MLB OFFSEASON (P&C Report 2/14/23)

I take no responsibility for what happens if you don't read this on your fainting couch.

But it seems that John Angelos has NOT opened the books of the Orioles, nor has he made himself available for questions, nor has he shown his face to anyone since last week's.... unpleasantness.

MLB decided "close enough" on their Cy Young plaques this year and gave them out despite "valuable" being misspelled on both.

Sinclair’s Sports Channels Prepare Bankruptcy, Putting Team Payments at Risk

I probably should know this, but I wonder if this affects the Cubs. Marquee, the Cubs network, is a Sinclair property.

If so, LOLOLOLOL. Fuck you Tom. Fuck your whole, dumb as fuck family. Fucking frauds and carnies.

Odd way to announce that Jazz is the newest member of Undisputed Era, but okay.

Putting Jazz on the cover is pretty surprising,  and it's not going to help the fact that it's been rumored that his teammates do not like him.

It's a weird choice. Missed 100 games last year. Career .243 hitter.  Flashy player, possibly rising star, blah blah blah, he's pretty unaccomplished to be on a game cover.

I'll answer that two ways:

1) Peyton Hillis was far more accomplished than Jazz is, coming off an 1100yd season.

2) EA could see a decade into the future and knew that Hillis would be a hero.

In fairness I think the Hillis thing was a fan vote where Cleveland fans went berserk

This is exactly what happened and I believe the last time they put the Madden cover up for a vote

Long time Dodgers scout Ralph Avila passed away at the age of 92

Avila was father to Al (former GM) and grandfather to Alex (current catcher)

Ralph's big "get" as a scout was signing Pedro Martinez as an amateur out of the Dominican Republic

Basically what I mentioned earlier - the TV rights are so borked that the Lerners basically aren't gonna sell until they are figured out.

Quote

It’s frustrating. So what has to change for ownership to change? You know the answer. Say it all together now: MASN.

The shadow that has shrouded the Nationals since they came into existence is at worst preventing and at least delaying their sale. We have written this before, but it’s worth restating now: The model for successfully running a baseball team includes making significant revenue from selling your local media and broadcast rights. But when Major League Baseball moved the Montreal Expos to Washington in 2004, it compensated the Baltimore Orioles — whose geographic territory the Nats were infringing upon — by granting the Orioles control of those rights. Not for a year or a decade, but in perpetuity.

The Nationals believe the Orioles have withheld the rightful share of their revenue dating back more than a decade. That affects the Lerners’ intake and, the Lerners have argued in court, limited the Nationals’ ability to spend on players.

This is all rehashing, but it’s in hopes of moving forward. To that end: On March 14, a New York court will take up the Orioles’ appeal of a decision that granted the Nationals about $100 million in revenue for the 2012 to 2016 seasons. (Thanks to colleagues Ben Strauss and Chelsea Janes for reporting on this.) If the court upholds the verdict in favor of the Nationals, there could be a pathway forward for determining what the Nats are owed from 2017 to 2021. Which, then, might be helpful in determining what a new owner (or partner) might expect in revenue for future seasons.

Yeah, the regional sports network landscape is changing by the minute. But we can dream, right?

That MASN still exists — and is still a story — nearly two decades after it was created boggles the mind. Talking about it is tiring. But it’s important.

The most likely buyer of the Nationals — if there’s a buyer at all — is Ted Leonsis, CEO of Monumental Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Capitals, the Mystics and the Wizards. Importantly, Leonsis now owns NBC Sports Washington, effectively a MASN rival. He has an interest in the Nationals as a team and as programming inventory. There’s no moving forward without at least some certainty on what MASN could bring in — preferably with a solution in which the Orioles and Nationals find a way (read: $$$$) to grant the Nats their media rights.

Dex is so beloved in Chicago that even jumping from the Cubs straight to the fucking Cardinals after winning the WS didn't harsh folks' buzz on him. Good man.

It helped that he absolutely sucked in St. Louis and felt like we sent the Cardinals a sleeper agent to bring them down.

Well to be fair Bunny's career got sidetracked pretty quickly with his carrot addiction and penchant for cross dressing. Then there were all those instances of him stalking and tormenting that poor hunter who was just minding his own business.

But in all seriousness, 77 years later that shit is STILL funny. You show that to a 7 year old today and they'll laugh.

There’s something off about those carrots. We have no proof he cheated, but we better keep him out of the Hall of Fame anyway. The integrity of the game needs protecting.

Right? I mean the pitching is one thing, but who manages to play all 8 defensive positions at the same time AND score 95 runs despite being the only hitter on the team? Clearly those carrots weren't what they seemed.
