MLB OFFSEASON (P&C Report 2/14/23)

Hey! Remember Carlos Correa?

Newest reports are that Scott Boras is now talking to at least one other team besides the Mets (the team potentially is the Twins)

The Mets want to add language to the deal that protects them from a long term Correa injury

Quote

Multiple reports in recent weeks have suggested the Mets are looking to add language that’d allow them to get out of part of the contract if Correa suffers a serious right leg injury. Puma first reported a week ago such a concept was under discussion. Ken Rosenthal reiterated that on The Athletic’s podcast on Tuesday, suggesting the deal would require some kind of modification to protect the Mets in case of injury.

Heyman echoes those reports, writing the Mets are insistent on including some kind of injury provision. According to Heyman, the club doesn’t want to make any major changes to the base 12-year, $315MM structure. They do, however, apparently want to build in a manner of lowering that guarantee and/or allowing them to get out of the contract early in the event Correa spends a certain amount of time on the injured list with a right leg problem specifically. How long such an IL stint would have to be and how many years or dollars could be voided in the case of an injury would have to be agreed upon by both sides, and it seems those issues are holding up the contract’s finalization.

as expected, Trevor Bauer has been officially released by the Dodgers to spend his 2023 (a) in Japan, (b) in South Korea, (c) in Mexico, (d) in St. Louis, (e) working in the WWE as Vince McMahon's Corporate Champ

Oh I could think of several teams who will be willing to sign him - especially since they only have to pay him the veteran minimum

Apparently there is a vesting option that will add 4 more years onto the deal

Meanwhile - the Mets become the 2nd team to be saved from themselves

If someone who is as unafraid to take a risk as Steve Cohen backs out on a deal due to it being too risky that's probably a good sign not to give a guy a huge money deal with term. That's like Mick Foley refusing to do a spot because it's too dangerous.

Here is the crazy thing

If Correa's deal with the Giants had stuck - his AAV was ~27 million

If Correa's deal with the Mets had stuck - his AAV was ~26 million

Deal with the Twins - his AAV is ~$33 million

Boston announces that Trevor Story had surgery on his right UCL (basically Tommy John) and possibly will miss the season. (Recovery is at least 4-6 months)

Basically right before Xmas as he was ramping up for the season, Story felt pain in his elbow while throwing

Well once Correa's Twins deal falls through maybe Boston can sign him

It appears that the Marlins have traded Miguel Rojas to the Dodgers

They in fact did trade Rojas to the Dodgers for infield prospect Jacob Amaya

Rojas also needs to have a "procedure" done on his wrist but is expected to be ready by Spring Training
