The early writer tweets involves pushing the 5th best player on the ballot (McGriff) maybe because he was the 90s guy who treated the baseball writers the best.

I would probably put McGriff as 8th among those guys. McGriff getting in wouldn't be the worst thing ever. Him getting in because he's not Barry Bonds would not be good.

For the love of God, Albert Belle deserves to be in. The man had 100 extra base hits in a strike-shortened season.

And, once again, Lou Whitaker and Bobby Grich don't even get considered.

Since the Contemporary Era is for those "whose primary contribution to the game came in 1980 or later."

Grich played the entire 70s and only half the 80s - so he is probably considered for the "Classic Baseball Era"

Keith Hernandez not being considered infuriates me greatly just for his significance alone. People today don’t understand just how bad the post Midnight Massacre Mets were and just what a decrepit franchise they were: Think Oakland A's only with even smaller crowds playing in New York City. You can pinpoint the exact moment the Mets began the turnaround to when they acquired him in 1983 and 3 short years later becoming World Champions. He is the only player who leads his specific position in Gold Gloves who is not in.

That's because John Olerud was better and nobody wants Olerud in the Hall.

Fair point I suppose but Grich played 70% of the 80s not 50%.

Side topic... I remember an umpire back in JV being *quite* upset at me when I did this one (1) time in the middle of a meaningless blowout:

Makes sense given how often the inverse happens and a clear Ball 4 gets called a strike purely because the hitter takes off to first “too soon”

clearly this umpire knew better than to bring shame upon his entire household & ancestry by being the idiot who disagreed with Buster Posey’s read of the strike zone where everyone could see it.

That .360 batting average season is probably going to be the Blue Jays record until the sun explodes.

Same with his .354 for the Mets a few years later.

Reminder the deadline for the offseason to start is 5 pm tomorrow (Thursday)

Tomorrow will probably be mostly filled with QO offer stories

The probably two biggest options left (unless I missed decisions already) are Justin Turner and Carlos Carrasco

Okay - this one is a little wonky

The Braves Jake Odorizzi apparently exercised his $12.5 million dollar option

Atlanta didn't want him around so they then traded him to the Rangers

Quote

The Rangers have acquired right-hander Jake Odorizzi and cash considerations from the Braves, according to announcements from both teams. In exchange, Atlanta will receive left-hander Kolby Allard.

The cash considerations is that the Braves are paying $10 million

Continuing the trend of the Astros not announcing anything - similar to the Will Smith and Trey Mancini news - via the MLBPA FA report of new free agents

Justin Verlander is on the list meaning he triggered his opt out

SNY is reporting that Jacob deGrom is "interested in signing with" (a/k/a in tampering negotiations with) Texas.

I cannot wait for the absolutely banana number that's going to come out of this.
