be. A close loss to Georgia and the hype for next year goes crazy, and there's disappointment but no shame. Beat Georgia and become legends, Michigan reestablishes itself as the team in Midwest, Buckeyes be damned. Harbaugh could leave for the NFL with almost no hard feelings, or he could work on replacing his hero and mentor as the most celebrated coach in school history.

Michigan and Ohio if they play each other: Ohio wins, and it virtually erases the last two years and Michigan's progress. The Buckeyes will have reestablished themselves as the Big Ten's final boss, Ryan Day is a hero, Michigan is back looking for answers. Michigan wins, and it hammers in that they have taken the top spot, they are the team in Big Ten and there's nothing Ohio can do about it. Either one, and it's the greatest bragging rights of all-time. But, if Michigan wins, there's a valid nitpick to be had: Can they actually beat the top teams from the south east, or did they get extraordinarily lucky that the Buckeyes snuck in, had the horses to beat Georgia, but Michigan just happens to have been built specifically to attack Ohio State and Ryan Day's biggest weaknesses? Nobody in Michigan will care, because national champs and defeated Buckeyes, but it'll be a fair question.

Kansas State had a chance in this game but allowing Bama to score a TD on a 90 some yard drive in under 2 minutes kills that

Meanwhile Iowa has 21 points in a half.  Did all the transfers start this game because 21 a game is a miracle for them

Two defensive TDs, naturally!

We have entered 2010 Citrus Bowl territory.

As soon as Young and Anderson announced they were playing, this is what I expected. Not because of how great the two of them are (and they are both in the discussion for best player in the nation) but because it told me that Alabama was in "fuck you, we're going to prove we should've gotten the playoff spot" mode. And while I like Kansas State and what they do a lot, a motivated Bama was always going to be too much for them.

For whatever reason, a whole lot of money has been coming in for Ohio tonight. Reportedly mostly from big money pro gamblers.

Enough that the spread has moved from -6.5 where it had stood basically all month to -5.5 or even -5 depending on the book.

I don't know if this means literally anything at all, but it's a big shift this late.
